Strength:

power, wamr tight 2 channel listening, dts & dd are clear and precise,logic7 is not bad at all. so far so good, no problems.

Weakness:

hard to find a tv stand/audio shelf 20+ inches deep to hold this beast, no problems at all yet, its working fantastic.

I bought a pioneer elite and sent it back, it was a nice piece but really lacked in the 2 channel dept. surround was good though.

had an h/k 25(pro logic)before it and loved it for the 6 yrs i had it.
2 channel stereo was much warmer and clean then even the elite.

i listened to denons(mainly 3801's),yamaha's, onkyo's, sony es pieces also, none to my knowledge offer high current amperage.

the denons sound great in surround, real precise, but again lack in the music listening dept. imo.

i didnt care for sony or yamaha at all(bleh) but the onkyos all sounded warm and tight in surround.

none have that mind blowing power and bass u feel like you do when u hit that switch on the harmon avr-7000.

I know there are better out there and listening rooms in our wonderful electronics stores leave much to be desired. Circuit city for one really bites for trying to demo equipment.

I have large fronts with a sub and the thing powers them effortlessly.

Im loving this piece and so far so good on having no problems.

gl to you if u buy from ubid, there trying but they do not have the best customer service, there very slow and seem to send alot of defective stuff out the door.

Strength:

Powerfull, great in winter when the heater packs it in!

Weakness:

Hummmmmm - that bloody hum everyone was on about earlier. Perth (WA) people do yourself a favour and get all your gear shipped from Sydney, I had a deal struck up with a shop over east slightly cheaper and bailed on the deal to support local business and have handy support if anything went wrong...big mistake! it takes forever to get here when you order it and even longer to get a replacement, and the after sales service so far has been appauling at Surround Sounds anyway.

OK so heres the story.... after lisening to and researching on the net I came up with what suited me, a HK DVD10 coupled to an AVR 7000 (manufactured post Nov 2000 as previous posts had indicated was the sane thing to do). I plugged it all in according to what my codebook decyphered the instruction manual to mean and then hit the little black button followed by the illuminated red button .....hummmmm not just a little hum in the backgrond but a noise so annoying that you could not listen to a music CD below -30 without it still being intrusive. But heres the strange part it's in all channels slightly, but the front right is louder and the surround right is down right unbearable, volume has no affect on it either - it's on at the same level as soon as electrons hit that big heavy piece of Chinese made excreta. So until the rest of my gear arrives and a replacement 7000 I have 4 speaker surround. I will only give 1 star so far because I expect that when you pay so much for so called 'upper end' equipment the least it should do is work when you turn it on. HK you have burnt me and have one chance of redeeming yourselves, stay tuned to see if they come to the party....or end up on every BB on the net as bad publicity.
OK this is the "Whinge about the supplier" section and has nothing more about the HK AVR so just skip it, i just wanted to let local people know where NOT to go.
Another gripe is with the above mentioned shop. I ordered a HK AVR 7000, DVD10, B&W 604's + 601's + LCR6, and a Metz Artos 2 weeks before i was due to be able to pick it all up, after 2 weeks what i got was a damaged 604, no Artos, no LCR6 and some inferior gear to 'borrow' until mine arrives....that was 2 weeks ago. So today i made another trek over to get an answer on why i did not get it last Friday as promised and was told the usual 'theres been a hold up' and i will not see it for another week or so. The reason I have to trek over to the other side of the city is because the salesman has never returned my calls, even when i have waited on hold.
I Should have just gone the NAD and Dynaudio gear at one of the more professional competitors shops....

Strength:

Power, design, ease of use

Weakness:

Not at lot

I think I got one of the the first AVR 7000's around these parts, in april 2000. And I first noticed the shear weight.
It was quite a job to hook it up, to everything.
But once this was done, I'm pleased to say; it has worked flawless. No problems whatsoever!
I use a Sony dvd, Panasonic video, Sansui reverb and a Sony cd. And I have a completete set of Klipsch speakers, with two KLF 30 in front, KV 3 in center and two SS1's in surround. From time to time, I have considered getting a somewhat bigger center speaker, however, it's not a must.
The overall impression of the AVR 7000 is exellent to outstanding. I have not had any problems at all, with the sound, or the technical quality of this product. However, I might add; it took a while until I figured out all of the options built in, in this product. And I don't think there's anything the matter for a most heartfelt recommendation to anybody who's looking for a reciver like this!

Strength:

Power, Dead silent with no signal present(problem with Previous HK receivers), Design and Overall Value

Weakness:

Remote, (LCD touchscreen would be nice), Manual, depth of chassis

I have been very pleased with the performance of the receiver thus far. Have not been able to find a weakness or any design flaws like those posted. Wonder if any of the people writing the 2 or 3 line negative reviews have actually owned the receiver or if they work for a competitor? For what the receiver costs I can't see how you can beat the $/performance ratio. I don't think you could find a comparable performing Sony ES, Dennon or Yamaha receiver near what I paid for this one. I've got a DVD 5 also and have had no problems with the performance or set up of the units. I'm not married to HK but $ talks...

Strength:

Much Power

Weakness:

Remote control, and flicker in processor

I bought the Harman Kardon a few months ago. I bought it with a DVD 1 player.

The receiver has much power and the sound quality is very high. DTS and DD are very good. It sounds loud en there is much deep. The speakers I use are B&W 604 and the Dipoles THX. I set the receiver on +3 Db and all the music stays good, no distortion.

It's nice to know there is a THX logo in the screen, you can see it when the DTS logo is on.

The only problem i have is the signal from the dts and DD. If a DVD must begin the speaker setup is flickering, it takes time to get sound, maybe 1 or 2 seconds. That's very annoying, specially if the dts trailer is playing and the sound is starting later.

otherwise a good produkt and i have much pleasure with this AVR 7000.

Strength:

plenty of power, delivers good solid bass, nice rich sound

Weakness:

none

I can understand the bad ratings when this unit blows up on someone. It's to bad, because this receiver is a performer. The amp was the only reason why I bought this unit.It delivers a nice rich sound in any mode.It is not to bright as some other recievers that I have listen to.As far as the A/V part goes it does the job.I guess I am lucky right now. I haven't had any problems.I am going to give it a very high rating on the overall, for the value rating I'll go with the 4 star, it should retail for about $1000 in stores, not $1350. Get it online if you want to save.

Strength:

* Soft and warm CD Sound with a deep slamming bass.
* Remembers speaker settings/modes for different inputs. Don't need a remote for the sub any more :-)
* Logic 7M, sounds great once you get used to it.
* Lots of power to drive a wide range of speakers.
* Learning remote. It is quite handy once you figure out how it works.
* Optical in/out.
* Autodetect input; DD, DTS, PCM and HDCD.
* S-VHS input in front.
* On screen menu.

Weakness:

* Reliability. I am on my second amp now, and it still has some problems. First one had distorsion in left front channel and .....
* Popping sound from surround speakers. It is evident when using Logic 7M mode when the PCM light goes on and off between CD songs. Pop! And when pressing pause during a DVD. Pop! It is not as loud on my second amp as it was on the first one. Pop-pop!
* Shuts down just after powering on. Had this problem on the second one the first day I got it. A power-up reset solved the problem.
* DD/DTS sound is poor. It lack punch and is far from well timed.
* Setting up surround sound delay is difficult. Sony got it righ, H/K got it wrong. Should be enough to select distance in metre, not delay in ms. You have to meassure the distance anyway in order to calculate delay values.
* Connecting the speaker cables is a pain in the ... Well, this apply to almost any amp using the same kind of speaker ternminals. It should just be a hole you stick the cable into and a lever to make it stick.
* Remote has a lot of issues. Trash the batteries included, they will only give you trouble. Programming it is hard and the manual don't do a good enough job describing it. Design is poor, it do not fit well into you hand and the most used buttons are hard to reach by only using one hand. This AVR mode button thing is also an annoyance, at first I thought the remote was bad.
* Miss a low frequency filter to remove the noise made from radio studio microphone tapping. The sub goes wild. Maybe night mode can solve it?
* Miss an escape button to go back one level in the OSD menu.

This is a great amp for playing CD music. It is so detailed and clear that the only thing making the difference now is the quality of the CD recording. Unfortunately it is not as good in DD/DTS. Sony STR-DB series have got that stuff right, but they completely missed out on the CD sound.

The unit is a bit overpriced. Buyers not too picky about getting the CD sound right ought to go for a Sony. It is definitely more value for the buck, and a delight when it comes to home cinema experience.

I still can't make up my mind if i did the right thing buying H/K. The first month with AVR 7000 was terrible. I cursed this black box from Hell, and couldn't stand the sight of it. I had to wait a month before a new one arrived. Still problems, but I can live with it. In my ears CD sound have higher priority than DD/DTS. What other amp in this price range could possibly give me what I want? Guess AVR 7000 was the closest match i could get. Only time will tell if it was close enough.
