Well guys I just wanted to comment on this great reciever. I cant find any faults with this beautiful piece of equiptment.
Some reviewrs mention that POPPING sound when they pause a DVD or CD. SO F%#CKING what that it pops. Mine pops but do I whine about it NO! Nobody is perfect! Claudia Schiffer picks her nose, but she is still a perfect ten! I have never been aware of the reliability problems with HK products. What it all comes down too is that I have a great receiver that blows everything away that I have owned before. Dont let some POPPING idiots have an influence on your choice. If you are serious about QAULITY and reliability go for this unit. I have had no problem with it and this is my FOURTH HK reciever over the years!

Time to POP a DVD into this unit!

Unbelievable sound quality, power to spare

Weakness:

I can't imagine how a piece of equipment of this quality can be receiving bad reviews. It is absolutely absurd. This unit is amazing. The sound is powerful and natural. The logic 7 mode is awesome. Do not hesitate to purchase the AVR 7000. I have an incredibly good ear. If there is the slightest bit of distortion or any other udesirable sonic characteristic emitted from a receiver, I become keenly
aware of it. I can say nothing bad about the sound quality of this receiver. I agree that people posting bad reviews have either not even heard the unit or they do not have the slightest clue about what they are talking about. In other words, their ears are worthless in terms of reviewing a piece of audio equipment.

Strength:

Incredible sound for HT!

Weakness:

build,popping noises,lights flickering on and off,annoying

I purchased this unit based on HK's rep. This unit does sound phenominal(best I've heard yet), but like everyone else on this website, the problems kept going and going and going....hehe Within the fisrt 10 seconds after I powered it up, it flickered on and of about 20 times so I turned it off and tried once more. Again it flickered on and off. One more try got it to work. Thats strange I thought, but it works now. NOT! I tried some dvd's on it and found when the DD signal engaged and disengaged(for instance....pausing,chapter skip, stop, play) there was a popping noise which was very annoying. Likewise when switching inputs (vid 1,2,3,4,dvd) also a loud pop. THIS DEFEATS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF BUYING A DD RECIVER or any receiver. It is impossible to enjoy watching a dvd with special features with all these glitchy noises everytime a menu is selected. Harman Kardon did answer my email promptly saying that it is common to hear a small popping noise when the DD signal engages and disengages. That's BS for a unit that retails for $1500.
I'm sure someone out there has the 7000 with no gliches(one or two of U) I'm happy for U, but after reading all the reviews on this site B4 my replacement unit arrived made me realize that I don't have the time to waste sending this unit to god knows where to get it fixed a month and a day after the store return policy has past! All U people out there who are considering buying this unit-please,B4 it's to late try to find something a little more reliable. There are like tons of reviews here that say the same thing about this piece of crap. Do U think all these people are warning U to stay away from the 7000 for no reason at all? Of course not, they are trying to help U! For goodness sake there are dealers who have posted reviews on this site telling you that they have problems and not to buy them-THEY BREAK! If not the day U get it probably within the 1st 2 weeks(from what i've seen here). Hopefully not after the warranty runs out. What happened to this company!? If you still feel compeled to buy this thing make sure U can take it back without being charged or having to pay return shipping I found out the hard way. I gave it a 2 cause it does sound awsome for HT ( as long as U just use play and nothing else). I wont't even get on a rant about the monitor out shadowing.

Strength:

Excellent receiver, lots of features (ex. DTS, DD, HDCD), plenty of power for my system (4 ohm speakers) and lots of inputs/outputs.

Weakness:

Remote control is not as sensitive as i would like.

This is the first receiver that i have owned and the unit is very impressive (i.e. DTS, Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, S-video connections, digital audio inputs). The front of the unit is beautifully designed (especially with the display of the active input/speaker configuration) that has an easy-to-read LED display highlighting the current surround mode and input source component.

One of the HK7000's best feature is its' ability to save the last surround mode setting for each source input so you don't have to keep switching it each time you change from one source input to another (also when you turn the unit off...very nice!!!).

The majority of my listening is with stereo music and the receiver performs as well as the separates (i.e. amp/preamp) that i was previously using. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who is looking for a versatile surround sound receiver (although make sure that your component rack can accommodate the size and weight).

Shopping Info:

I looked at several other products (i.e. Yamaha/Onyko/Marantz/Denon) in the same power/features range (with preference given to the versatility of the unit along with the number and type of inputs and outputs) before deciding on the Harman Kardan 7000 (i also looked into adding a 5 channel amp and processor to my existing set-up but decided against it when i saw how versatile the receivers were compared to just a few years ago).

Before buying i read the reviews from this website as well as from Home Theater and Sound & Vision magazine. I have owned the unit for 4 months and have not experienced any of the system/channel shutdowns or bugs that are listed below (although the remote sometimes takes some effort to get the unit to respond but not a big problem).

Strength:

Powerful, warm sound. Great connections. Nice retro-design; it´s like a Porsche 911 - they keep the most design from the first model, and still it has been modified to an other product. The audioentusiasts can see the change... the others can not.

Weakness:

Remotesensor is a bit to weak, even with good batteries. The silverbuttons on the front, which are made in plastic doesn´t feel really HK. Should have made them in real metal.

I have now used my piece for three month´s and since my last review I´ve noticed a rare problem with it. It´s to hot! I mean; it really gets to warm, it smells burned ashes after a three hower movie, and it worries me. I don´t wont to rechange it, because here in Sweden you have to wait a couple of months before you get one. I know, cause I waited 2 months the last time.... Is there someone who know about some cool system? I don´t wont to open the shelf because then it will fall fur-balls from my cat into it...

Strength:

The Harman Kardon AVR 7000 produses sound that actually rivals many separates out there. With good speakers and decent components the sound is very open and warm, detailed and effortless. I myself have never heard sound like this come from a receiver before. In the sound department it can probably hold it's own against just about anything on the planet (as far as receivers go anyway).

Weakness:

Possible reliability issue, (I also have begun to experience the slight pop in my speakers when I change between certain functions).

Only recently have I made the jump to the exiting new world of audio/video. Long before audio and video really meshed together there was stereo, and I still remember the first time I got to sit down and listen to a truly audiophile grade system. It was a truly religious experience to say the least, and had a lasting impression on me that remains with me to this day. And thats when it all started, back in 1989.
Piece by piece I began to build my system with the best components I could afford at the time. The Carver C-16 preamplifier, twin Carver TFM-35's bridged into Polk Audio SDA SRS 2.3's, the Carver SD/A-390t vacuum tube CD player, a Yamaha CDX 5000 limited edition CD player that weighed in at almost 50 lb's!, a Carver TX-12 tuner, a Carver TD-1700 3-head cassette deck, and so on. Needless to say, I was the coolest kid on the block, at least in our town and at the time anyway.
I got to listen to the system for about two years before I had to pack it up and store it in a storage unit in Libby, MT. Because of a layoff where I worked I was forced to make a new career move that led to a job in telecommunications where I traveled throughout the USA as a contractor installing Northern Telecom's DMS-Digital Multiplex System.
Finally, after being on the road for about 6 years, I got a job here in Portland OR. Where I now work at Qwest, (formerly USwest) as a central office Digital Multiplex Technician. I must say that it is really nice to have a place that I can come home to every night and do my own thing.
My thing here lately has been building a new audio/video system. It includes the new Harman Kardon AVR 7000, the new Sony 36 inch Trinitron XBR, Infinity RS 5's for the front and back, a Infinity CC-3 center speaker, a Infinity BU-150 sub, the new Sony DVP-S570D DVD player, and the new JVC-HR-S9600U video cassette recorder.
A couple of months ago I had time to go back to Montana and pick up the system I had left their years ago. Last week I finally got off my duff and set it up in my spare room. Now I have two complete systems, one for audio and one for audio/video.
Now all of you are probably wondering where all of this is going and I thank you for your patience. You probably wonder why it would take so long to set up my old audio dream system after it was in retirement for so many years, especially with my devoted love for good old fashion stereo. Why would anyone be content to listen to stereo on a audio/video system when he has a system like this specifically for stereo in boxes in the very next room. The answer is simple - Harman Kardon !
The Harman Kardon has been with me for about four months now. I paid $1120.00 dollers for it at Video Only here in portland. Originally I bought the AVR 300 and they said I could take it for a test drive. I had no problems with it and it was very impressive. Next was the AVR 500, and I thought wow, this is really cool. At this point it was apparent that things had come a long way since my early 1990 audio venture. You could not have got that kind of sound from a receiver back in those days regardless of price. I decided to go for broke !
The Harman Kardon is a work of art. They put the money where it counts - in the sound. True, it does not have fifty million sound modes, but I personally never got into that kind of stuff anyway. The sound modes it does have work, and they work well. The VMAx surround mode actually had me getting out of my chair to make sure it was really just the two front speakers playing. All other modes work just as well. Wonderful.
I actually did not expect to here this kind of sound coming from a receiver. The sound is the kind of sound that is open, rich, warm, and tube-like. the sound stage was very wide and the instruments were all well placed. With the lights out, and a couple of beers down the hatch, it was easy to forget that I was listening to a sound system at all, and all that remained was the music, and for a brief moment I thought to myself, this is what its all about.
I decided to experiment. The Polk's are rated at 750 watts rms for each speaker. The Carver TFM-35's are rated at 1000 watts rms in bridged form. Could the AVR 7000 drive such speakers, I had to find out. Within half an hour I made the change. Incredible ! The AVR drove those big polks effortlessly, and the sound was right there. That says something about high current, at 75 amps of high current capability you could probably weld with this thing. Yes a truly remarkable amplifier section indeed. I am totally happy with the unit so far.
Now about that slight pop I hear in my speakers when I do certain things like change chapters while watching a DVD, or use the pause botton to momentarily stop the program. I am getting something very similar with my other system as well. There is a possibility that I could have dirty AC current in my house, a problem that has affected many a system. I guess its time to maybe start unpluging things around the house and hope for the best. I am going to look into this further before I jump to any conclusions.

P.S. DaveJ, you got problems

I contacted HK about the poor sub output. they said to switch all of the speakers to "small". It changes the crossover point to 80hz. I did and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! My sub has come alive!!!

I can't tell you how great this thing is.

Weakness:

I like it alot.

I am a F.O.H. and recording engineer. I don't have much money to drop on a unit like this. I have to tune my ears to where I feel the sound industry is going. I put my bet on H.K.. The people that listed their problems below just had a problem with the initial set up. I admit this is a finicy receiver. This thing puts out so much that all the subwoofer problems were because the speaker setting was set on large, ON ALL SETTINGS. I have not experienced the problem of a quiet sub when selecting a different setting. Make sure you unit is grounded and not double grounded. This takes care of all the other probable problems. This unit definately gets lots of kudos. Make sure you have adaquet grounding, and a decent power source and you will have no problems. This unit is well worth the price.Be carfull with grounding and do not underestimat your speakers because H.K. already determined what they consider in speaker size. This thing does everything hot and massivily. High end recording studio Lexicon effects. Too much power, Clean as a whistle, Asthetitics to kill for, I don't have enough cables to plug in the back. High end all around.

This product simply put does it all. In a head to head comparision it is equal or better than the Denon 5600 and makes the Yamaha 2095 look like a toy. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants truly amazing sound. It can be bought for around $1100.00 from authorized dealers. Give this unit a try and you will not be disappointed.

Problem with video

My post is mostly to inform rather than review. After reading several posts describing a problem with the video output of the 7000, I confirmed the problem on my unit as well. As previously reported, light backgrounds such as a sky with a darker object in the foreground result in the image showing a lighter shadow to the right of the darker image. The problem is very apparent in the "Three Kings" DVD. I called HK customer service to report the problem and to determine if the problem was a known problem. The rep investigated my report, and said that a technical bulletin was released in early June on the problem. The problem is caused by a faulty resistor, and affects models produced during the first month or two of production. The part is also in stock.

As far as performance is concerned, the 7000 has been flawless otherwise. The only other problem I've noted is that audio is interrupted when changing channels on DSS using the optical input from my DSS receiver. The sound is garbled (Max Headroom style) during the first few seconds of audio once the channel is changed. Somewhat annoying, but not a show stopper.

This receiver has more than enough balls to handle any audio or audio/video. The sound is exceptionally clear even high volume levels. Plus, the ability to save video and audio input configurations, as well as the OSD display in S-video mode is a vast improvement over the AVR-75.

Overall, this puppy rocks! :-)
