Strength:

Most switching capabilities than any other receiver on the planet. Has everything you could possibly want and more in one nice package. If your a stickler for separates you will have to spend at least $10,000 to match the quality of, and what it all does. My guess is it won''t sound SIGNIFICANTLY better...by that I mean unless you have an extreamly well trained ear you won''t notice the difference and will have wasted your money that you could have used for something else in your system like better cables or more entertainment media.

Weakness:

Absolutely none once you opt for the upgrade then you can easily say you have the latest and greatest.

The B&K AVR 307 is a very good receiver, and is American, but if you want the best bang for your buck go with the Denon AVR 5800 it sounds just as good and has more features/options. The Denon is also upgradeable too. The Denon also out weighs the B&K by 10-15 lbs. which gives you an idea of whats under the hood.(alot of heavy quality electronics) You can get a very reasonable deal on the 5800 now at most retailers that still have them on their shelves seeing as that model is being replaced by the Denon AVR 5803. You should be able to find a demo unit for around the $2,500-$2,700 range. Don''t worry about it being a demo you are actually better off considering it is probably already "burned" in which saves you the wondering or possibilty of the new unit being faulty. The demo has been used for at least 8 hours a day working the bugs out of it and will not have been abused considering the cost factor would have kept most people away from it anyway. I bought mine as a demo and saved myself over $1,200 from what the retail price was (not from the internet either). Next month I will be able to purchase the upgrade for the 5800 which will basically make the 5800 a 5803 identical twin. The Denon AVR 5803 will retail for $4,300 even with paying for the $800 upgrade my total investment will be $3,400 ($900 less than the cost of a 5803) If you find any 5800''s left in the stores snatch them up while you can you won''t be disappointed, unless of course you don''t mind spending the $4,300 on the 5803.

Strength:

Excellent playback of DTS EX and THX Surround EX encoded movies. Music is just as stunningly accurate as well. My system set up is: Denon AVR-5800, Denon DVM-3700 dvd player, Monster Powers HTS-3500 line conditioner, Yamaha EQ-70 equalizer, Hitachi 32" ultra vision monitor, Mitsubishi S-VHS VCR, Cerwin Vega DX-9''s for the front L&R, Cerwin Vega DX-7''s for the surround L&R, BIC V62 center channel, and 2 BIC V62 bookshelf speakers on stands for the surround back channels. All connected with Monster Cable interconnects for the components, and Monster Cable''s Z1 series speaker cable for all 7 speakers. BUY THIS RECEIVER you WILL be VERY HAPPY!!

Weakness:

That I didn''t wait for the AVR-5803. Although I hear the MSRP for the 5803 will be around $4,300.00, and I can get the upgrade for the 5800 for about $800.00 which will give you the Dolby Prologic II, Dolby Headphone, and THX ULTRA 2 certification(music). Denon electronics in New Jersey is doing the upgrades I hear. I will have to call and find out more.

This is in reguards to my last review entry. I have discovered how to properly hook up an equalizer to the AVR 5800. If you have a dvd player that plays both music cd''s and dvd''s this will work for you(if you want to play with individual frequency levels for both movies and music). Use the analog output from the back of your dvd player, and plug in to the line-in input of your EQ. Then use the line-in output from the EQ and plug into the composite audio inputs on the back of the AVR-5800 (I used the cd input on the 5800)Then you have to switch to "analog" on the 5800 instead of digital. Digital will work only if your using the digital coaxial or fiber optic inputs on the 5800. However, you will not get the EQ to work in the digital mode since it is connected with analog connections. It is nice though to be able to switch back and forth to compare the digital sound versus the equalized analog sound. The 5800 plays both modes with exceptional quality. Most audiophiles will probably agrue that all eq''s do is add distortion to the source you are using and that they are just giant glorified tone controls. However you feel about that is up to you everyone has different tastes. Some people don''t like the harsh bright sounds, others want a little more warmth and natural sounds, and there are those that like earth shaking bass. With an eq you can individualize the frequency bandwidth to your own listening needs/desires I''ve thoroughly enjoyed the THX surround EX, and DTS ES surround modes that will change a 5.1 channel movie and make it a 6.1 channel movie to give it that added dimension that makes it feel as though your right there in the action. Some great movies to try out with this system are in no particular order are: Gladiator,Planet Of The Apes, Saving Private Ryan, Star Wars(the phantom menace)-which by the way was the first movie created using THX Surround EX technology.Another great one was Pearl Harbor-some of the scenes made you feel like you needed to duck to avoid a plane hitting you. The system is very easy to hook up and set up I think. I read some reviews from some people thoght it was to complicated-not true if you can hookup and program a vcr you wont have a problem. As far as the remote control I think it''s great I''ve eliminated all of my other remotes so the coffee table isn''t covered with nothing but remotes anymore.

Everything for the price

Has anyone been able to hook up an equalizer with this unit, and if so what input selector/recout selector is used? Currently I have the line input on the EQ going into the output on the back of the 5800''s cd recorder/tape 1 output, and the line output on the EQ going into the 5800''s cd rec/tape 1 input. I have not been able to find the right input selector on the denon to be able to hear the EQ kick in. It previously was hooke up to a Denon PMA 1080 with no problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have had the Denon 5800 for a month now and the sound for both Music and Home Theater is outstanding.

I had the new Yamaha in my house for 2 weeks as a demo and then got the Denon and I was surprised at the dramatic difference. I am using KEF speakers which like a little more power and the Denon has a lot to spare.

This is a great unit.

Strength:

Physical appearance will humble your friends.
Sounds great.

Weakness:

Very detectable hiss. Noisy fan.

I am hours to days away from buying a new reciever.
Last night I was at the local elite Hi Fi shop where I was
listening to speakers and recievers. I got a chance to listen to the latest Denon Reciever and have to say I was shocked at the results but not in a good way. At first the salesman had me listening to a Rotel seperates setup while playing Godzilla but he then switched over the cables to the 5800. When he switched them back to the Rotel I noticed a hiss that disapeared and pointed it out. He plugged the cables back into the Denon and we listend for it but couldn't hear it again and he wrote it off as the sound of the store's air conditioning shutting off. after a couple more switches back and forth we noticed it again on the Denon. The speakers when plugged into the Denon gave off a very apparant hiss. When he plugged them into the Rotel... Nothing. This was very disheartening given that I was seriously considering the Denon reciever. The salesman confided in me in a reluctant hushed tone that they (The stores staff) had been disapointed in Denon's products as of late as far as preformance and reliability. (They'd been recieving a lot of faulty unit returns) He also told me about how he'd noticed the Denon was running very hot when sitting in standby mode doing nothing and how the fan kept coming on and off every 2 minutes for no reason.
Now the Denon 5800 is a lot more expensive than the Rotel package I was looking at so I don't think the salesman was trying to sway me one way or the other. He could make a lot more money selling me the Denon. But he highly recomended I go with the Rotel seperates setup over the Denon all in one sys. After hearing that hiss I tended to agree with him.
When I started considering Rotel more seriously he told me about the Rotel RSP 985. Then he remembered they had a discount deal a ways back on the 985 with with 2 amps (RB991 & RB 993) where he thought they might have 1 set left that a customer who had it on hold might have changed his mind about. He checked and they did indeed have it.
So instead of buying the hissy Denon for $5800 CDN I could get the Rotel stuff for $4500 CDN instead of the usual price of $7500 CDN. His attitude on the fact that they still had this set available was "GRAB IT! Don't think, just do. Hands down better over the Denon."
Reading the other reviews here. I see people have done hiss tests and heard nothing and have no comments about the fan other than it being completely silent. This is all contradictory to my experiences with it so I'm really confused now. I'm going to continue reading reviews and hopefully I'll be able to reach a decision as to which set I want to get.

Strength:

Very Clean Sound. The best 5.1 sound heard to date!

Weakness:

None

I first would like to say that Joe must own the yamaha rxv1 or something that he is very ashamed of,to put this receiver down as much as he did, I'm sure he is very upset with his own equipment.
Now about the AVR5800

I just sold my sony 9000 preamp and 9000 amp.I have been reading and waiting for this unit for some time now.To get a good review of the 5800 read the latest issue of widesceen review.

This unit makes every unit I have owned in the past pail in comparison. The sound and clearity of each channel is nothing next to amazing!!!. I Have only used it for a few days and can't get over how good it sounds.I will write a more in depth review after using and watching my collection of movies with it.Can't wait for Jurassic Park in DTS DVD!!!!

Home theater sound, flexibility of speaker configuration. Ease of use and overall build quality.

Weakness:

X freq limited to 80 hz

Outstanding home theater sound. 6.1 is great-larger and more prom. rear soundstage. I also own the Lex. MC-1 and find that this is very close its equal in home theater sound. I do not listen to a lot of music so I will not comment to that.
