    Strength:

Solid build/quality; 7X110W amplifier from 20Hz-20kHz; very quiet internal fan; OSD; low THD (0.05%)

    Weakness:

No dynamic range control (DRC) except in Dobly Digital/DTS. Manual; however, as I have read it repeatedly for many hours and also use the OSD, this is minor.

First, just a brief note of thanks to those whom have taken the time to write about their experiences with their equipment. Very informative. Four months ago I bought the Pioneer VSX-D710S receiver and promply traded it back for the Pioneer VSX-D810S as it could play 5 channel "stereo". As I really started to get interested in audio equipment, I did a lot more research and decided after a couple of months that perhaps the Denon would be a better all around AV receiver. Luckily, I was able to sell the Pioneer and buy the AVR-3802. My first impression was that this was one remarkably well-engineered product. I carefully removed the covers of both machines and therein lies the rub. This is why, I thought to myself, the Denon is 3x more expensive. Everything within this AV receiver looks solid and just oozes quality. I noticed (and so did my wife!)an immediate sound difference with my Paradigm speakers. As mentioned in numerous other reviews, it seemed to "mellow them out" and make listening much more enjoyable. This is what is meant by the Denon being "warm". For listening to music, I often use the Direct mode 2-channel stereo, thus bypassing the treble/bass circuitry. I cannot particularly comment on the useability of the remote as I employ a RCA universal remote. The best piece of equipment in my home theatre. Strength:

    Sound, sound, sound. And flexibility.

    Weakness:

    Manual

If you are looking to spend $1000 on a receiver, buy this one! It''s the best. Music sounds full and natural, and punchy. I have had the last 3 Yamahas in this price range, and loved them, but this is in an entirely different class. Movies come to life with this baby. It has 7 channels of amplification, but don''t let that scare you; it will be a major improvement over whatever else you have with only 5 speakers. Dolby Pro-Logic II is great with music and TV, 5 channel stereo kicks butt.

    Strength:

    stereo 2-channel, surround, build quality

    Weakness:

gets pretty hot and needs good ventilation.

i researched for months before i bought the 3802. my requirements were that it did 2 channel stereo as well as 5.1 - flawlessly. it needed to be an all around performer. i had narrowed it down to the marantz 7200 and the denon. i chose denon because the build quality was excellent and the 2 channel sound was better. i''m using paradigm mini-monitors as fronts and a paradigm center. my surrounds are stand-ins until i get some more paradigms. being bright speakers i think they''re a great compliment to the denon who''s highs are a little ''rounded''. the manual is totally adequate and the remote gets a bad rap. it''s fine - i''ve ''taught'' it to do all my remote functions except for TiVo - which, it can do - it''s just that the TiVo remote cannot be beat, so i use it in tandem. the dsp modes are interesting, PLII is excellent and the 5.1 stereo mode is awesome for anything electronic or ambient. rock sounds a little weird in this mode.

    Strength:

    Strength:

prologic II; 5 and 7 channel stereo; DTS, AC3

    Weakness:

2 channel music could be a touch more realistic

I have had the DENON AVR3802 for about a month along with a pair of Klipsch RF-5''''''''s. I think the 3802 is an excellent value for the money. I will not comment on the remote, because I think the remote and the set-up proceedure is ok - I bought the unit for the sound quality. I primarily listen to music (Jazz, Chamber music; in direct mode)in 2-channels. The sound is really great, a touch warm, it perhaps lacks slightly in the realistic reproduction of cymbals and drums, as noted by one reviewer. Yet, I think the sound is very natural, some may interpret the sound as flat; although there is no lacking in bass; horns and vocals are also extreamly realistic. In general I feel the quality of the 2-channel stereo is highly reflected in the quality of the music CD. The system is as quite as can be; any hiss present during the listening experience is apparently a by product on digital remastering of analog recordings. I am glad I bought the unit. I wish the quality of the 2-channel music could be a touch better. I know that probably anything better than the AVR3802 for 2-channel music will reqire the purchase of separate components.

    Strength:

Strenght, Power and lots of new audio systems (DTS neo, Matrix e.t.c.) Dolby Prologic II is excellent!

    Weakness:

    I don''t find any.

I bought the 3802 after about 1 month of looking around to find a good AV amplifier to build my Home Cinema. Talking with friends, salesmen and reading many many articles and reviews, i decided to buy DENON AVR 3802. I have to say that AudioReview helped me a lot for my final decision. Now in technical terms, DENON has the power that i always wanted for my personal cinema! (Ask my parents for details!!!!)The speakers i use are KEF model 104 (front) and ROGERS GS3 (back surround). I have to say that the clearance and the true sound are things that 3802 gives to the listener. True cinema experience with plentifull of low frequency "expolosions". I read about the confusing setup, but i don''t find any difficulty with this stuff. Remote is quite good (I "tought" it to manage my TV, CD player and of cource DVD). Tuner also is good but who cares about it. If you want a good AVR, DENON 3802 is the equipment you need.

    Strength:

Decent surround reciever. Easy to setup

    Weakness:

Cheesy sounding amp sectiom. Unacceptable for music reproduction

I wanted a reciever to play both music and theater, well. The Denon 3802 only does one. My equiptment is approaching antique status, is power hungry and my room is larger than most. My fronts and surrounds are 20 feet apart. The 3802 played theater ok. The Neo:6 mode made 2-channel stereo interesting. The DSP mode sounded a bit too metallic. In PL II I was using all my watts but overall, not a bad unit. As far as old fashioned stereo, and using the surround modes for music, the Denon is severely lacking. Better than the $3-500 systems that I sampled, but it still falls far from the mark. It lacks definition, the highs and lows are muffled, even distorted. I listened to this unit for two weeks and I was getting used to it, but there was still something wrong. I did a side by side compare of the 3802 with my old marantz 2 channel receiver. As the opening to “hotel california” on vinyl, played I realized that the denon may be today’s modern marvel, but not for my music. The comparison sounded like the speakers were wrapped in pillows. The sound of fingers swishing down the neck of an acoustic guitar is non-existant on the denon unit. The low end clarity of a fender bass sounded like a muddy mess. i tried tonal adjustments, different surround modes. The worst was plain old 2-channel. I ran the denon’s pre-amp into the marantz’s power amp and there was a great inprovement, but still not as good as my moldy oldie. Nutshell? If you aren’t fussy this unit may work well for you

    Strength:

My Denon AVR-3802 was purchased at www.acousticsounddesign.com at a very good price ($789). First impressions of this receiver are very positive. The sound is awesome and it has much more power than I will ever need for volume, but is handy for accurate reproduction of the dynamics of the music. The music is exceedingly clean, approaching a Crown system that I use for my very serious and critical audio listening. Unfortunately, I ordered the receiver just after Christmas when the dealer''s and distributors'' stocks were depleted. This made for a two-month wait, but the outstanding quality of the receiver mad the wait, without a doubt, worth it.

    Weakness:

My only criticism is the complexity of the setup with the complicated remote and confusing manual. With several trials and errors, I was able to get it set up and running.

This receiver is every bit as good as my high expectations required. Sound is flawless, even though setup was difficult.
