Strength:

Crips Clear Sound no matter how load you play your music or
video.

Weakness:

The remote programming was difficult and not very user friendly once programmed.

After several months of use and fine fine tuning I highly recomend this recieiver. It has plenty of input options and programmable optical inputs and one optical output that can also be used as an input. This makes using video camras a breeze with the system.

Every source input can be programmed with any type of output you like..Logic 7C,Hall, Theater, Dolby Digital..etc.

After that you can fine to the system sound for perfect listeneing quality for the room the speakers are located. Fantastic feature

The Dobly DTS is outstanding. If you have it set up for full surround sheck out the movie Gladiator on DVD recorded on DTS format. Unbelievable.

I use a Polk sub and Infinity speakers for the the 5 channels provided. L,C,R,SL,SR. Great Soung and clarity...

If you are looking for a high end sound and wanta good price I would buy this or the AVR510. They are pretty much the same but the 510 has more power and a couple of more options. Either one would be a great buy. I comparef this to Denon and Yamaha and find this to be a superior product in its price line.

Strength:

Inputs and outputs. Quality of build. Ease of setup. Sound quality.

Weakness:

EZ-set up

I did quite a bit of research before deciding to purchase this unit. I started off looking at Sony and Yamaha, but ended up choosing between HK, Denon and NAD. The sound quality of this machine is superb. The audio just comes to life when it travels through the 310. Although only rated at 50W/60W in surround and stereo modes, don't be fooled. There is power to spare and the power is clean. I am hearing details in my music and movies that I have never heard before.
The whole machine is very well built with a clean face and solid connections on the front and rear. There are plenty of inputs and outputs as well, so you certainly should be future proofed. My only complaint would be the EZ-set up feature. I don't know that this works as well as I would expect, so I decided to configure the speaker levels manually. Aside from this, I am very happy with my HK.

Strength:

Sound quality, looks, usability, bragging rights

Weakness:

Volume level deltas between sources

Overall I am very happy with this receiver. The most outstanding strength is its sound quality, which is honestly the best I have ever heard. I expected it to be better than the JVC it replaced, but I wasn't expecting it to be this much better. Saving Private Ryan on DVD is acually a different experience with this receiver.

One problem I have is that it doesn't keep your volume settings for each source, which can be a problem especially if your sources are using different surround modes. A -20 on ProLogic provides reasonable volume, but if you switch to a CD running straight stereo prepare to wake up the neighbors. I just have to remember to turn it down before switching sources.

Superb Sound, Flexibility, & Aesthetics

Weakness:

None!

Spoiled by Denon's excellent sound, it wasn't easy for me to select a different A/V receiver that had the Front A/V/S-video inputs to hook up my Camcorder. (don't know why Denon does not offer front inputs). Glad I picked H/K's AVR310. At $250, although refurbished, I couldn't believe the looks, sound, and overall performance! Plenty of juice for my condo-size living room. No problems with the remote either. I would recommend using manual speaker output setting rather than EZSet. All in all, an excellent receiver. Must use nicer cables though. Bought some AR cables from AC4L.com. Excellent sound quality thru these A/V/S & Optical cables for less-than-half the Monstrous prices. Got the 12-guage pure-copper speaker cable from Home Depot for 31 cents/ft to connect the Polk Audio speaker system. This system ROCKS!!!

Clean simple front

Love everything about it. Set up with JBL N26's and N24's with center channel and Mirage 12" sub. Great home theater sound, hooked up to a Dolby Digital dish. This is my first system after 4 years of searching. The remote works great for me too. Maybe because I haven't used anything else. Set up a 3" cooling fan on top of the unit to help circulate the air in the entertainment unit. Really aids in keeping the temp down.
Not one complaint about this system.

Strength:

2 channel sound, flexibility, looks

Weakness:

can be confusing to configure, remote control

This is an excellent unit that gives me everyting I wanted: Outstanding sound, whether it be 2 channel or surround, Many surround options for analog sources and flexibility to set speaker levels independently for each output mode.

The Yamaha jsut simply was not impressive when it came to stereo sound. DD and DTS were fine, but the DSP modes were too much. Basically useless to me.

The Onkyo sounded excellent, in all modes. Pro Logic II is pretty cool. It's not as good as you might expect after you read the press releases, but it's a major upgrade from PL. I basically returned it because I found out you can set all output levels (especially the subwoofer) independently for each mode (DD,DTS, Stereo, etc...) with Harman Kardon. This is a great feature for me as I was constantly adjusting the sub when I switched from DD to Stereo. Stereo just was too overpowering at levels that were good for DD.

I was pleased to find out it sounds excellent. I really can't say it sounds any better than the Onkyo, just more convenient in that once the levels are set for each mode, you just sit back and relax. Both units are great.

Don't worry about 50w X 5. It plays loud and clean, as loud as any receiver I've had. With all of the extra features it has over other products in it's price range, I'd say the AVR 310 is a best buy. Looks, Sound, Flexibility. Everythin I need.

By the way, Logic 7 is just as good as Pro Logic II. I can't tell the difference. The other DSP modes (hall, theater, 5 ch stereo) actually sound good as well.

Buy this receiver!

This is one awesome unit I've tried several others and they all came close but this one hits home. the set up is easy there not allot of unnecessary options which most people don't use because if you did you would spend more time changing the settings that you couldn't enjoy the music or movie the sound pure clarity and the surround is awesome I was a little leery about buying the HK 310 because all the others rate their power allot higher the Sony DA 555es was the last receiver I used and this just makes blows the doors off the Sony . So if you're looking for a receiver that will suit your needs and allot of your wants ( in want of a Carver Sunfire ) with out disappointment then this is the one .

And as far as the remote goes who cares! it does what it's supposed to do and that's control the receiver if you want a better HK remote there is one for roughly $300.00 or the Sony remote for around that price range, so I'm sorry I can use separates for that price .

As for the ezset well that's why there's a manual option also so if you don't like what the remote decides the you can change it !!!!

None so far.

The HK AVR210/2000 was my first introduction to AV Receivers. This unit blew a transistor within less than a month, so I returned it to the supplier in exchange for the HK AVR310(AVR4000 as it is known here in South Africa). I have had this unit for 2 weeks so far without any hickups - lets hope all goes well!!!

My incomplete system setup consists of the following:
HK AVR4000
HK DVD 1
Sonor Audio Altair main speakers(made in South Africa)
Dstv
VHS

I will update my review as the system grows and matures.
