I screened through a number of amplifiers, mostly of Japanese origin and the Harman Kardon ranges. I found the AVR10 to be among the best sounding amplifiers in the range I heard including its higher end models tuned more to home theatre.
My prime objective was to purchase a great sounding amplifier primarily for music, the AVR 10 served this purpose well. Supporting features include Dolby ProLogic surround and a builtin tuner, however the surround options of this amplifier are no longer on the cutting edge. Priced alot higher than amplifiers bearing alot more features the AVR10 is tuned into music and entry level home theatre, but the sound really does justify its cost.

I was not too happy with remote control however, it did'nt work from a respectable distance and the working angle is extremely limited. Another feature lacking in this amplifier is a speaker impedence selector as it only allows 8 ohms min on the front and centre channels. The rms rates at 40 Watts in hi-fi and 30 Watts in surround modes with rears at 20 Watts, which is ample for my purposes but some may find this department lacking. The trebel is crisp and does not irritate the ears, ear fatigue is at a bare minimum here allowing for hours of listening. The bass is clean but can get a little boomy if cranked up too much but its natural and warm as opposed to some party oriented amps I auditioned. Vocals are crisp warm and very lifelike.

As a whole this system may not be on the cutting edge but it really is a great sounding amplifier which to me is what matters most.

Strength:

Very clean stereo sound, smooth look, easy remote.

Weakness:

Bad Pro-Logic, buz in center channel, No A B speaker hook ups

The AVR 10 was my first AV receiver. I did lots of od jobs to get it when i was 15. I really enjoyed it. My frieds were all envious to it. It gave plunty of power to my JBL speakers during stereo mode, then in suround sound I had a speaker switch box hooked up so I could run my Infinity speakers. The noise was really geting to me. So I took it back to Circuit City.....they found no problem with it. But the service place scratched the front pannel up. So my salesman said "we will replace it" but no more AVR 10 were in stock so they swaped me with a AVR 40!

Using a Pioneer Elite VSX-09TX for Main use. The AVR 40 runs deck, pool, and garage speakers, While the Pioneer VSX-454 is used for a second theater room, it is linked to the Elite for signal from DVD exc....

But the AVR 10 was a Very GOOD receiver, I wish I had it back to go with my others!

Strength:

Sound Quality

Weakness:

Limited Output Power, no 5.1 capability (only Pro-Logic)

I purchased this unit as a spare when it was available on UBid for $42. Although refurbished, it arrived with all the accessories intact. I hooked it up to ensure that it worked, and was immediately suprised by how good the sound was. It has a considerably better sound then the Kenwood VR-3090. If the AV10 had 5.1 capability, I would purchase an amp and replace the 3090 with it in my Home Theatre setup. I now give preference to HK products.

Also, the construction is impressively solid.

Strength:

Great Price, Simple to Use, Great Sound

Weakness:

Not too much functionality, limited number of audio inputs.

Bought this product after listening to a few. While It is not full of features, for the $40 price tag I have to say it's great. Clear crisp sound and very very simple to use (there's not much to it).

Strength:

Fine decoding, great sound, easy to use, good looks.

Weakness:

Very sensitive in peak performance, low power, tuner is not very good, not a very great amount of functions

When I was planning to buy a Dolby Prologic receiver, I thought the Harman Kardon was very appealing, because of it's good looks and it's great, expanding and warm sound. At home I wasn't dissapointed. The receiver sounded great.
Every corner of my living room was filled with powerful sound. Especially the bass was very good.
But when you turn the beast up a bit, it starts to clip pretty fast. I have the set for more than 2 years now and my speakers are pretty damaged bcause of the broken signals the receiver sends to them.
The tuner isn.t very good either. Alhough it sounds fine, it's broken already.
