    Strength:

    Processing, processing, processing. Flexibility.

    Weakness:

No balanced outputs. (Not expected from a measly $2000 receiver)

I replaced my venerable 4800 with the 4802. The stuff I have currently connected with the 4802:

    Klipsch Reference Series speakers
    Velodyne FSR-12 subwoofer
    Mitsubishi 65859 TV
    Krell KAV-250 amps
    Toshiba SD-6200 DVD/CD
    Sony HD-100 Sat. Receiver

I use my 4802 mainly as a pre-amp with the Krell amps. Everything sounds better, including the Velodyne. If the Denon had balanced outputs, you wouldn't have any reason to spend $8000+ on a higher-end pre-amp. DTS, Dolby, 7- channel stereo, all sound incredible. I initially hooked up the 4802 without the Krells to test the amplifier section. Three CD's later I realized I still had not powered up the Krells yet. Are these Klipsch speakers? Is this sound coming from a $2000 receiver? My jaw dropped when I popped in the Police DTS audio disc. I prefer music in two-channel format. Well, I used to anyway. As for initial set up, I found it to be easy, if you read the manual. If you're a little slow, it may seem difficult. As for the remote, I happen to like it. It doesn't require a life-time commitment just to set the thing up like the Philips Pronto. (Sorry Philips, I am not ready to devote the rest of my life setting up your remote.) Home theatre has become a religious experience again. Thank you Denon, for saving me thousands of dollars on higher-end over-priced garbage once again!

    Strength:

All the latest formats. Built Like a Rock.

    Weakness:

The Remote is not for everyone. It's no pronto.

The speakers that I listened on.

    B&W 9NT Fronts
    B&W CNT Center
    B&W SNT Surrounds
    B&W DM303 Surround Backs

The 5800 is the one of the best receivers ever and according to "The Perfect Vision" it was the product of the year.

While the 4802 isn't a 5800, it costs considerably less but performs almost as well. The sound is warm, natural, and spacious in 95% of situations, just slightly constrained with some tough 2 channel music on really finicky 4 ohm speakers, but it sounds fine on my set up which is all that matters to me.

The set up was not like play school, but not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Basically just a few settings and assign one of your digital inputs to the correct selector input and you're good to go. Once your speakers are calibrated (shouldn't take more than 5 minutes), it automatically detects DD,DTS,DTS-ES,or THX EX so that's a no brainer. It has full bandwidth HDTV switching with no apparent signal loss (as far as I can tell).

Anyhow, you buy an integrated receiver first and foremost for sound quality. Sometimes I turn off all the lights in my HT and put in a SADE, Santana Multichannel music disc and I really do feel like I'm in the middle of a concert. The sound all around is so natural and detailed without sounding harsh or bright. This is a very serious piece of equipment, but please listen for yourself first.

I did and I have no regrets. My music and movies never sounded so good before.

    Strength:

    Great looks, powerful, THX certification.

    Weakness:

Remote, Menus are a little confuse, lack of tape 2 inputs

Overall, I´m very happy with the Denon, but I don't hear that much difference between it and my old DSP-A3090, music had much more presence with the Yamaha, and I really miss the DSP sound fields. Why the change? Lack of DTS, THX certification, component video inputs, and other new technology.
It was very expensive (almost $3,900.00 USD) since the importation taxes in Mexico increase the price a lot.
I really hated the Atkis, so I cloned it to my Pronto, but I had some problems with the Page/cursor button in the Atkis, couldn't clone it.
I'm an electronics lover, usually need to read a manual just once before I can do anything with my gear, but with the Denon I had to read over and over and after almost a month, there are some things I still don't understand.
But it´s a great receiver, my Infinity Prelude sound great and the DTS is simply spectacular.

    I upgraded my 3801 to the 4802, and I'm happy I did.
I tested the 5800 flagship, but could not see spending
the extra money for a lazer disc input and 170watts apposed
to 125watts. To say the least, this receiver is beautiful.
If your a fan of 2 channel stereo, you'll adore this unit.
ALPHA 24 processing is something to be heard. This feature,
puts all focus on your front mains giving you a staggering
amount of clairity. Reguardless of musical taste, be it
classical to grindcore, this feature will bring out the
tiny details, the most stubborn audio fan will not deny.
7 channel stereo will project more volume, giving off a
feeling of total power, wile being surrounded by music.
Prologic 2, seemed to be another hyped up format. Now that
I have tested this myself with Direct tv, it is no longer
just hype. Prologic 2 is way more stable than Neo 6,
in terms of direction. This feature, is one you will
end up loving, even for music. Home theater is a bonus for
me. I did not notice a HUGE differents over my 3801, but
enough to justify money spent wisely. Gladiator in DTS
ES descrete 6.1 sounds amazing. Lesser formats, like DD 5.1
and mono movie sound great as well. There will be no more
grease fingers touching the face of this beautiful receiver. The remote is fit for a king, putting you in
complete control of all your A/V needs. Nothing has been
left out on this one. I can't say enough great things
about it. The bottom line is, try it for yourself.
Hopefully, you'll love the 4802 as much as I do.
Thanks to Audio Review for letting us share our opinions.
    Good Luck!

    Strength:

    Remote,clean face,inputs,sound quality.

    Weakness:

Only 1 sub out. After that still looking.

I have been using this product for just about a month. I bought it over the net for $1750.00.
I must say that from the Sony I had been using to this is night and day. This Receiver is awesome. I think the remote is great. I had all my other equipment named and programed in 1 day. Yes the Pronto remote my be better but I could not see paying to go to it.
The front of the receiver is very clean looking. The Pure direct mods should satisfy 80% of you "audiophiles".
The only problem is that you will find yourself buying more cd's.
Home theatre is King with this receiver. Every format is in it. Thus its going to cost you to upgrade your speaker system to take advantage of em.I.E. center rear speaker.....

I say buy it on the net. Yes there are many scams out there and do be careful. This Authorized v Nonauthorized is Crap. Its price fixing. Look for service AND price.
My " authorized" dealer wanted $2250.00 out the door. That was a "friend" price. WTF.
This receiver puts smile on my face everyday I turn it on.

I'm very pleased with the performance of this unit. It is very well built and has every feature that anyone could want except for AC-3 LD input. The sound is on the warm side which fits well with most home theater speakers. It sounds excellent on 2 channel stuff too. Pro-logic 2 is a real plus that makes regular TV and CD's sound almost 5.1 discrete. I find the sound to be very similar to my Denon 5700 which it replaced. A little pricey for a non-flagship but well worth it. I can't imagine anyone complaining about anything with the possible exception of the Denon remote which takes some getting used too.

    Strength:

Sound, power for the price, ease of set up, all the bells and whistles (Dolby Pro II, THX, NEO: 6 etc).

    Weakness:

Sheesh, you need back support to lift it, this thing weighs a ton!!! Aktis Remote, Denon's pathetic warranty policy.

I just got this hefty machine, and although I felt sorry for the poor UPS guy who had to lug it up three flights of stairs, I figured, better him than me.

I had an old Denon AVC 3000 that I bought about 100 years ago, and even though it STILL worked like a charm, I bought new speakers about a year ago and the AVC just couldn't drive them. So, I figured separates were too far out of my budget considering that digital receivers are on the affordable horizon. I bought this to hold me over until then.

What can I say? The sound is great for $1700, and it has all the bells and whistles I will need until the next upgrade to digital.

Muscially, it sounds quite good, but I don't think music folks would be all that impressed with this machine. It sounds good and clear, but it does lack true transparency. Denon's real strength is home theater, and the 4802 surely delivers. On the THX setting, the sound just envelopes the listener. Sounds seem to be coming from everywhere, not matter how minute. Try Saving Private Ryan or Gladiator, you will see what I mean.

Ok, on to the not so great... The Aktis remote is a bit cheesy and counter-intuitive. It is rather simple, which I appreciate, but its design is so simple that it becomes cumbersome and repetitive. OH, and this is not a one hand remote. It is HUGE and I am not sure why. Palm pilots are much smaller and handle much more information. Also, a stylus for it would have been a nice touch. I have small fingers but anything on your fingers ends up on the remote face. When you clean it, all of your machines turn on and off. I know this is nitpicky, but, like I said, a stylus would have been a nice touch, not manditory.

Now, my biggest gripe. Denon's warranty policy. If you buy one of their products from a nonauthorized dealer, your machine is not covered by the warranty. Of course, when you look up the prices at an authorized dealer, often they are hundreds of dollars more than a nonauthorized dealer. I realize they do this to control the price and the profit margin, but it strikes me as slightly Facist-esque. I went ahead and bought my machine from a nonauthorized dealer and saved about $1500. My last Denon product broke down once in the 12 years that I owned it. If I remember correctly, it had a burned out wire, which cost me about $10 to repair. I hope this new machine has the same track record.

    My system:

    Denon DVD 2800
    Denon AVR 4802
    Pioneer PDR 19RW
    JVC HR-S7100U
    Sony ES CD
Paradigm Monitors (front, center and surround)
    Proscan 36"

This is the best receiver out there in this class. Five optical, three coax connections are more than enough for my equipment. After I upgraded from 3802, I noticed a big difference in sound's fullness and clarity. 3802 is not by any chance a bad receiver (actually in its price range would be my first choice), but in my opinion 4802 is worth every penny in price difference between these two models. I also have a good use for wide bandwidth component switching capability of this receiver because my Sony XBR10W has only one component output capable of high definition display. Bass managment flexibility is a big plus and a significant upgrade from 4800 Denon model. I highly recommend this receiver. Also, reliableaudiovideo.com has them on sale now. They cover manufacturers original warranty and so far their service has been excellent.

    Weakness:

    NONE.

RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX THE UNIT WAS TOUGH! THIS UNITS AMP WEIGHS SO MUCH THAT IT COULD BE USED AS A BUNKER BUSTING BOMB IN AFGHANISTAN. IT HAS ALL THE FEATURES YOU COULD DREAM OF WITH FUTURE UPGRADES AVAILABLE. FIVE OPTICAL INPUTS AND THREE COAX DIGITAL INPUTS COMPLIMENT ALL NEW DIGITAL DEVICES, ESPECIALLY MY HARMON/KARDON-CDR30. THE BACK IS THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN. IT IS LAID OUT SO NICELY, I CAN'T BELIVE IT. FOR SOMEONE WITH BIG HANDS ITS EASY TO HOOK UP THIS PIECE IN A BREEZE. THE SOUND QUALITY ELEVATED ME TO CLOUD NINE. THE REMOTE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL. SONY SHOULD TAKE NOTE. NUFF SAID.
