Strength:
This receiver can do everything
Weakness:
pricey for a receiver, but less than seperates For those of us who either can't afford seperates, or whose wives won't let us afford seperates, this is the way to go! This receiver takes a little time to figure out, but once you do you'll realize that there isn't anything it can't do. Outside of going with seperates this receiver is definetly the way to go. From doing some research, and looking at websites like this one I knew I had to have Denon! I got mine on Ebay, brand new for $1400 dollars, and I'm extremely happy, I've had this receiver cranking for 5, 6 hours in a row at very high volumes and it just doesn't quit! It is truly a workhorse, there are some great prices on the internet for this piece, just don't make the mistake of going to Tweeter and paying full price. My system consists of: Panasonic 51 in. rear projection tv, denon avr4800 rec., onkyo integra dsp-5 dvd, definitive tech bp10b for fronts, def tech c1000b for center, def tech bp2x for rear, and def techs pf15tl+ for the ass kicking sub! For me this is the best home theater setup I have experienced!!! Similar Products Used: denon avr2800 |

Strength:
Power, detail and richness in sound. Features. Future proof. THX (ex) ultra certification. Dual surround speakers setup. Great bang for the buck!
Weakness:
Needs an outboard power amp to do "surround-ex". However, the POA-5200 is worth the extra $$$ since it really shines with this unit. This unit, coupled with the Denon POA-5200 external power amplifier, can be the hart and soul of ANY high quality home theater setup. I have been using this product for a week now and I'm still amazed every time I power it on, at the quality and richness of the sound it produces. I owned a AVR-3300 before this product and I thought it was the greatest thing to come since sliced bread. Was I ever surprised when I heard the 4800. The sound is so much more "alive" and detailed... No distortion at any volume setting. All qualities I was looking for. This units does everything the 3300 did plus it adds an extra 20 watts, THX Ultra certification and... about 25 pounds (+ the external amp) :) This monster is really big.. and heavy! I use this unit for: 30% home theater (DVDs in DD/DTS/THX), 50% watching regular TV broadcasts (5CH stereo) and 20% for music CDs (direct mode). My system consists of: Similar Products Used: Previously owned a AVR-3300 and a AVR-2700. |

Strength:
Clean power, connections, THX, tons of assignable digital inputs, sound.
Weakness:
Pricey Well I thought I would be the proud owner of a 3300, but my time with two of those units was brief to say the least(bad protection circuit and heat problems-read reviews) After I was convinced both the 3300s I tried were defective and it wasn't my AC or other components, I went back and got full credit towards and purchased the AVR-4800. I wasn't down on Denon products, I just knew they must be having manufacturing quality issues or bad components on the 3300 assembly line. The 4800 is noticeably better built with much more solid binding posts. It was a breeze to set up only because of all my trials with the 3300. It will take some time if it's your first. I run mine in 5.1 I'm not quite ready to drop more $ for THX speaks and another amp. You need an external amp for the back surrounds in 7.1 There are tons of connections and digital inputs. The remote may be ugly but I think it works fine. Sound is excellent on CDs, DVDs and the like. Very clean and dynamic. But most important of all, the 4800 doesn't even break a sweat. The 3300, when it would overheat and shut down was scalding to the touch. The 4800 barely gets warm and has a huge fan in the back which hasn't even turned on yet. I love Denon and there products and was mighty disappointed when I got 2 bad 3300s in a row(many other people apparently have also) but I am really impressed with the performance and features of the 4800. I just don't understand how Denon could let so many bad 3300s come off the line. I'm guessing the 4800 is built somewhere other than where the 3300 is built. Strength:
Excellent sound reproduction both for home theater and music, great flexibility, elegant and well-designed
Weakness:
The manual is not as well-designed as it should be especially considering the product it attempts to describe ! The Denon AVR-4800 receiver is quite simply, fantastic. The sound quality is very crisp both for music and home theater. It is very well-designed and offers an amazing array of features for its price range. My choice was between the Denon, the Marantz SR-19 and the Yamaha RX-V 2095. I finally decided to go with the Denon based on reviews on this and other sites and the greater number of features it offered for the same price, such as THX surround EX processing, larger number of optical and coaxial inputs, among other things. |

Strength:
power, build quality,5 channel stereo mode for music
Weakness:
Need power amp for THX I've had this receiver for 4 months now, and I'm convinced you cannot get a better product unless you go with seperates. For those of us that cannot afford seperates, this receiver is the way to go! The 5 channel DSP mode is terrific with music cd's. I also love the many other DSP modes, but with music the 5 channel is a must! I drive this receiver pretty hard, and it never even seems to break a sweat. After reading many reviews about Denon, and knowing the way I like to use equipment, I knew I needed a receiver that was very durable! Well I must say, that I am not at all disappointed! Strength:
Power, clean sound, future-ready, feature-packed, great for music and theater.
Weakness:
Lame, cheaply made remote. I love this receiver. Its build quality, its sound, its features are all outstanding. It's just very solid. Similar Products Used: Tried Yahama and Pioneer models that cost a thousand more. This beat them for pure audio quality. |

Strength:
Power, lots of power, will push 4ohm loads no problem!
Weakness:
Manual I started this hobby with a Yamaha 793 went to 795 to 992 to 995 to denon 3300 to now a Denon 4800. With each upgrade there was a huge improvement. The Denon 4800 is not for the faint ears, it can go loud. My favorit is THX 5.1, I have been re-watching all our movies again, amazing difference.( you can check out my DVD collection at www.dvdtracker.com/~bruceabar.asp ) If you are in the market for an a/v, check it out. Anyone can also e-mail for a Canadian shipper for PSB speakers or Energy, shipped anywhere, with the exchange rate(usa)you will enjoy a min. of 40% discount. If you live in Canada, I can pass along the same for Denon, Marantz, Yamaha products, there is duty to the USA if it is not Canadian made, so the speakers are duty free, and gst free for you americans! Strength:
Shear power, excellent sound, rox with the flix on.
Weakness:
Makes wife mad when too loud. This baby is smokin. No doubt, it is the current dominator in this price range. I had to ditch my sr7000 for an upgrade, and not wanting to spend a bazillion dollars turned into a blessing since this unit has everything I needed for my home theater setup. Well worth it. |

Strength:
Powerful, clean sound, good build quality, lots of features
Weakness:
None so far This is a great product. It's raw power is just what my Kef Reference series speakers needed. Sounds very good in both 2 channel music and movies (in THX, DTS, or Dolby Digital). If you're looking for a sub $2000 receiver, no need to look anywhere else. AVR 4800 is the one!!! Now I can truely enjoy all of the DVD movies :-) Check it out for yourself! Strength:
Sound, build, features
Weakness:
only available in black I upgraded from a denon AVR-3600 to this unit about a month ago. The sound seems to be more relaxed, highs are smoother, the rest of the spectrum I thinks is about the same. The 3600 was a great receiver so I'm not surprised. It has many usefull features that the 3600 didn't have such as the THX FOR LFE OR MAIN+LFE. Build quality is very good. The only drawback is that is not available in gold finish here in the states. The remote is not an issue for me since I have a pronto and neither is the 2 channel amp since I own an Adcom GFA-5802. IMO it is the best receiver in this price category. I got mine new at bid.com Similar Products Used: Denon AVR-3600, Yamaha DSP-3090 |
