    Strength:

Generous output and input ports, including 5 digital in and 2 digital out!

    Weakness:

Remote. No one push component switching on unit. Setup is cumbersome

I was perfectly happy with my AVR-3000 until I ran out in inputs. I have a whole house set up, so I need the remote capability that an extender won't give me, so I bit the bullet and looked for a new reciever. I looked at every brand, and knew the 4802 was the one, even though I really didn't want to spend as much as it cost. I am glad I did. First it sounds amazing, and much crisper than my old Denon, which I couldn't believe since I liked the 3000 so much. What is also great about this reciever is that it is not stingy on the input and output jacks. Its hard to find a reciever at any price range with so many hookup options. Its great knowing I'll be able to keep the 4201 around for awhile.

    Strength:

DTS-ES Dicrete, DD - Ex, Component Video switching, Lots of Digital Inputs, Pure Direct Audio

    Weakness:

    No AC3 RF

This unit is awesome! I've had it about 3 weeks and it has far exceeded my expectations. Gladiator sounds awesome in ES Discrete as does Se7en. Prologic II adds a totally new dimension to the 2 channel surround movie sources. The Pure Direct Mode for audio shuts off the video circuitry and the panel display to cut down on interference for stereo sources. SACD and DVD-Audio sound awesome from this unit in 5.1 or stereo. I just wish it had two 7.1 inputs. I guess if I wanted to spend $1000 more for the 5800 it would have the 2 inputs.

The bottom line is if I had it to do over again I would buy this receiver again.

    Strength:

    clear, powerful sound. top quality

    Weakness:

Remote (get a Pronto). The front panel user interface could be improved. I like the Integra 8.2 layout better. But once you complete the set-up, you will seldom touch the physical unit itself.

Top quality product. Powerful, flexible, true sound reproduction. Plenty of options, THX, etc.

Buy a Pronto (or better, the ProntoPro) and this is a 5 star AV receiver.

    Strength:

Pure Direct and Direct Modes, decodes every existing format, build and construction, unbelievable 2 channel & 7.1 sound. Option to use Surround Back Channels for dedicated L/R multi room setup without the need of external amplification

    Weakness:

Weight....close to 50 lbs, quite back breaking when going up 5 flights of stairs, Atkis remote sucks...or maybe I'm just spoiled

What a wonderful product....congratulations too Denon!

I just got this beastie five days ago. After a couple of hours set up time, I had a chance to do some critical CD listening.

First off, Pure Direct mode for 2 Channel or 2 channel with Sub is incredible (the 4802 shuts off all tone controls, video circutry, and the display in this mode). I always thought that my old Sony DA555ES was good, but it is not even in the same league (of course there was about a $2K difference in price!) Excellent Sound stage, channel separation, transperancy, detail...you name it definately has it....simply put, I'd say that I am astonished.

    Next up Home Theatre.

A really cool feature of this reciever that you can hook up 2 separate setups for the surround channels (eg, Have dipole rear speakers for movies and direct radiating for music). You can also use them together. Certainly, this offers tremendous flexibility.

Anyway, when it comes to Home Theatre, this reciever will suprise you with it's incredible power and presence. After watching Disney's Dinosaur, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, U571, and the Matrix I was in total awe. Unlike my Sony which leaned towards sound bright and forward, the Denon offered superb warmth and neutrality. Most notably was the huge soundstage and detail. THX DD EX and DTS ES is flatout awsome...Prologic II was also very impressive especially for TV viewing

I would highly recommend this Reciever to anybody who wants audiophile performance and the most up to date technology.

On the bad side, unlike some reviewers, I do not like the supplied remote. While it does offer pretty good programability, it lacks it design and execution. Just to difficult to use and lacks intuitiveness. The remote manual does not help at all. Maybe I am just spoiled, I have a Marantz RC5000 (Marantz version of the Pronto) and just had to spend an 1hr to program the Denon into it. Everything works like a charm! IMHO, toss or sell the Atkis, and pick yourself up a Pronto/RC5000. You will do yourself a favour!

    Strength:

Everything is great! The sound quality through my Klipsch speakers is far superior to the Denon 3600 DTS I had previously.

    Weakness:

A color remote would have been great (but also much more expensive). Other than that, I am more than pleased.

I have used Denon products for years and cannot say enough good about the 4802. When you throw in the awesome remote control, this is one of the best buys around.

The features, power, sound quality... are excellent.

    Strength:

Aside from all the bells and whistles imaginable, its main strength as to be simply put its sonic qualitites, from music to 7.1 home theater.

    Weakness:

Well, one that makes it not so seemless in my system, RCA plug video inputs cannot be monitored on the svideo monitor output.

Well, I started on it this afternoon, and now its after midnight, and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Very happy with the setup, it took a lot of trial and error, 10 hours of installation and trial and error stuff, what ended up being best, was rears more centered, one placed at each end of the sofa (the sofa is about 5' from the back most surround speakers), but still at the ceiling level, the side surrounds at ceiling level midway between the fronts / center distance wise. I just went and got plain old 14 gauge speaker wire, stranded copper, used it for everything.

The monopole Yamaha's seem to be breathing very easy crossed at 120hz, almost nothing coming out the 8" woofer. The 800 watt THX sub, just seems to rock no matter how I cross over to it. I listened to movies and music at ridiculous levels. I thought the sub was going to actually damage my house at times.

7.1 is way cool, things did make me jump, that had not before, some things almost made me dizzy... lol

DPLII seems almost to good to be true, I watched some of my Beavis and Butt head do America movie. Impressive. Is there an explanation of DPLII somewhere? I had a long stint as an audio engineer and would be very currious as to how they get 4 channels out of a 2 track analog signal.

7 speaker stereo,, Nice, really feels powerful, like those systems that cost $10k to $20k. If I close my eyes, the imaging is something I have never experienced before.

I am a very happy home theater camper now.

Had a Denon 4800 that record switching didn't work, only knew about it when I tried to use it 6months down the line so the guys from denon where nice enough to exchange the product with a avr-4802 (with the POA5200 of course) and after completly trying it out and comparing it to the avr-4800 (that i had owned for 6 months) I can clearly say just wow damm good machine fullfills all of my H/T needs and more the power is ample and sufficent for any reasonable home and the product is very well made as for the perfomaces compared to avr-4800 sound is much defined and soundstage is a little better than the avr-4800 but just a tad less bright & powerful than the big bro avr-5800 but hardly any real big noticable diffences of the avr-5800

    Strength:

Personal Strengths: Have control of what you
NEED. The choice is your's. Don't deny your
    entertainment/home theatre. Change is good.
Refuse to not embrace the evergoing technology. Simply sets you back; and I might add makes you lazy and ready to call it quits.

    Weakness:

Personal Weaknesses: A newbie to HT can be a
    big weakness. Like Fatigue/Frustration or
Manuals. I read the Denon AV manual from back to front. Same with the Remote Manual.
Back to front. There is room here for what's easy to pick-up. Not the Long Drong of step by step....make the read work for you. There is no law that states you must read anything
from page 1 to page 100. Read Page 100 to page 1 at your own leisure.

First up: I would like to say this Denon
AVR 4802 is not exactly for anyone. Remember: Unless you can afford some time
    and resolution(problem workouts(the manuals/
including remote.) Don't waste your time.
Keep this in mind-make your Denon AVR 4802
work the way it is meant to work. Hooking
up your components to the 4802 is the easy
    part.

Excited? Damn right. Again no benifit if
excitement rules. Relax, figure out your
set-up. Try to find a "Flat Moment" for
the more intricate components. For example,
my X-Box hookup was a breeze to setup. The
excitment flogged with the games I play.
    And what a sound!

Can't decide? I'll default because to much
technology is around the corner: If you
    choose this option(well good luck.)

The DENON AVR 4802: This new toy is built
like a BRUTE. Solid. Caution: If you are
    using composite(RCA) connections make sure
you can plug in(no Problem here) but..,
make sure you can get your plug out. These
types of connections on the rear are very
close together. Don't let some WHO/Who sell
you cables you can't plug in or twist out.
Mark my words: Water blisters will turn to
    blood blisters.

I don't normally respond to reviews on a product I do not own, but the previous post was ridiculous. Please remove it and this one.

Mark, first of all, MANY manufacturers do not honor warranty from a non-authorized dealer. They do this to protect themselves and the integrity of their product. In fact, it is made quite clear on Denon's site that they will not support the warranty in this situation.

Secondly, take your anger out on the place you purchased the receiver, and not on Denon. Why isn't the place replacing the product for you? This is no one's fault but your own. Maybe you people just looking for the absolute lowest price can learn something from this. Sometimes it is worth paying a little more money in order to buy from an authorized dealer. After all, where will you audition this product in the future after internet sales have killed all the brick-and-mortar stores?

I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO EXPECT $150 TO $200 TO REPAIR THE REMOTE. DENON'S WARRANTY POLICY IS THE WORST IN THE WORLD, SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, PERIOD. MY EXPERIENCE SAYS DENON BUILDS UNRELIABLE PRODUCTS AND THEY WON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. BAD COMBINATION, NEVER AGAIN. NO MORE DENON. BURNED ONCE SHAME ON DENON ..... BURNED TWICE SHAME ON CONSUMER. HOPE ANYONE CONSIDERING PURCHASING DENON CONSIDER MY EXPERIENCE.
