Strength:

Price, features. DTS & Dolby 5.1 decoding. Digital Optical and coax inputs.

Weakness:

No switched aux. a/c plug. No knobs for bass/treble adj. Remote is basic. Only 1 optical input

For the price I can't complain. It has all the features I would ever need for my home theater. I have it hooked up to a pair of JBL HLS 820s and HLS Center and Polk surround speakers. Sounds great! My next purchase will be a subwoofer. If you are looking for a good basic receiver with DTS and Dolby, you can't go wrong with this model!

Weakness:

Inexpensive, includes DTS decoding, assignable co-axial and optical inputs, good starter receiver

This receiver is an excellent selection for someone looking to put together a starter home theater. It doesn't have very high quality sound or any fancy features, but it does everything a person who currently doesn't have a surround system needs - Things like built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 decoding and a subwoofer line-level out. It has two digital audio inputs; one optical and one co-axial. These are assignable so you don't have to worry if a device has only an optical or a co-axial output. The unit will also do video switching and has composite and s-video inputs and outputs (but you can't go from s-video in to composite out). Also, it has plently of power for any starter system: 100 Watts (peak) X 5 channels.
The biggest beef I have with this unit is that it's kind of noisy. If I put my ear near one of the tweeters and turn the volume from "0" to "1", I get a distinct "ffffff" hiss noise. I guess I can't expect audiophile quality from a receiver this inexpensive.. = Also, at least one power outlet on the back of the unit would have been nice. Again, I guess JVC was trying to keep the cost down. The only other thing I find worth mentioning is the fact that it's not the nicest-looking rig (the el-cheapo display, plain knobs, etc). It *is* cheap, so it looks cheap. This isn't very important to some, but important enough to me to mention it. The Technics amp in the same class (the SADX-940) is a much snazzier-looking receiver. Too bad it's a piece of crap. =<|>Less than 1 month

Strength:

Price; Apparent features; compu-link to other JVC components; # of features controlled by remote.

Weakness:

Surround Sound absolutely stinks

Plain stereo is good. Surround sound with videos, cd's or any other input is horrific. Surround sound is the only way to make use of rear speakers. Surround sounds like it is coming out of a can and sound is distorted - center channel is garbled, rear speakers go in and out making surround unusuable. I thought I had a defective unit. Subwoofer always works - even if trying to use 2nd set of output speakers in another room. Don't touch it. I plan to try exchanging it after suffering with it for 2 months.

price DTS

Weakness:

haven't found any yet

I am new to the surrond sound experience. I wanted a reciever with DTS. After months of studing up on recievers. I choose this one, Mainly because of the price and the DTS. I live in a apartment so i didn't want something to loud. So it was never an issue with me.

This reciever sounds clean. I use it mainly for watching dvd movies. The DTS sounds awsome. The features are there but not necessory.(3d action does sound cool on Saving private ryan though.)

This reciever does what i need it to do nicely. I am pleased and would recommend this model to anyone with about 200.00 to spend on a reciever.

Strength:

Price, aesthetics, power rating, Dolby Digital, DTS, assignable digital outs.

Weakness:

Should have a universal remote included, frequency range selector for speakers A and B would be very nice but usually isn't found on something so inexpensive. A slightly more adjustable equalizer would be good too, instead of just having bass and treble adjustable. Allow the user to adjust the seperate frequency ranges if you have a display for it, JVC.

All in all this receiver is a good buy. It's a little lacking in the bass reproduction, even with bass boost enabled. Then again, that's what a subwoofer is for and thankfully this receiver has output for a powered sub.

The problem other people have encountered with hiss coming out of the speakers is not a big deal. Simply use Monster Speaker cables and route away from sources of high EM radiation. The hiss will diminish or disappear entirely.

This receiver certainly has the power it claims to have (100 watts x 5 channels) and sounds great in all sound modes. I rarely have to increase the volume past 30. Of course, other people's tastes may vary and they may like their movies and music played louder.

The 6000V is a great receiver for those on a budget or for those just starting to look for home theater receivers.
