Hi,

I wanted a home theater amp that would make movies sound powerfull, and i wouldn't wonder "how would it sound with more power???" and it accomplishes that task hands down!
But IMO, the strong point of this beast is sound quality in pure direct mode, this amp would eat most of the AV receivers out there when it comes to music!
the expression "they don't make em like they used to" applies perfectly for this monster.
Maybe the newer mid range HD receivers would outperform it when it comes to digital sound for movies, etc.
But for pure power the A1SE (5800) delivers seriously! Just by lookng at it and picking it up, you realize how serious Denon was to have the best TOTR receiver out there at the time.

Very big sound with great highs and lows although the highs tend to get bright at times ( only with bad recordings)

kind of harsh but i think im blaming that on my speakers.

I use to have the Denon AVR-3300 running a pair of Def Tech BP2006. I soon decided i wanted to upgrade to the avr-5800. After doing so i thought my reciever could sound so much better then what my speakers could offer. So i decided to upgrade my speakers to the new Def Tech BP7002. The sound i heard was amazing. I havnt heard such great sound since back when I use to always buy high end audio components. The people who bashed this reciever need eaither a better pair of speakers or a better pair of ears. You need sperares to sound this good.

no 5 way biding posts, atkis remote is cheezy and you can't see the onscreen menu of the receiver when hooked up with Component video out. Also doesn't upconvert s-vid to component out like the newer 5803 does.

After looking at many top notch AV receivers on the market. I chose this one for many reasons over the next. For one, the thing has every adjustable paramter avail. You can adjust each speaker to suit your room acoustics, including time delay, and tone, ie. cushy couches, off set centers, etc. This is amazing, the unit is built like a brick $hit house, And I liked that they offer an upgrade. Sedondly, It offers what they call PURE DIRECT, which shuts off all of the video switching and just has the shortest route to the speakers. Very nice feature. Besides having every available option that any home theater enthusiast would enjoy, THX-EX, DTS-ES, Wide, Cinema, etc., it also has offers an option for listening to every speaker. I mean why put those other speakers to rest when not watching movies? great for driving the neighbors crazy. It's not noisy and offers a host of other features to boot. Performance is everything the reviewers claim it to be. Build quality looks good from outside the case.

The RC8000 remote is not user friendly compaired to a Pronto remote.The Atkis RC8000 product support online has an updated program for the remote. This download did not work for me. I spent the better part of a day reprograming, because everything I had stored had been lost. The 5800 was and is advertised as being upgradable. Denon forgot to mention the $800 upgrade price.What will next years upgrade cost? In my case, this $3000.00 plus receiver and remote did not outlast the warranty.

Ipurchased the Denon 5800 online when it first hit the market. It was great for the first year, everything the reviewers claimed it to be. After 13 monthes of enjoyment, functions started to go out. The volume control,input selector,and function control knobs on the receiver no longer worked. The same functions could still be controlled from the remote so I could still use it. Well, after 24 monthes of use, the wonderful remote has died, so now I have a 61 pound door stop. Denon will not warranty its products unless purchased from an authorized dealer. Regretfully, I was not aware of this when making the purchase two years ago. They did not have this information posted at that time. I would like to know how many others have had the same problem, if you have please send email.My address is listed in my profile. Thinking of starting a class action lawsuit. For all that have purchased from authorised dealers, I wish you the best and hope your 5800's last longer than mine did. It costs aprox. $100.00 to ship everytime it breaks. Conclusion: If given the opportunity to go go back two years. I would have saved a few dollars more,waited a few more months and bought separates. Performance is superior and much more dependable. All the heat contained in one cabinet(receiver) cooks all the electronic components over time.

You simply can't trust the decisions made by those in magazines. "Audiophiles." RIGHT! Let's call it paid advertisement. Folks, let's keep it real. I'm not hear to slander, i'm simply here to convey the truth. This unit's power isn't truthfully 170 watts. Give me a break. The lower end Onkyo models have better sonic quality. I've since moved this unit into our game room and am now using Integra's DTR-9.1. That's Innovation for you. This unit exceed's the expectation of man and women. This unit is sound both musically and in tune with the latest and greatest movie formats. Not to mention that Integra stands behind their products an their products are truthfully upgradeable. No disceptions alot like B&K's AVR 307. Sorry guys, it's another Tweeter product. Well, my beef isn't with them. They can't help what they sell. But Integra, is the truth. Without Question

All 62lbs.!! Proper form is not an option when racking in!! That's if you got a rack it will fit in!! From the time introduction - until the upgrade it sold for $3800 retail(some places you could get for less)they never lowered the retail. the new model(same+ a few bells) is $4599 i think, and during a ression!! a componet you could buy, keep for 2 years then sell for more than 50% of price paid. Unheard of "I'll probably keep mine 5-8 more years then use it for an amp.

The remote is a pain in the a--!! the screen flipping will make you crosseyed. the bass management is ok "its above 80hz or below 80hz. would like to be able to set range for each channel (then again if i could set the sub out at 40-50hz my mirage would scare the ---- out of me

cousin works at home theater is why i got it for $2250 It's true, all of it,this is one of those rare items that live up to the hype+. "its the closest thing to separates on the market" in pure direct mode or any mode for that matter its better than a lot of seperates. have never seen volume turned 100% and still clean,clear sound 130db+ , but thats not the real reason for all the power. The head room with volume set @ -20 is HUGE i know i sound like one of those that have the biggest badest every thing ,but the trouth is 'I did not write this to brag about my stuff. Produces great sounding audio on my M&K speakers. Quite easy to use and understand.

Only 3 component inputs. I have two dvd players and a sat all with component outs. Now I want to hook up a pc. This unit has 8! svideo inputs - who needs so many svideo these days!? Upgrade? people want to be able to easily hook up pcs and multiple component sources to this high end receiver. That is what should have been included in the upgarde. Not a single smart av manufacturer out there to allow us to finally take a vga output and plug it right into the av receiver? Stop chasing thx certs and give us something we can use please.

Good product. No problems so far. Never dared pass the +10db volume setting. Produces very good sound on my M&K speakers. Not very happy to hear there is an upgrade already. Am I supposed to move my wall unit, disconnect everything and send it to Denon? That is not even funny.

Power, ease of use, simple face plate, unpretentious, customizable surround parameters, DTS ES, flexible remote, ergonomic speaker post placement, ability to upgrade, and did I say power.

None that I give a shot about.

My (ex-)wife stole the receiver when she threw me out of the house after catching me...that''s another story. Since then, I''ve had many months to research a replacement (receiver and wife). Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Carver, etc. Not because separates aren''t better, but because I''m not one of those pretenders who gets his jeans dry-cleaned. I want a great receiver, not a bunch of cables running all over the floor connecting who knows what to whom. Needless to say, the receiver is a powerhouse. I bought it to replace what was the flagship receiver of its time - the Pioneer VSX 9500 and it is much the same in terms of build quality. Metal instead of plastic and a real solid feel to it. In terms of value, it can''t be any better than a 3. You are paying for what you are getting. That''s not a bargain. Not sure it''s worth the upgrade to the 5803. If the court gives it back, I''ll probably keep it instead of upgrading.

A little bright.

This is my first review of this very excellent product. I am upgrading from 10 year old equipment and that has to be taken into account but the the Denon 5800 is an excellent piece of equipment. I must admit that I am looking at the Pioneer 49TX but so far I am not willing to let go of the sound this receiver. Where it really shines is in direct mode. My CD''s never sounded better. I find myself re-listening to old CD''s and finding them to be much more enjoyable. I probably am driving my neighbors nuts but I guess that is a price to be paid. For the price a great sound.

This receiver is incredible! I have upgraded to this one from the Denon AVR5700 (for sale if anyone is interested). The super direct mode is awesome. Sound is crisp, tight, and open. Using the Denon DCM5000 for CD and the Denon DVM3700 for DVD. Nothing can touch this system. Infinity RS10 for mains and Infinity HPS1000 for the sub. If you can get one of these receivers do so. Nothing can touch it. Hmmm maybe the new 5803 :)
