Strength:

Movie sound

Weakness:

Remote control feature. I wish they would switch to the remote unit that comes with the 5800.

I took a chance and got this "B" Class unit from ubid.com. after learning that Crazyeddie is not an authorized dealer of Denon (Almost order one from them for $1,251) The product was shipped "DOA". No sound and can't bring up setup menu (On TV Screen). Luckily, I live in Los Angeles and Denon West Coast Headquarter just 40 minutes away from my house. Took it in to repair loose curcuit boards. Once I hooked it up, I fell in love with this unit. Sound was much better than my old Denon 1600. Music sound shows more details. Sade never sound this good on my 1600. I'm glad I didn't spend $2,700 for the 5800.

Denon has great service dept. TO Sonny and Ben, Thanks!!

Strength:

denon name, thx ultra, soundstaging and clarity, straight forward system with future proof compatibility.

Weakness:

none....4802 mass-market to help promote dts-es, a format with nothing to back. need an external amp. if that is a weakness.

bye-bye to yamaha! i knew i should have stuck with denon after the 3300, just had to try it out. then i got the 3801. and now, the 4800, a bargain deal for probably one of the best all in ones ever. after demoing the 4802 at my local hi-fi dealer, i just couldn't justify the creation of it. o.k., i won't be that hard on it. just isn't the same. think about it. an overly priced remote that functions like crap, kinda like big bro 5800. and the sound, just not the same. must be the differnt transformer that has to work for two more heat generators. but if you can't get the 4800, and believe me, it was hard to get this one, just get the 4802. it has those couple of extra features the 3801 has except the "plII". wow! as far as dts "discreet", my 3801 has it and i herdly ever use it. this thing is pretty basic and if you think about it, it has all the essentials you need. even future proof. what's all this neo stuff too? my 3801 has that and i never use it. it's in my bedroom anyway and i just use it for two channel now. mostly marketing ploys to help in sales. well people, i guess there really isn't any choice, if you're gonna pay $2000+ for a receiver, might as well get the 4802. just stay away from yammi-ha-ha-ha. you could also replace that remote for a pronto and sell it on one of the on-line auctions. to sum it all up, denon still rules, too bad a beautiful 4800 had to be replaced to keep up with mass-market format ploys and not pay attention to the effects on sound and other qualities. i even wondered why the 4802 was actually cheaper than the 4800 if you minus the remote. that's including two more amps and more features. packing too much crap in a receiver that other components also have like 192khz/24bit for dvd audio, plII, neo/matrix whatever the discreet it is, and an overpriced toy with a pretty blue screen doesn't do it for me. try to find a 4800. at the price it's going for, just can't go wrong.

Weakness:

At price, none.

The constructions differs little from a Sony receiver? What brand of crack rock is that guy smoking? I have never seen a $200.00 Sony receiver with a massive torodial power transformer or with the same DSP chips as are used with Mark Levinson digital processors. I mean yes the layout is not to the same level as the 5800, which has the transformer smack in the middle of the chasis flanked by heat sinks. But overall it truly is a giant killer. Even Stereophile gave it props both subjectively and in the lab. If any Sony receiver can produce 392W into 1 ohms (Stereophile, Vol.23 No12) than let me know if not , at least back up your stupidity.

well, its been a real looonnnnggg time since looking at this sight and i couldn't resist the temptation to say how lame of a guy marc is by trying to bash denon. what a fool. he says he wants to contact a manager for a defective product. then he says denon has poor customer service just before stating that denon offered his money back or a new product. well, customer satisfaction can't sound too much more satisfying than that marc. maybe if you had some good speakers for the powerhouse of a system the 4800 is, then it wouldn't have fried them. as for the 4800, you never owned it. your buddy does and you just can't take it.

fantastic unit! I have used it about 6 weeks now and I'm blown away!! I decided to purchase the Denon POA-5200 Amp to effectively use the THX processing, and again, Blown away!! my speakers have never sounded so great!! I am still using my mach-III (realistic) speakers which I have owned for almost 9 years now. In the future, I will invest in some more serious speakers, but for now, these sound excellent! I am impressed with the overall clarity and ease of use from this unit, and I am equally impressed with the seperate amp. unit. I have heard sounds on my music CD's that didn't seem to exist before, and the movies have a new life! THX is a wonderful sound experience, and I have listened to many high-end units and high end speakers, and sure they might sound fantastic, but dollar for dollar, I would venture to say that you can't beat these units for the money.....hands down. I can hardly wait to see what sounds I will experience when I upgrade the speaker system!!! Overall, you can't go wrong with these units, compare and you will agree!

I have had this receiver for a couple of days but I am already very impressed. Was thinking of separates but this receiver challenges separates at half the price. Sound is clear and bass is deep. Substantially better on music than the Yamaha, which is still a good piece and great for movies. I do not use the EX feature due to lack of space and funds. Will update this in a month or so. Strength:

soundstage, audio clarity, input flexability, THX Ultra rating, support for 2 additional rear channels.

Weakness:

Lack of DSP options, weak tone controls, over priced, especially since it doesn't contain an amp for the EX channels.

Nice, but unimpressive considering the maker, model and price. Lots of inputs. Remote is so-so, sound quality is good (great soundstage, but lack of tonal warmth), volume is decent. Opened the lid and was surprised to find the same construction, componants and wiring quality you'd see in a $299 Sony reciever- good, but not great. You're paying a big premium for the Denon name. If you don't need all the inputs, choose the comperable Yamaha instead.

I just had my house burn down and have lost most everything- thank God for insurance. I know this is a review page, but I just needed some help before I plunk my money down. The Sony Str DA777ES that I previously owned was an awesome reciever and they dont make it any longer. So this Denon has sounded good when I was at the store and has gotten many favorable reviews.
While I loved my Sony- very clean, rich HISS FREE power and sound, it had one flaw that I could not get out. In watching movies the sound would "fluctuate" louds were LOUD and clear- but softs were TOO SOFT. I was constantly "knob dicking" the remote to "even" out the sound. Got a little old.
How is the Denon for that? Is the sound during movies "consistant"?
Also I abhor hiss- Are these hiss free or Pink noise free when playing low and moderate volumes of music or movies? For this money I want CLEAN power. Sony 777ES was perfect at this.
i will be buying the 4802 seems like a better deal- but maybe not made as well? I like the look of the bottom buttons hidden.
i will post a 5 and a 5 not to skew the ratings and will take this review out after a couple of weeks.
Can anyone help me with these two questions?
Thank you in advance for emailing me your answers and experiences.
Also what country are these made in? Sony ES was Japan no Malaysion/Singapore/Chinese crap.
