Purchased this to replace a beloved JVC-703 which I had working on a daily basis for exactly 10 years with no problems. Needed the theatre setup, which the 703 couldn't do. I like the receiver, even though it has a higher THD and lower Signal to Noise than my old 703, and the FM receiver isn't as good as the equipment in the 703.

I am having one problem with mine that you folks may be able to help out with. I don't know if I have something hooked up wrong or my receiver is not working properly...

I have the receiver hooked up to Infinity RF-5's up front, Advents in rear, and an Infinity BU-120 powered sub hooked up to the sub-out plug on the 888. I have an optical digital input from a Panasonic DVD. When I play a DVD, the light on the 888 display lights up Dolby Digital or DTS, whatever. However, when I have the "DSP" surround mode on to "Dolby Digital", or any other setting, I get sound out of my front and rear, but nothing from the sub. When the Surround mode is turned OFF, then the sub works, but not the rears. So, no matter what I do, whether listening to a CD or watching a DVD, the rear speakers and sub are NEVER on at the same time. What am I doing wrong?

Very good 5.1 performance at a reasonable price

I previously reviewed this receiver and gave it a 5 for value and 3 overall. The performance of this receiver in the critical 5.1 mode was very good, but I was also experiencing quite a bit of hiss in the center channel. It was this hiss that caused me to give only a 3 overall rating for this receiver. Another reviewer mentioned that they were'nt getting any hiss and suggested that people who were should get "a real" center speaker. I did not think that the hiss I was getting had anything to do with the speaker itself, though I must admit it was a fairly cheap model, but recently I decided it might be time to shop for a new center channel speaker. Still being on a budget, I was shopping for a speaker in the 100-200 dollar range. The ones I found that fit that description at the local Circuit City included the Polk CS175 and CS245 at 129 and 169 respectively and the Infinity CC1. I wanted to get the Polk CS245 but they were out of stock so I decided to give the Infinity a try. After trying the Infinity for two weeks, one thing I can say about it is there was almost zero hiss. In this regard I give the Infinity high marks, but I found the sound to have a kind of hollow quality to it and decided to return it. I again wanted to try the Polk CS245 but they were still out of stock. They did have an open box CS175 for 99 dollars and I decided to give it a try. It is very similar to the CS245, but only has one 5.25 woofer, a 3/4 in dome tweeter and a front port where the second woofer normally would be. Again, this speaker exibits hardly any hiss when combined with the 888 receiver. I now am upgrading my previous rating of this receiver. For any of you experiencing hiss trouble, you might want to try out different speakers. The Polk CS175 is an absolute steal at 99.00. Even though it only has one woofer, it is plenty loud and has excellent clarity on dialog along with good bass for an inexpensive center speaker. It is a bit inefficient at 89db, but the JVC is flexible enough to compensate with individual volume adjustments.

I just recently purchased this reciever. Feb 17 to be exact. I was thinking of getting another Technics with built in Dolby Digital or the JVC-778VBK (which a friend swears by), but the salesman convinced me to go to the 888VBK with a bit of a deal. It was well worth the few extra dollars. I just also got a DVD player with optical output and thought it was time to upgrade the receiver to take advantage of the optical output from the DVD. All I can say is what a differance! First movie I watched was "The Matrix" ,which I have had for a bit. It was fantastic in 5.1 surround. Also "Apocalypse Now" and "The Thin Red Line" did not dissapoint. I found the seperation of the channels, especially the center and front to be better than the Technics. Just playing CDs seems to have a lot better punch.

As far as the reports of Hiss and noise, I haven't found any that is objectionable. I had "The Matrix" (Chapter 29-check it out) playing at around 76 with no noticeable noise. That is a loud part. But when the movie reverted back to just speaking, i listened for noise and again noticed no more than that of the Technics.

All in all this is a fine receiver and worth taking a listen if your in the market for a reasonably priced Dolby Digital reciever that performs well in regular audio too. (I got mine at a local retailer for $499 canadian)

I've had my JVC-888 for a couple of weeks now and I like it very much. I've had absolutely no problems and it sounds great whether I'm playing DVD's, just the TV, or CD's. I agree that the FM tuner is not very strong, but part of my problem is living in a big, heavy condo building. I've certainly not had to turn the volume up much past 50 for it to be perfectly loud. When I first turned it on I noticed it was on mute which certainly made a big difference, but once I turned the mute off it was fantastic. I got mine for $336 from eCost.com and it was delivered by UPS within 3 days.

I got mine 2 weeks ago for about $350 mail-order. I'm quite pleased with it. It's a great value, and a no-brainer if you have other JVC equipment.
It has 4 S-video in and 2 out. For some reason the 5th video source (VCR2) doesn't have s-video. Strange. It has 2 optical and 1 coax digital in. The remote is not back-lit. Bummer.

The manual is not so great. There's no picture of the entire back, just the individual areas. This makes it harder to feel your way around the back. The speaker terminals demand banana plugs, but the manual tells you to stick in bare wires from the side!

Still, for the price, it's an easy 5.

Got this on 5/15/99 @ $499 and well worth every cent I paid I had the Pioneer V608 and was very disapointed @ the lack of bass and treble control in every surround mode but this JVC has a EQ U can change and has 4 presets the DSP modes r way kewl dts is awesome and Dolby Digital is also would recomend this reciever 2 any 1 Also has 6 S-Videos inputs on screen menus U can label your favorite radio stations

I have monster cables that still allow the static to come through. I recently saw that
JVC is telling customers not to use the digital in (DBS) for DVD purposes. Has anyone else had this problem? I am not sure where else to turn. I changed the setting to reflect the dvd using the digital in 1 slot. I would appreciate any help.
