Strength:

Features for price; easy to set-up.

Weakness:

center channel distorts easily.

This receiver can be had at very attractive prices, and Given that it includes dts as well as dolby digital, it is hard to beat. Even so, I have to say I had been less than thrilled with the quality of sound coming out of the center channel; i even switched speakers before deciding that a number of the earlier reviews posted here are accurate.

With that said, I have tried the work-around suggested by Shawn, and I have to say that it works very well. My center channel sounds very good now, and dialogue is coming through with a clarity it lacked before adding the resistor ( which costs something like .50).

Thanks, Shawn, my receiver now sounds as good I hoped it would!

Strength:

price and easy to set up

Weakness:

remote

I bought the 6008 off the net after using much better amplifiers for the last 3 years. This one was 1/10 the price and sure the remote is crap but get yourself a commander that can run your whole system and you wont complain.

For the price paid I can hook in my dvd player and get great sound. Mine makes absolutely no distortion when listening through the surround modes and after all for the price you couldnt ask for a better receiver.

radio works great and auto tuning is helpful when your in a new country and dont know the stations.

You get what you pay for and dont worry if you want something to start with this is fine.

Strength:

DTS/Dolby Digital , digital inputs, s-video

Weakness:

center channel is a little weak, when at low volumes

for all the idiots complaining about the hissing, if you throw away those $1.50 set of RCA cables you bought at k-mart, and put down some cash on highend cables all your problems would go away, and you would quit dissing a great reciever

I love this reciever, so much
and would recommend to anyone stepping up to the plate when it comes to DVD/DD/DTS

Strength:

Full DTS/Dolby Digital Support, Coax/Optical Inputs, 100W per channel

Weakness:

Remote could have been engineered a bit better

I purchased the DS-TP230 (RX-6008) home theatre in a box at Circuit City for $299 knowing what I was paying for. I have since hooked this up to a 32" sony wega, with a toshiba sd-2700 dvd player and have been pleased with the results. I would recommend this unit to others with small apartments, as I haven't had any problems and have been satisfied with it's dynamic range.

HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Last month I finally decided to give away my 6 years - old Sony Mini Hifi Component System and to get a "real" Hi Fi System. I initially was tempted to buy some Yamaha stuff, but finally fell in love with the champagne - coloured JVC RX6001R (the european version of the 6000V). Together with a DVD Player of the same look, I thought, I'd done a good buy. But only two days later, the problems started. I noticed significant hiss at every volume level, no matter what source i chose. It was really disturbing during silent passages of music or while listening to speech in the radio. And finally, the left front channel said goodbye and from now on needed some time to warm up the amplifier before reappearing after switching the Receiver on after a longer time of standby. I soon returned the unit, and replaced it with a 884 ... but I'm still not satisfied ... that crappy thing gets too hot!!! I think I'm finally going to get myself a 8012 ... if there'S one big truth in life, then the following: you can't have everything unless you pay much more than you expected ... well ... damn....

The 6000V might be a good choice for everyone who wants to get DD / DTS / MPEG and a quite okay sound for few bucks. But the high end section starts elsewhere ... I didn't want to believe, now I know. I'm using the Quadral Surround 181, and the sound isn't that bad...but if you ever listened to some quiet music at night with your headphones you would have kicked that receiver's ass for making that kind off noise ...
In the end it's not a bad device .... but you can do much better .. and remember...the amplifier really makes the difference .... so get a 7000R or, better .. the 8010 / 8012 ... which features a USB connector to get your PC's music digitally to your home stereo system .... amazing!

Strength:

Power, features, sound quality, remote(!)

Weakness:

# of s-inputs,no backlit remote

I've been rather happy with this. (6008 actually)
I recently went to circuit city & the Onkyos seem to make the jvc (8000 which is already supposed to be better than this)sound like little wind up radios, but when there's nothing to compare it to I can't complain...

Anyway the Onkyos are nowhere in my price range.

I am considering an upgrade if the 8000 or something better or more convenient comes along at a bargain price & I happen to have the money.
I've had some pretty nice sounding stuff in the Yammies & H/K (tho' not as full featured, I miss the quality & 'snob-appeal'.(!)

I have it hooked up to an all-BIC quintet of DV 736 Towers, 62CLR (of course)as center & 62si for surrounds, the latter about 17" off of the ground, which is a bit low but well, what can I do?(w/out money)

The center is about a foot behind the towers due to spacial problems also, but seems to be ok.

I had a teeny JBL center before this that wasn't even rated for 100w that sounded tinny & after reading these message boards I thought it would stay that way after the upgrade(first to a 5 yr old 52plus that came 'bunged up' supposedly n transit from an ebay seller for almost what he paid for it then almost immediately to the 62CLR which I got brand new for only $50.00 more...)
but happily it sounds fine(!)

I do have the center turned way up most times but the surrounds I have to turn DOWN almost all the way when there are people around or I'm right next to the speaker or -well let's put it this way: I used to be a musician & the pressure in the Matrix soundtrack(among others)makes me fear for my hearing!(& complaints)

Luckily there are concrete walls in my unit...

I do have to crank it up quite a bit sometimes for tv audio, but that in itself doesn't bother me.

What does bother me is when I or someone doesn't notice that it's turned up & switches to radio or
something & blasts me.(however I'm reminded by reading here that it does have a one touch function that used to plague me, incidentally for a few weeeks by automatically cranking it up to 70 all by itself before I learned how to disable that function)

Now I see it would help w/this situation as I could(theoretically)set it to crank up higher when in tv audio mode & lower when elsewhere.

I'm stopping here as my feeble webtv unit has not once succeded in sending out one of these reviews here or at mtbreview & I'm probably about to see all of my careful, thoughtful(LOL!)work destroyed
I might as well...

I don't listen to a lot of music (oddly?) & don't use 'soundfields'(dsp)-in fact for the most part I just listen to the radio which, as some(including Consumer Reports Mag.)have offered could be improved.(it's dropping in & out of a farther-away station as I write this)

But for the most part(for $124.00 delivered?!)I'm quite satisfied...(it was a refurb, I believe)

I have to cable swap to see my dvd player as I tried a switcher but found webtvs wireless keyboard was making it switch at odd times & so I took it back.

But that's my only real problem w/the amp.

Sound is big, full & rich: more than adequate for my 'modest' inner city abode.

Yay JVC!!!

God Bless America & Japan!(&/or Korea or wherever the heck they made it)

BTW: don't know exact model year I can't find it but AR's system required me to fill in that field

Strength:

Great DTS receiver for the price.
Power isn't an issue, it's plenty loud for me.

Weakness:

Lacking in some features, understandable as it is an entry-level receiver.
DSP for stereo material sounds terrible.

Ok... I can't complain too much. I got one hell of a deal on this little thing. I bought it mostly for the DTS and Dolby Digital decoders. Those work beautifully! I have no complaints about the center channel, it sounds fine to me. The thing I find most lacking is that most of the settings on the surround DSP for stereo material (namely, CDs) sounds like crap. "3D Action" mode actually works quite well for music recordings. Theatre mode for music is acceptable if you must have all your speakers working for CD playback. It just takes a little getting used to, as there is significant dropout of power from the mains when this mode is selected.
It's a great starter receiver for those new to the home theatre market.

Sounds awesome. I don't know what this last reviewers problem was, jack@ss shouldn't have bought it on eBay. Everything works perfectly. Loud as h*ll. Makes everything sound great, even sh*tty mp3s from my computer over a mini plug. Very pleased.

Strength:

-JVC electronics are incredibly relible
-Easy to set up
-S video input/output for under $250

Weakness:

-The remote is small, cluttered, and has very limited use. You can't do much less than turn the reciver on and off, and switch between the different functions (CD, DVD, etc.)
-The various tone adjustments are hard and long to get to, and can't be programmed from the remote
-The reciever pushes out way too much bass, and tends to overdo the extreme low range on action
-The DSP soundfields are terrible
-The radio reception is awful
-Despite having 100x5 power, it's power output is terrible.

This is reciver sucks.

All BS aside, plan out, this reciever is a piece of what comes out of dogs when they "sit" on your front lawn. It is evil. For your own sake, don't buy it and even look away from it when you are shopping.

I bought this POS on sale at Cicuit City, mainly becuase i wanted DTS decoding and not spend a lot of money. I was 15 at the time. So, i bougtht this "thing" for about $245, thinking that it was teh speakers that make teh sound, and not teh electronics. While that may be true in terms of sound quality, it isn't in terms of power and erganomics.

There are so many things wrong with this reciever that it would take me hours to list all of them. I will say this though: i ama type of person who thinks long and hard before i buy anything over $50. I did the same with this, and only knowning that JVC made very relible products, i went with it. That and it had a S-video input/output. I should have thought more and bought something else, with a little more quality.

When i first began using this, i was annoyed with the power and the bass, but it didn't really bother me until about 2 months ago when my father bought a Kenwood VR-410 for the den. After listening to that reciever (by the way, the VR-410 is a great reciever), i fully realized the crappiness of my "reciver."

I work this thing of of what could be considered a budget-audiophile speaker set up, in a small bedroom. Any reciver can push out good power with such a small area to cover, except for this one. It also overdoes the bass incredibly. I find the bass overpowering the other elements of music/movies even when i have the boost and the bass all the way down. I don't even run a damn powered sub and it does this! DO NOT BUY IT! Don't make the same mistake i did.

I plan on upgrading very soon.

Strength:

None. Looks nice, maybe.

Weakness:

Everything.

Pile of trash. The surround sound works sometimes, and doesn't work at other times. A lot of hiss when you turn it up. Power rating seems innacurate. Doesn't produce low frequencies. Couldn't handle my powered woofer. Runs VERY VERY hot. When you turn the volume up and down, you can hear a clicking noise in the speakers. Disappointed in every way (which is too bad because I had heard good things about JVC). Will not purchase another JVC receiver ever (nor CD player).

No matter what you'll pay--don't buy this product.
