Strength:

Good power. Nice amps. Nice features. Good surround sound for movies.

Weakness:

IT IS POSSESSED!!!

All around nice receiver. Kind of heavy. I don't know if anybody else has had this problem. Mine is possessed by the spirit of once living but now dead souls. I know this sounds funny. I didn't believe it at first untill I saw it with my own eyes. I was listening to an Elvis CD and suddenly smoke came out of the receiver. The lights flashed on and off in my basement. Fog was everywhere. The spirit of Elvis floated out of the HK. It began to yell at me, "Why have you released me from my eternal slumber, puny mortal?" I was so scared. Elvis hit me across the cheek, tied me up, and made me listen to him sing "Don't step on my blue suede shoes" for 10 hours straight.

This will be the LAST HK receiver that I EVER buy. I am currently in the process of returning it and getting a replacement. Maybe it is just this one unit? I dunno but I wouldn't recommend anybody playing a CD by ANY artist that is dead.

Strength:

Lots of features, great sound, looks fine

Weakness:

A little deep, takes a second to lock onto a new digital source, remote seems a bit flakey

I love the features and the sound output of this receiver for some medium sized speakers in an apartment. Sound is warm, accurate and has a great dynamic range. The unit handles pretty much anything I dish out to it. Lots of digital inputs (and other inputs), great DAC and power to spare for most applications. I don't use most of the "fancy" features. I don't think I'd replace it with anything else though. I do wish the remote worked with better range and it locked onto digital signals faster but when I'm actually using it, rather than fiddling with it, I couldn't be happier.

Strength:

Excellent sound, best heard to date. ACCURATE rated power 110 Watts/Channel, very reliable, beautiful, heavy duty strength, pro grade.

Weakness:

The remote, but who cares, they spend their budget on sound, where it counts.

Being an audiophile who owns a home theater shop, and being in the business for over 7 years, with prior experience. I would like to clear something up. No I am not an online merchant trying to sell the item. Let me clear it up for the people that are complete idiots who think this product stinks. If george lucas uses the same damn thing, would that make it suck? Come on, you people running these recievers off batteries? Crank the baby up, don't use it as a seat. It can play better than recievers TWICE or more than their prices. BMW's don't use Harman Kardon speakers and source units for the hell of it, because they are TOP of the line. So get some good speakers to listen to the reciever on, like som Acoustic Research AR1s, or some NHT speakers, or even get some Excailber speakers. Quit whining cause your mom was too cheap to buy you the AVR-700, and got you a Sony reciever and pasted the Harman Kardon logo on it. Thats all I have to say. I recommend this reciever to ANYONE who wants the best sound, and the highest quality. And for home theaters its a must, except wait for the AVR-8000 model to come out which features THX-ES, 6.1/7.1 DTS ES, and THX Ultra, and Dolby Digital, and DTS standard, and Dolby Digital II. The AVR-7000 is top of the line, feel free to e-mail me with comments anyone may have. :)

Strength:

Power, remote functionality

Weakness:

remote design, harsh sound

Maybe there's something wrong with the unit I got (got a refurbished one). Anyway, the sound is way too bright and harsh. The bass is weak. There is virtually no warmth in the music.

Mighty grateful if somebody could advise me on this: could it be that the unit is defective? Should I exchange it?

All three receivers I have had before this (Aiwa, JVC and Pioneer) have sounded better than it (identical setup).

Speakers: Infinity RS-8 mains, Infinity BU1 sub, Wharfedale Modus Music Center, Klipsh Quintet surrounds.

Got it for $529 + shipping ($60) from ubid.com

Strength:

style, ease of use, multiple configurations, better quality remote

Weakness:

very heavy (draw back to in having quality parts)

initially skeptical considering the flops that plagued the previous line. on faith and a little research, i ordered the avr 7000 hoping it would perform to its billing.

i am extremely pleased with this product. the unit is beautiful and simple. it was very easy to install and configuration is very intuitive. outstanding sound stage and generous power.

hopefully the quality continues... bought mine for $1200. a little pricey, but i'm happy with my decision.

Strength:

Excellent sonic performance, great styling, plenty of inputs

Weakness:

Heavy!

Had to wait forever for this jewel, but, my local dealer finally got them in. I unpacked it and was more impressed with the styling than in the product literature. Very clean and easy to use fron panel.

Plenty of inputs on the back and it did pass through the progressive outputs from my DVD player. The salesman wasn't sure so I was a little nervous.

A friend brought over a Denon AVR5700 and we did some comparisons. I wasn't sure how it would perform against the $2,800 Denon, but, the Avr7000 definitly had the edge in sound. The bass was very tight and it seemed to have much more raw power than the Denon even though it was rated at less power. 5.1 movie tracks were realistic and Logic 7 even maid some of my Dolby pro-logic video tapes sound closer to 5.1.

This weekend I'm running the wires to my bedroom for the multiroom video, can't wait to get that hooked up. Excellent value for the money.

Strength:

Superb HT/Music playback, asthetics, ease of use, ample power

Weakness:

Its a heavy SOB! :)

This receiver is one of the best surround sound receivers I have ever heard/owned. I went down to my local CC to audition it against the highly praised Onkyo DS777. To my surprise it quite simply blew it away. Sure there is a price difference but the different in HT playback to my ears was just incredible. I mostly compared these for HT but the music of the Harman was so llve I didn't want to stop listening. Setup of the unit was extremely easy. In person this unit is very asthetically pleasing. the only thing I would've changed was the front panel buttons. I would've liked them to be some sort of metal and change of color. All in all it adds a nice touch to my rack. I have yet to find one problem with the unit, no hiss, humm, distortion of any kind. It plays louder than loud with no strain in vocals or instrumentation. It is a rock solid peice wheighing in at 49lbs! I am using the AT 350THX speaker system via audioquest type 4+ cable. I am truly at the movies!

This receiver offers more than its price $1100(street) and look no further when comparing it to the higher priced units such as the Marantz SR-18, and Denon 4800, etc. I recently auditioned the 777ES and I must say that it is one fine peice. The HT it provided was incredible and I would call it a tie between the two best sounding HT receivers money can buy. The AVR-7000 and the 777ES. Value is the key here!

Stop reading and go listen to one!

Strength:

I have NEVER heard a receiver this open and revealing.

Weakness:

Remote

This receiver still amazes me everytime I turn it on....
HUGE torodial transformer...
22000 uf capacitors....
Crystal DSP....
AKM dac.....
matched transistors on the output stage...
The best multi room , multi source I have ever used...
component video switching....
LOGIC 7 music and cinema modes....
HDCD decoding....

The list of features in this $1500.00 receiver is amazing, but the sound is what hooked me. I found the 7000 to be very revealing on every disk I've played without sounding hard or bright on the top end like many other receivers that I have auditioned. The imaging is proberbly incredible but I find myself being drawn into the music so much that I forget to listen to where the band members are in the recording :) (maybe this new HK will help some other audiophiles enjoy the music instead of focusing on what type of strings are used on the guitar in the track).
The surround sound is amazing and LOGIC 7 CINEMA is my new best friend. It's not DD or DTS but gives me close to what I would hear in a 5.1 soundtrack from any stereo or pro-logic recording. I still have a lot of material that is not 5.1, Blade Runner (dvd), Star Wars collection ( may George burn in hell for not releasing it on DVD and charging $33 for the worst looking video tape transfer that I have ever seen), Indiana Jones collection, etc. and everything that I watch on SAT. With LOGIC 7 I get better front to back pans, stereo rear speakers and much better channel seperation.
This receiver is a must buy at $1500.00 and I would have gladly paid a lot more. If your considering other fine receivers like the Denon 5700, Yamaha RX-V1or Marantz SR-18 consider saving $1300.00 and look at the AVR 7000. The money might be better spent on more software to enjoy your new receiver with.....

Strength:

Clarity, Surround / Speaker memory per input, imaging

Weakness:

Sub output might be a tad on the low side... other than that, nothing I've found so far

First of all, let me make a quick comment on the review below talking about the size of the power supply. You mentioned the size of the capacitors. The capacitors do not provide power, but store power. 22,000 uF caps aren't huge, but it's got a fairly large power supply. Personally, my speakers are rated with an 8 ohm nominal rating, far above 3.2 ohms. There aren't a ton of speakers with a 4 ohm nominal rating, much less 3.2. The only reason I make these comments is because 1.) It doesn't affect me with 8 ohm speakers. Most of the time my speakers are operating above 4 ohms. 2.) Specs are great, but the music it reproduces is really what I consider important. Sure, I love to read that my new 10,000 watt Crown amp can drive a large set of pliars, but that doesn't tell me much about how it sounds. 3.) The H/K is at a fairly unique price point for features and sound quality offered. Marantz makes great stuff, I'm not saying they don't. What I am saying is that the H/K offers a pretty great balance between price and quality.

Speaking of quality... This unit has a quality feel to it. The volume control just begs to be adjusted. The sound staging produced by this unit is incredible. After replacing my old receiver, I was amazed that my speakers could sound that good! Everyone who had heard my old setup commented on how much better the H/K unit sounded. One feature I really like is the surround / speaker memory. I have my CD input setup for stereo sound, with no sub. My front speakers are powered (Infinity Preludes), and are quite accurate. However, for movie listening, I have the sub turned on. The Infinity's just can't dish out the explosions like the sub can. I no longer have to turn the sub off when I listen to music, then back on when I'm watching a movie. What a feature!

This unit also just looks great. It's a fairly tall piece, but it's rather striking in person. When the unit is off, the front of the unit is solid black. As soon as it's powered up, the display just appears out of the black.

One other wonderful feature is the front set of inputs. They aren't only inputs, but they are also outputs. This is fantastic!!! No more reaching behind the unit to find the output when I want to outsource something to Hi-8. (I do video editing on the side.)

I've only mentioned a couple of the things I like about this unit. The build quality, the sound quality, and the features are wonderful at the price point. You will be hard pressed to find a better unit at this level. Follow the advice Chris gave: Stop reading and go listen...

Strength:

Pwoerful, sleek, inputs, and outputs

Weakness:

It's Size...I won't hold it against it, Low sub-output

This reciever is a Monster, I upgraded from a AVR65 to this one and I am tickled Pink. It compliments my Klipsh Fronts and Center channel with accurate and clean sound at any range. My only problem with it is that it doesn't seem to have the sub-output that the AVR65 had, I had to adjust the levels.
