Strength:

a lot of inputs and power.

Weakness:

none that I have encountered

Hello, I bought this receiver like a year ago or something. I must say I am amazed. I have 4 floor standing speakers hooked up to it. It kicks ass in my opinion. It can go really loud. I would reccommend it

Strength:

Great Audio, LOTS of connections.

Weakness:

Quality Control

Received this via FedEX on a Friday. Spent a good afternoon setting it up. Yes, DO read the manual; set up is challenging but not overwhelming. Got it up and running and was (almost) very satisfied with design and operation. Sound on "Gladiator" via video tape was very impressive. It took me a while to learn to navigate the design of this receiver, but when I did I was very happy with all of the options available.

Like I said, I was very satisfied with the JVC 9000 EXCEPT for one thing. Neither the composite or SVHS TV/DBS video input jacks would work. (and I think this fact helped make the set up a challenge to me--it took me a while to figure out that the machine had a problem, and not my set up technique!) Every other thing on this receiver worked fine. On Monday, I called the folks I purchased the receiver from, Proactive Electronics. These folks are very nice, (and apologetic) and were quite helpful. They have FedEx coming on Tuesday to pick this defective unit up, and they are in the process of shipping me a new, and I hope, completely functional unit.

Based on a relatively short 3-day tryout, I am very pleased with the value of this receiver. Hopefully, the quality control issue won't be a factor on the replacement unit being shipped to me--and I really want (need?) to have it up and running for the holidays!

Strength:

Price, Multi-room, compulink with other JVC products, Breeze to set up and use.

Weakness:

"not audiophile brand"

Really wanted to go with one of the "audiophile brands" but all my other components (TV,DVD,VCR, and CD) are JVC. Excellent sound on both movies and music. DTS version of Men in Black is more than I could have ever hoped for. Easy to use and set up (everything is so logical). Maybe my ears are bad, Maybe my setup is perfect, Maybe their isn't that much difference between these models except price. Would recomend this receiver to everyone.

Strength:

RF remote, price, sound quality, CompuLink system, dual room capability

Weakness:

overloads easily, not real good FM reception

I waited to write a review until I had a little experiance with my receiver. So far I have had it about 5 months. I bought my entire system at one time. It consists of:
CD player: JVC xl-fz258
DVD player: JVC xv 523
Main speakers: MTX AAL15
Sub room speakers: MTX AAL212
Rear speakers: JBL N26
Center speaker: JBL N Center
Subwoofers: AR S500
AR S112PS

Compared to the other receivers I had tested when I was looking to buy, it is by far the best.
My experiance with setting this up, from in the box to watching a DVD, it took me about 30 minutes. The on screen TV display of the JVC made set up a breeze.
The Pioneer and Kenwood were similar to the JVC in a lot of respects, at low volumes they were even hard to tell apart. The difference started when playing a DVD or listening to music at high levels or with a lot of bass.
The Kenwood or Pioneer just did not have the power to push my big speakers at levels of bass that I like to listen to.
When tested with a DVD, the JVC clearly had an advantage. With the high current amplifier of the JVC, at no level I listen can I distort any of my speakers when I watch a movie. After watching just one, I decided there was no need for a VCR.
Another really nice feature is that all JVC components can be run through the receiver with the remote that comes with it using the ComupLink system. Including a JVC TV, DVD player, MD, CD, or VCR. When I put a DVD in my player, it sets up my receiver to DVD mode with surround sound on and the settings I want. It also sets up my TV. The only thing I have to do is adjust volume.
The downside to this receiver, at high volumes the thing overloads when using four main speakers. Running only one set of speakers it is capable pushing my MTXs thunderous levels before distorting. If any of you need to run four speakers at high volume or high bass, this definately is not the stereo for you. That is one of the reasons I bought both subs, I turn the bass all the way down and rely on my subs for the low sounds when I really want some music.
Also, compared to any brand of stereo I have heard, my JVC has poor FM reception, I had to buy a powered antenna in order to get stations to sound clear that are no problem for even my clock radio.
For the price, I could not find anything close, the RF remote itself is worth the extra money. My overall score is a 3.5, my value rating is 5. My advice, pay a little more for the 9000 if you are debating against any other JVC receiver.

one-touch autoselection, bang for the buck, RF multi-room, multi-source...

Weakness:

Super Complex and Time-Consuming Setup of Death!

My premier reasons for buying this was multi-source/room and Dolby Dig. + DTS, oh, and I didn't want to spend $1.5-2K to do it. I've been using it for about a week now and finally feel like I can run the thing. I had read many of the reviews on lower/older models and read some pretty scary stuff about noise levels and defective merchandise, but decided to risk it to get the low price point ($478 From A Plus Digital, NYC.) I'm happy to say my unit works as advertised and I'm pleased with it, but it took me a bit to get there! Allow me to elaborate:

The "out-of-the-box" experience on the unit is not so hot... Configuration was more complex than anything I have ever encountered in a consumer level audio product! It literally took me two hours to finally get the optical inputs assigned right and get the subwoofer running. Then another hour to figure out the sub-room feature. The machine has some strange defaults that include a disabled subwoofer, and the second room speakers set to "MAIN ROOM" just to name a few! There was more than once that I thought I had a defective product, but that after some research and tweaking it all just ended up being configuration. I wonder how many of the complaints in previous reviews were caused by just not finding the correct obscure control. The one star I knocked off is PURELY because of the difficult initial setup. OUCH! I think they just overloaded this thing with too many "features" -- makes me feel like I'm running MS Windows :)

However, once I fingured out pleasing (or at lest functional) configuration(s) and enabled the one-touch system that memorizes settings depending on the input selection, it has become very simple and effective to use. Whew!

As far as sound quality goes, I have few complaints, although it does seem a bit "harsher" than my 10 year old flagship Yamaha and the S/N ratio is nowhere near what I had (this is expected, I shouldn't even be comparing that kind of quality amp to the JVC Super A) but I don't mind that as much because I'm more into home-theater now than the pure music environment. I LOVE RF and Multi-Room!

Again, with this reciever, its important to remember that this thing sells for 2-4 times less than many other models of similar equip. It's hard to belive I paid $1200.00 over ten years ago for my last receiver, equipped with only the original 4 channel Dolby Surround. ('Course you didn't NEED a manual in those days!)

Outside of configuration, it's everyting I was expecting, and thanks to a degree in Engineering, maybe I'll be able to run it! :) If you don't mind menus, knobs, and buttons, this is a great unit.

As for some of the complaints about other JVC machines:

1) Volume control: Many people complain about having to turn the volume "WAY UP" to get respectable sound levels and compare to other brands. Bunk. Get Real. Volume NUMBERS (unless on a db scale) are completely arbitrary from mfr. to mfr. and it can show a serious lack of knowledge to say "My Kenwood is twice as loud at '40' than your Sony is at '50'!" In fact, JVC has implemented a finer scale of volume control than most so while it seems to some to take "a lot of numbers" to get it "loud", it means to me that I can more finely adjust my system's level.

2) Bright Display: Uh Huh! I agree, they really need to provide a dimmer... (Maybe I just havent found the right button yet? Or maybe just Sunglasses at Night!)

3) Hiss/Hum: I can produce audible hiss only by increasing volume on a "paused" signal past any and all reasonable levels, so that is a big non-issue for me.

Anyway, I like it so I'll keep it -- now that I'm trained!

Strength:

It works great! powerful , great sound , multi room - multi source - multi amp is fantastic if you can make use of it.

Weakness:

for me set up was a little complicated , radio wave remote won't operate -quality control

Great Unit once I got it all fired up.A few minor snags getting the dts to work.Totally smoking sound, the dts tracks on Gladiator were out of this world ! I had no problems with hiss, pops or hum, which I expected after reading some of the reviews on this forum. My problem is the remote is weak, works sporadically and won't work in RF at all. Jvc sent me a new one but NG it must be the unit. So now I have choice of returning it to UBID or sending it to JVC. PLEASE write if anyone has some advice.

Strength:

Great quality and performance for price. Great features and flexibility. Awesome integration with other JVC components. One touch setup. On-screen display and menus. S-video switching.

Weakness:

Weak FM Tuner

Thanks to the helpful reviews here on this unit and the RX-8000V, I found setup a breeze. My old Sony TA-E1000esd was MUCH more of a pain to set up. I was up and listening to Rush 2112 in less than 30 minutes. The sound is exceptional for the price.

Setup of all my JVC components is easy and intuitive. I especially appreciate the on-screen display, automatic setup by selecting source (i.e. dolby digital for dvd, stereo for cd's, etc.)and of course, the Compu Link.

The footprint of this receiver is about the same as a carousel CD. I had to cut out the back of my entertainment center to slide the unit back enough that the doors would close.

The FM tuner is weak. Some of the same stations that came in strong with the old Sony 915 are weak with the JVC using the same antenna. I'm sure improving the antenna will fix this.

When playing DVD's the dolby digital 5.1 is outstanding.

Compared to the Pioneer, Sony, HK & Kenwood receivers I evaluated at this price point, there was no competition, the JVC was the obvious winner.
