Strength:

Fully loaded receiver with plenty of power. Has both DD and DTS and decodes both signals perfectly. If you have all JVC componenets then receiver's remote can control all of them.

Weakness:

Second VCR can be connected only to composite input(all other video inputs have both connectors - S-video and composite).

If you need receiver for HT then go for JVC because for $349 you can't get better unit. I have it for 6 months already and think that I made a right decision when I bought it.

Strength:

Dolby AND DTS, lots of inputs, analog and digital DVD

Weakness:

Some hiss at REALLY loud volums, on quiet DVD dialog passages.

Good product. Nice bass management features. Will accept DTS from CD or DVD (despite the documentation). If it is not loud enough for you, get more efficent speakers! Plenty loud form me.

Strength:

-Crystal clear sound, very little BGN while in digital mode
-Amazing power
-Surprising sound quality

Weakness:

No dimmer for the display
Remote is hard to use, and is only programmable for TV and VCR
The remote is only completely functional if all of your equip is JVC

This is a great receiver; I got it from UBid for 300 shipped. It was refurbished, and so it does not exhibit any of the negative characteristics other reviewers have said. There is a hum at volume level of 90, but when you are playing a source at that level, your ears will bleed before you ear the hum. I give this receiver 5 stars because of the amazing sound quality at this price. Value is outstanding.

Strength:

Lots of Features

Weakness:

Sound Quality/Power

This is a very good receiver, especially when you consider what you'll pay for it. But if you can afford a couple hundred more, get the Onkyo.... i've done a direct comparison, had both, and the Onkyo definitely had superior sound, especially at higher volumes. The JVC wasn't quite as "clean". However I have to say the JVC is still and awesome product, I would have been very happy with it had I kept it, but the lure of the Onkyo was worth the extra $$$$.

Strength:

Great Value, Digital and Optical Inputs

Weakness:

Volume Control on remote is touchy, need different color lights on receiver to tell difference between DTS and AC-3

Just played Saving Private Ryan DTS version and the experience was awesome. I thoroughly enjoy this receiver. Lots of features for the buck.

Strength:

Very good features for the price- DD/DTS, 500watt, Virtual Surround modes, DAP modes, on screen visuals, and very clean power delivered to all speakers.

Weakness:

Could use a backlit remote, but other thn that my 888vbk receiver has performed flawlessly.

I just wanted to gloat that I picked up this receiver from UBID for $249 including shipping- a price I have never seen this unit at since then...it usually goes for $3-400. This is definitely the BEST money I have ever spent in my life!

After reading reviews on this receiver, I decided to give it a try about 5 months ago. I do not experience any humming or buzzing at high volumes as stated in other reviews. I drive my front Cerwin Vega LS15's with no problem, and I'll tell you that if you have the 888vbk cranked up past 80, then your neighbors will be complaining and your house will be shaken apart!

I especially like the SEA equalizer and different modes you can put this thing in. It also allows control for the center, and rear channel volumes.

I love the S-Video inputs on the back- there are 4! Plus 2 digital optical inputs, and a slew of other RCA inputs that most people will not need to use.

Overall a great price for a great unit. If you can pick one up for around $2-350, do it.

Strength:

Good power, a lot of inputs/outputs(including SVHS), flexibility

Weakness:

RCA to S-VHS I/O

Very good receiver if you are on a budget. Compulink connection is excellent(Text Compulink is even better).
Has more than enough power(unless you are nuts).
5 Audio-Video inputs(including 4 SVHS, 5th is only RCA to be used with second VCR???). Remote is good and controls all JVC components(no backlighting).
Overall I think it's a great unit for the price($329).

Strength:

Average sound for money. DTS, Dolby digital, optical inputs. Very nice stero sound with low distortion in digital mode

Weakness:

No front speaker adjustment and surround mode lacks reguarding rear speaker sound volume and quality.

Appears happiness is not found in recievers after looking at a few dozen reviews. The reciever JVC's 888, I thought, did well untill rear speakers were added (Boston Acoustic's Micro surrounds). The problem forms from the very low response and volume the reciever pumps to the rear speakers. The problem was fixed silightly by incorperating larger speakers in the rear. However, the quality of the surround mode fails so miserably I am considering dropping the JVC line for Harmon Kardon's or an Onkyo. If you are looking to buy a good all around OK system then the JVC works fine. If you are looking for a good dolby surround system search elsewhere.

Strength:

Sounds awesome, clear, crisp, dynamic sound

Weakness:

None so far, little confusing setting up

I have come to this site and read the reviews for this receiver for the past 2 months, before deciding to buy it. And this is the best purchase I have made in a long time. This receiver is awesome!! If your like me I was a little weary since I read quite a few of the negetive reviews, but trust me it sounds awesome. Those few people who disliked this receiver must have had their head up their a**!! The only hissing noise I heard is when I cranked the volume almost to max, but noone in their rite mind would listen that loud anyway. And that was only when their was no source selected.
Trust me this is one kicken receiver, I did add Monster Cable's HTS1000 line conditioner, and wow what a difference!
But for the money you cant go wrong with this receiver, and it has endless options too. I got mine at ecost.com for $351 shipped. Not too bad. Dont listen to these other idiots who say it sucks, its grrrrrrrrreat!!
