Strength:

excellent sound quality, more than enough available plug-ins, plenty or power, awsome surrous sound,

Weakness:

none!!!!!!

I was satisfied with my older Denon up until a friend of mine introduced me to DVD and surround sound. I purchased an AVR3300 from the internet which turned out to be defective. I belive Denon is top quality. I am confident merchandise sold from non authorized dealers is not the first rate equipment. DO NOT BUY FROM ANYONE BUT AUTHORIZED DEALERS! The equipment will not be under warrantee! Thank god for VISA's protection plan! The AVR4800 has every feature you could need. I use my Denon, with POlk 2000i front speakers, POle FX500i rears, Polk 1000i center, POle PSW 450 sub, Denon 370 CD player and a Toshiba 3107 DVD player.....awsome!

Strength:

Very clean and powerfull, good dynamics, never harsh, good build quality

Weakness:

80htz crossover limit on subout, not really a problem though,I just wish they added abit more here

I am very pleased with this reciver. It made Stereophile`s recomennded products(April-01), and this is a audio only magizine. It outpreforms my old sony,it does`nt even compare. With the Sony,my NHT Super ones only sounded good at 1 particular volume level. It did sound good though. With the Denon it sounds great at all volume levels-Its all about real power.I dont want to bash Sony too much, they really have some great products. Sony ES probobly has the power.I choose Denon, because they are known for real clean dynamic power, more bass depth, all because of the real power. My Sony would be good with real efficiant speakers. My NHTs are not efficiant, and need real power.I just ordered Magneplaner 1.6s,I am confident that the 4800 will drive these with class,It has the clean power.Later I plan on a Bryston 3b or 4b amp,if I need it.The direct mode and the THX just had me in shock.I cant get over the quality of sound in the direct mode,if seperates are better I am in for a real treat. The THX mode just filled the whole room with beautiful sound.I`ve been doing a lot of research and there are alot of good recivers out there, but for $1500 or even $2000,I dont think your going to get all the features and quality as you can with this fine unit.On a closing note I noticed that the Denon AVR-5800 clipped out sooner than the 4800,according to Sound and Vision`s lab tests.?????? Thank you Denon for your great products.

Strength:

Incredible clarity, 5 channel stereo is worth the price alone

Weakness:

None I have discovered yet

INCREDIBLE! AMAZING! MARVELOUS SOUND! as you can tell I like this receiver a lot. I started looking and narrowed the choice down to Marantz SR 18, YAM RXV1, or this one. I found great prices on all over the net. SR 18 can be had for $1580 & Yamaha RXV1 for $1995, or this one for around $1300 almost any day if you look and are patient. I discounted the Yammy b/c it is essentially a DSP A1 w/ extra features and the money I felt went into fancy toys that I would not use. I WANTED VERY MUCH TO LIKE THE MARANTS BEST @ $1580!!! However I did A/B comparisons w/ the Denon and thought the Marantz was a little flat sounding while the 4800 was much more dynamiic in all frequency ranges. The bass had more punch and the highs were as good as the SR18 w/ just a little more shimmer to them. The guys at the audio store say they are divided 60/40 b/w the two w/ the majority liking the SR b/c it is "more natural sounding to the audiophile ear" whatever that means.I felt I should buy the SR b/c the price was a steal at the time for under $1600. HOwever the 5 channel stereo sold me on the denon. I had benn using banana plug to pull the rears from my Outlaw 750 amp & run into the fronts of my old Kenwood to get a similar sound in the past but the 4800 does it for me and much cleaner. I really started out to get a Pre/Pro since I have the OUtlaw 5 channel amp but the price of the Denon 8000 was too high and really the 4800 has all the processing of the 8000(nearly as clean) but for under $1300 you get the Pre/Pro AND 148 watts per channel AND EX!!!!!! I took the reciever. The SR rear channels sounded almost nonexistant to me & where some may say the rears are just meant to compliment the fronts I have 5 full size Wharfedale MFM 7 speakers and want them all to sing. The denon does just that. I use the Outlaw amp to push the 5 Wharfedales and the denon to push infinity RS 10s also hooked up to the front. I then used them both to Bi Amp the MFM center speaker w/ the outlaw pushing the bass & the Denon the mid/tweeter. It matches up great! I set it all up in a few hours and the insructions are simple to follow. I used the Radioshack SP meter to get it all evened out and then used it to check the Sp b/w the RS 10 fronts from the 4800 & the MFM 7 fronts from the 750 and they were w/in 1 dB! IT was meant to be.I highly suggest this receiver to anyone looking at new amp. I even recommend it to those thinking of going seperates like I was myself. The Outlaw Amp is essentially an ATI 1505 for under a grand and will work great w/ the denon. It does not mate well w/ the Denon 3300 thoughb/c the gains are too different. I topped this system off w/ MIT T2 speaker cables to the center speaker and the 4 fronts and they made more of a difference than the new receiver did actually in day to day usage. Get great speakers first then great speaker cables then go but this 4800 you will not regret it and AYS has a 30 day return policy. I liked the sound much better than the SR 18 but you should A/B them for yourself./ At these prices it is time to upgrade!!!!!

Strength:

EX capability, plenty of power for the average house, features that will give me an excuse to upgrade. Weight

Weakness:

The manual lacks detail, the remote seems outdated, LED volume is too small, good thing my vision is 20/15. Weight

It's a great piece of equipment. It's teamed up with M & K 750's and has no problem filling my house with great sound and effects. The room is 21 x 15 and this set up handles it with ease. Don't let the negative nimrods (other reviewers) sway your decision. Especially the one who compares the Denon to separates, he's complimenting this unit and doesn't even know it!! If you like the sound and you have the money, you can't go wrong here

Strength:

Inputs...loads of inputs. build quality(SOB weighs a TON!) sounds fantastic. great price! THX EX...upgradeability easy on screen setup

Weakness:

remote is kinda funky...glo keys are ok...would be better if backlit.

I don't know how those crazy kids at Denon did it, but this unit is loaded to the gills...and for around 1600 bucks. It boggles the mind. I previously owned a Denon AVR-3600 and really loved it, so when i wanted to upgrade to a newer unit I immediatly looked at the new 4800. It was love at first site. This sucker is built like a tank, its got more inputs than you can shake a stick at. The audio and video on this unit are superb, much better I thought than the more expensive Yamaha unit i demoed. If you are in the market for a high end reciever and don't care about a bunch of crazy useless DSP modes. The Denon is probably your best bet...hard to beat it for the money. Other people have complained that the full EX capabilities arent built into the unit (i.e. the required external amp for surround EX) this doesnt bother me, I believe this is done to keep the price down. This is great for people like me who probably wont have a need for THX ex right away...but can upgrade to it later if i so please. I think this was a good well thought out decision by denon and i appreciate them thinking about a budget minded consumer.

Strength:

Great sound clarity. Plenty of power. Tons of features and even more inputs!

Weakness:

Need an add on Amp to Use THX EX. Means more $$$. (But I prefer separates anyway).

Just got this baby hot off the truck. Sounds incredible. Good power and built well. Bought an add on 2-Channel Amp to power the fronts and reassigned the receiver to push the EX backs. Ex is really cool-true 360 degree sound panning. DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound amazing as well. This is the receiver I have been waiting for and I am not yet disappointed.

Strength:

Very flexible, features, power, build quality(nearly 50lbs same 5700, just "State of the Art"

Weakness:

Remote is kind of awkward to hold. Receiver is kind of difficult to calibrate.

This receiver just have everything, particularly when it come to features. It has a great feature call 5 channel and 7 channel stereo, which is just awesome!! This unit was made for multi-channel music. Listening to some of my favorite jazz CD's, this unit just made me appreciate them even more. For music the 4800 performs at audiophile quality. I'm more of a home theater person, but this receiver has made me renew my love for music. This unit sounds good in stereo, but when you click on the Direct mode, it takes the audio quality a step further.
The 4800 also have 5.1 and 7.1 channel external inputs for future multi-channel formats, DVD-A or SACD, I can't wait to hook upon one of SACD players to my unit.
As for hometheater, it sounds good in prologic, the best that I've heard from a receiver in awhile. In Dolby Digital and DTS its good, but doesn't really stand above some of the receivers out on the market. In other words, I think the Sony DA777ES sound better in the Dolby Digital and DTS modes, particularly at lower volumes, but when you turn both up loud the Sony would distort sooner than the Denon.
