I don't own this unit yet. I'm posting because I am having
a hard time deciding between the 4800 and the 3802, the new model that replaces 3800. Clearly, the 3802 is a lower-end model, but it does have some new features like DTS discrete.

On the other hand, the 3802 sells for 745 and the cheapest
4800 I can find is 1198. Plus the 4800 requires an external
amp, another 500-600. So the question is, is the extra 1000
dollars (price difference plus cost for amp) really worth the THX (as far as I understand, that's the main feature) or
is there also a big difference in the sound quality?

Any help greatly appreciated!

-Di

Strength:

powerfully, smooth midrange, THX, 6.1, build quanity, clean sounding, direct mode is very quiet

Weakness:

highs might not be as extended as some other amp.

After doing various researches and listening, I finally decided to get this receiver. I purchased this from ubid (b stock) and it works wonderfully since. Right off the box, it sounded very clean. The bass was powerful and deep, and the sound stage was pretty good. When compared to 3801, the 4800 appears to be more dynamic and sound clearer (mid range). The only thing I come up with as a potential weakness is the highs. Depend on your taste, the highs appear to be a little roll-off at the very top. If I don’t have any AMP (old soundcraftmen) to compare with, I would not notice it. Also, when compared to my old HK, the denon just blew it away in every aspect. Overall, I am very satisfy with this receivable and I believe I will not be upgrading in a long time.

For $969, i got to give this 5 star for value.

I recently built a new home w/ a custom designed dedicated AV room and hard wired speakers throughout the entire home.
I "tested" the Pioneer, Onkyo, Marantz, and Yamaha systems before choosing the Denon 4800 receiver and POA520 Amp (to drive the remote speakers). I was previously suffering with a late model Onkyo Pro-logic receiver and thus when I finally got my system up and running I was truely blown away.
This is a great receiver which produces phenomenal sound and amazing power. DVD's and CD's are crisp, clean and dynamic in all frequency ranges. The remote is difficult to use but this has been adequately described in other reviews.
With all of the amazing features I am not sure you will find a better receiver for the money.

This reciever is the best bang for the buck for a complete home theater...the setup took a while, but well worth the effort, all i can say is awesome...I really liked the denon 5800 but I can't justify the difference of price with the 4800...if you can still get your hands on this baby well get it while you can and save your $$$$ of the 5800...

This is my first hometheater receiver. I had everything customed installed for home theater and this receiver sounds great. I watched the Matrix and the Fifth Element and it sounded great, even my wife who was not enthusiastic in the beginning is starting love the sounds she hears on movies. I have had for three weeks so I am still learning and experimenting with the receiver. Here's what is currently in home theater:

DVD: Panasonic
Receiver: Denon AVR 4800

Center Speaker: Sound Dynamics RTS-C2
Subwoofer: Sound Dynamics RTS-1200
Speaker L&R Back: Niles HD-800s Left and Right Back

Strength:

Crystal clear 125 watts x 5
Intelligent auto switching features (DTS, THX EX, 5.1, DD)
Clean, well ordered front
Logical, well thought out on screen menus
Component pass through
More connections than you could possibly use

Weakness:

Runs hot when pushed
Remote could be a little more useful

Wow...
I could say that one word and be done, but I won't. Amazingly clear 125 watts x 5 (what would you do with more?)
Unbelievable number of well placed connections, plenty of power, clean front panel, an all around great receiver.

HT magazine suggested that this is the all in one box key to hometheater nirvana, and I believe them.

My system consists of:
Denon AVR-4800
Definitive Technology BP-2006TL (soon to be the 2004TL's)
Definitive Technology LCR-2002
Definitive Technology BP2X
Pioneer 343 DVD Player
JVC 32D501 Analog TV (the high def TV is coming)

Power and clarity of sound

Just purchased this amp. Had the option of going for the 3801 but stuck with the 4800. Just wondering wether the decision I made was a correct one, given that the 3801 has all amplication on board and doesn't require an external amp. It also has DTS discrete which the 4800 does not. Would like to hear from people in the know why the 4800 is far better than the 3801 (given the price difference). I mean, am I forgoing all the latest gadgetry (eg Neo 6, dts discrete.. etc of the 3801) for an overall superior, more powerful beast? I am interested to hear the thoughts of more knowledgable home theatre enthusiatst and audiophiles.
I will not compromise on sound quality (first priority) and therefore need reasssurance that the decision I have made is correct.

In need of reassurance.....

Strength:

Very Powerful,Transparent Detailed Sound, very accurate surround steering

Weakness:

No Individual Speaker equalization

I've had the opportunity to test all three receivers, Onkyo, Yamaha and the Denon.
They all have excellent specifications, a little bit more things here and there but the Denon AVR-4800 has a distinguished clarity in it's sound that was immediatelly revealed when I first turned it on.
Besides theater reproduction, I do listen to classical music quite a lot and I've been discovering details I've never EVER heard before on my Onkyo or the Yamaha.
The only thing that I missed here that I had with the Yamaha is that I'm not able to adjust Highs, Mids and Lows on each individual speaker. But this is not really a necessary item, unless you have different speakers or brands.
All in all....this Denon AVT-4800 is simply TERRIFIC !

One last note: Watch your Back !...this baby is HEAVY !
