Strength:

Analytic, crystal clear and open sound, many connection possibilities, strong controlled current dumping bass.

Weakness:

NOT RELIABLE, little warmth in sound, don't need a heating in my house anymore, the Harman takes it over,

After listening to many stereo sets between $2000 and $20.000, I decided to buy a normally priced amp that combines DVD plesure with a little audiophile character and went for the HK AVR7000 in combination with the DV17 from Marantz since the DVD player of HK cannot read self burned CD's. After trying out a demo model of the AVR7000 I WAS really enthousiastic and decided to buy it.
The first AVR7000 (out of the box) had some video problems, putting white/grey characters on the screen while looking at DVD.
The second AVR (after waiting a week till the new one arrived) had no audio but a clear picture.
The third one (again waiting some days)started with a HUMMING transformer (havent I herd this before??:-) )
I called HK in the Netherlands and received an uninterested reaction from a technician so I decided to bring this piece of unreliable JUNK back to the store and bought a SR-14 from Marantz. I know this is no comparism but im one word: FANTASTIC!!!!!!! Warm sound, power enough and a beatiful design!!.

My advice (the same to the one who wanted to buy an Alfa Romeo some years ago): Buy TWO and keep one in the box. You never know when this thing will break down (China can do better!!) When this thing works however, you will have lots of DVD pleasure for an affordable price.

Alex, you combine an AVR7000 with a set of Bose (not BOSS) speakers and you blame the AVR7000 for the lack of bass. Match this tuner with some real speakers, and you will not be dissapointed in the bass output.

Strength:

Warm, clean and powerful sound in stereo mode. User friendly controls, remote. Great build quality!

Weakness:

How about DTS-ES support? 7.1 or 6.1 instead the 5.1? Over 50lbs, too heavy?

Great Reciever overall. I especially love its well balanced, warm and power stereo mode when I play CD with it. It also goes very well with my DTS movies.

It doesn't have any of those useless features such as 20 surround modes, etc.. All the money goes into its power amp and it's ability to play music well. I'm very happy with it at this point.

Strength:

Awesome!!

Weakness:

Build, reliability....

I posted earlier a very good review of the AVR7000... And I'm sorry to say that was a failure! Don't get me wrong this is a very nice sounding reciever.
But I got it now for a month, and the transformator makes a loud humm, and Logic 7 makes calculation failures and there is absolutely NO bass in Logic 7 mode(loads of bass in Pro Logic and DS).
I talked to the people at H/K in Denmark, and they said that there was another transformator (larger one) in europe then USA, and that could give some humm, and they would put another one in mine. That's no good! Why didn't they do that from the start? I don't want a piece that already been to repair...
When will it be broke again?
Harman/Kardon you suck...
Don't buy it, leave it in the store.

Hi from Denmark

Strength:

Incredible bargain, great sound quality and levels, tons of digital inputs, auto-detection of surround mode

Weakness:

Big and heavy, awful manual, inconsistent remote behavior, hard to plug thick speaker wires into it

Let me start off by saying that for $1000 this is an awesome unit!

Sure there are units with more features, but they all cost thousands more. I shopped around quite a bit, and I kept coming back to H/K. I have an old AVR 20 in my office, and ever since I've been a believer in H/K.

The sound quality in DD and DTS is awesome, and I love that at low volumes there is NO extra noise. There are more digital inputs than I'll ever use, and lots of S-video plugs as well. The front of the unit is stripped down and simple, which makes it a breeze to use. That's huge for me - I HATE overly-complicated interfaces.

Here are the cons I've noticed though:

- The manual is a waste. Not only is it lacking information, but some of it is inconsistent with what I've found.

- When I first got it, the remote was acting bizarre - sometimes the unit wouldn't respond. I replaced the batteries (that came with it) with new ones, and problem solved. Seems straightforward, but trust me - it didn't act like I would expect it to if the batteries were low

- Garbled noise when changing channels on DirecTV using optical connection. Also, sometimes it takes a few seconds for the sound to kick in.

- Slight delay when unit is detecting surround mode - you miss the first few seconds of audio for a DVD.

Overall, I highly recommend this unit. I'm a little surprised at some of the negative posts here...it's been solid for me.

For those of you who have any doubt about how awesome the HK AVR 7000 really is, check out excerpts from the January/February issue of Perfect Vision magazine:
Wayne Garcia writes:
...the sound is superb. Music lovers will be floored by the AVR 7000's harmonic complexity and richness, its way with instrumental textures, its ability to layer space, and its treatment of dynamics, transients, air-and overall ability to engage. Mozart's Serenade for 13 Weeks was breathtakingly beautiful, warm and inviting and the 7000 revealed the subtlest twists of the ensemble's interplay. It's rare for a receiver to carve out a stereo sound-stage with superb imaging and actual layers of depth, and even rarer to find one that also conveys the size and body-presence-of those instruments. But the AVR 7000 did. On the tune Teo from Miles Davis' Someday My Prince Will Come, the 7000's superb bass definition became evident, as did its remarkable ability to shove brass instruments right in your face without turning electronically edgy or bright. Vocals, too, were wonderful.
On DVD movies the AVR 7000's sonic envelope was a marvel of completeness, powerful yet refined, drawing me into each film to a remarkable degree.
In comparing the Marantz SR-19:
Drum and electric bass were warm and weighty, but didn't have the degree of tonal richness or eye-popping detail heard on the Harman Kardon.
Conclusion:
Harman/Kardon's AVR 7000 wins the top prize, with a brilliant combination of tonal and textural richness, detail, coherence, dynamic dexterity, complete envelopment and involvement. The SR-19 comes close to the HK's sound, but ultimately does not match its remarkably separates-like sonic delivery. Because sonic and visual excellence is what matters most to me, I would choose the Harman Kardon AVR 7000 for my own system.

Strength:

Warm clean sound. Ease of use. Remote. Don't need to use a heater in winter.

Weakness:

SIZE. No EX.

After never really owning good Hi-Fi equip in my life I went through some very exhaustive research. Not so much with tech specs but with my ears. This receiver seemed to put out the most clear sound with a clarity the was not fatiguing to the ears even at ear shattering levels and this little baby has power. I feel sorry for the people getting crappy models but when I bought this aboout a year ago I bought the one off the shelf that had been burnt in already and I have not had any of the problems people have listed. All in all for a mid range receiver this would have to be the pick of the lot provided you get one that works of course and its a lot cheaper now too.

Strength:

Fantastic audio. Excellent look. Simple to use.

Weakness:

Unreliable. Large. No EX.

I love the sound quality coming out of this receiver. The logic 7 is superb for music. It performed well for HT as well, with incredible detail. The remote is also simple and well laid out. Unfortunately, many models have a problem with popping sounds when in Logic7 mode and using an optical cable. Also, there are other problems that often occur with this receiver, such as the display lights flickering or turning off without warning. I experienced both problems with my receiver. It was a painful experience because I prefer the qualities of sound from this receiver to the Yamahas and Denons I listened to in the stores and at freinds' houses. (Don't remember model numbers)

If you get a non-defective unit you will be VERY happy with this receiver. It's just fantastic. Needless to say, I returned mine and expect to get either the AVR510, since the 510 is known to be more reliable even though it has less power, or wait a bit and get the soon to be released AVR8000!

Ultimately I will own the AVR8000 anyway, which should prove to be an ace. Why buy an AVR7000 when you can wait two or three months for an AVR8000 that has 7.1, THX Ultra, DTS EX etc.!!!!!! It looks like it will beat the Onkyo and the Denon flagship receivers out of the water (read some of the reviews of the Denon AVR5800 or the Onkyo 989).

My opinion might be somewhat biased since I have always preferred HK to Denon and Onkyo. I will say, though, that the Yamaha RXV1000 is a better receiver, if you can get it for a competitive price.
