Strength:

Awesome clean sound even at loud volumes. Remote is deadly and very user friendly. Lots of inputs for all your components.

Weakness:

None, except it would of been nice if the remote had a backlight.

I have been using the SR7200 for about a year now and I'll say it has been by far the best I have ever had or used. My old SR7000 was very good but sadly it was stolen, I went out to replace it and came across the Denon 3802, which was not a bad unit but was lacking in the sound quality that my old SR7000 had. I needed better so I set out to get the SR7000 but the model had been dis-continued and replaced with the SR72000. It was a little more expensive then the SR7000 but well worth it. I have had nothing but great listening experiences with this piece of equipment. I have heard similar receivers but none have come even close to what this baby can do.

Strength:

- Excellent Sound - Solid built quality - Remote is excellent

Weakness:

- None

This is my first AVReceiver and I bought it after months and months of research (from internet reviews to listening to 'em all). Whilst at first I was sceptical about the build quality, especially as many reviewers had complained about it; however after listening to it and also after discussing it with many people I was convinced that all problems are gone... I bought it in 2002, and have no problems since then. The sound is excellent, I have the following setup: - Marantz 7200 Amp - Marants 4200 DVD-player - KEF Q1 fronts/rears and CC100 center - Velodyne Sub. The system rocks ! In the begining I was tossing between Marantz and Denon 3802, in the end, it was the sound and ergonomics of Marantz that sold it to me.... Denon was too bright for me, and the controls looked way too complicated, the remote was awful... Marantz just looked better and sounded even better, with an excellent remote....

Strength:

Musical Powerful enough Easy to set up Remote control capability

Weakness:

popping sound when turn on on the speaker.

I've tried some AV amplifier : Denon 3802, Onkyo 700E and Marantz 7200 on my Cabasse. My ear tells me Marantz is the best in term of sound quality : non agressive, good bass and clarity. Both for stereo and home video. Very good Price/Quality ratio.

Strength:

Sound quality, excellent highs, mids and base. Tremendous clarity in reproduction. Very clean look, extremely easy to use and configure. Premium product.

Weakness:

Only thing I can think of is no Phono input, but I don't care because when I want to connect a turntable, I can always buy an adaptor for $35 bucks

I just bought my SR7200 at CSW, Boston. Amazing sound and video quality. Very easy to use, set mine up in 1 hour including cabling. Remote is awesome. This baby rocks.

Strength:

PLII, Circle surround but first and foremost source direct. Excellent sound, good remote, reasonable price for something at this level of quality.

Weakness:

I'm just nitpicking, none of these really are serious enough to consider not buying this receiver : User manual not clear and precise enough. Only choice between low bass from sub or fronts, not both.

I have finally gone ahead and replaced my Yamaha RX495 receiver with the Marantz SR7200. And what a relevation it was, sounds like a veil has been lifted from my system. Originally I was planning to get the Denon 3802, but after doing some A/B comparing, the Marantz sounded much better and that for a lower price. Excellent receiver, plenty of connections, good power, awsome sound. I have been hearing details in my recordings that I didn't know were there. Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Andrea Bocelli all sound like they're right in my living room. As many people have commented, the manual could have been much, much better. It took me quite some time to figure everything out and get the best possible set-up. The remote control is excellent, for this price level receiver you can't get any better. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that there is no setting that allows deep bass to come from both fronts and subwoofer. At first, when I was listening to 2 channel stereo. I found there was lack of bass. Nothing in the manual... Only by experimenting did I found that if I set subwoofer off in speaker setting, the bass would come through the fronts. Also, the fact that I had to turn the volume way up in the beginning bothered me a bit, but you get used to it. This received still has plenty of power, it's just that the volume know is configured to let it come out in the higher levels, while most other receivers and amps have bigger increases in the beginning. Actually, I like the Marantz way better. In the lower volume levels, you need more control and more precise setting. With most other receivers, one notch up could mean that volume is already too high. PLII is nice and so is Circle surround, although in my opinion it only sounds good on some recordings, others definitely sound more focused in 2 channel stereo. And source direct is absolutely wonderful, this is definitely as near as you can come to high-end sound at this price level.

Strength:

SOUND OPTIONS Very sufficient power (those that say it's not loud enough need to turn their hearing aids up - it plays extremely loud, with NO distortion!) Remote Control (with LCD - very nice)

Weakness:

owner's manual is brutal, but will get the job done. That's it - I love it.

Beautiful receiver. All problems reported have been fixed and I can attest to that. I bought the 7200 two weeks ago and am thrilled with it. The sound is amazingly warm and rich. The features are great and the remote that everyone complains about is actually quite good. I previously had a HK 510 and was disgusted with it. The sound was fair, but I went through 3 units that all broke down. HK customer service was brutal. Mike Christian, the CS manager accused me of lying about the problems, even though I sent them in or brought them to a repair shop! But back to Marantz. OSD is easy and intuitive. 6th channel is great. CS 5.1 sounds much better than PLII. A and B switching is nice to have, as well.

Strength:

Great sound!!!!!!!!! 192/24-bit capable. 7 channel input. Multi-room feature.

Weakness:

Can't use sub in source direct mode. Need TV to modify some settings.

I used to own a Pioneer D510-G receiver and I decided to upgrade to a Denon 2802 because the Pioneer didn't sound nice with music. It was loud, but it wasn't detailed and clean. I went to the store to get the Denon 2802 but since there was a Marantz SR7200 lying on the floor, newly delivered, I asked if I could demo the unit. I was amazed with the musicality of the 7200. Music was just more alive as compared to the Denon 2802 which was priced the same. It's the Source Direct feature that makes it sound great. If you turn off Source Direct mode, it sounds very good, but not great. Since the 7200 had more features than the Denon 2802 and also sounded better when playing music, I decided to get the 7200 instead. However, the 7200 sounded better with music like classical, jazz, acoustic, new wave, vocals, etc. But the Denon sounded better for rock and heavy metal. The 7200 remote is also very, very easy to use. My wife and kids can easily access and use all our equipment with that single remote. The buttons glow in the dark, but the LCD screen is not backlit. I wonder why? The macro feature of the remote is great since I can turn on the TV, DVD, Amp in one press of the button. If you plan to get the 7200, and if you listen to a lot of music, I suggest front speakers that are capable of handling < 40Hz because in Source Direct mode, the sub is not used. The idea in SD mode is it bypasses all types of tone controls and bass management to give you a signal that is closest to the recording... pure, clean. The on screen display (OSD) is also very easy to use. But is only in black and white. I would have preferred a blue background. The manual is very easy to understand, but for those who want details, you'll be disappointed. I guess it was written for beginners. Even after reading the entire manual, I was still craving for info. Like "Why should I care if this is capable of 192/24-bit encoding?", or "What can I do to have my subwoofer activate during Source Direct mode?". Also, coming from the Pioneer, I got surprised that you need to turn the volume knob more to increase the volume. A lot would think that the 7200 is underpowered because of this, but it's not. They say "in my Denon, I only turn the volume know 20% to the right and it's too loud already." Imagine a baby accidentally turning the knob by 50%. Kaboom! Not in the 7200.

i dont actually own the sr7200, but i was talking to the owner of the local hi-fi shop about the problems i had read about for this receiver, and he informed me of the following. i forget exactly what the problem was, but there were a huge amount of receivers that came out of the factory with some sort of defect, causing the popping noise and the many other problems people experienced. however, if you contact/contacted marantz after the incident, they were more than willing to replace the defective unit or part, and recently there have been no problems with the unit, jsut many satisfied customers. so although marantz had its quality control problems before, it is all sorted out now, and having heard the receiver and owning a sr4200, i would defiantely reccommend the purchase if you ahve the money, it's a great receiver.

Could not get it to work to find any strengths.

Weakness:

Supposedly factory refurbished unit that was dead on arrival.

Defective right out of the box!! This was supposedly a factory fully refurbished unit. Minor miracle the "pop"/shotgun blast it emitted didn't blow up my speakers or my ears. Many functions not working. Its going back!!!

Strength:

Clean and powerful... Warm and realistically reproducable sound. Professionally put together, well worth the money. Will blow the more expensive recievers away. You have to hear it for yourself. Match the speakers with the highest decibal response to get the cleanest sound...KLIPSCH REFERENCE SERIES SPEAKERS HAVE 95 AND UP FREQ. RESPONSE. AWESOME COMBO. GET AN DVD-AUDIO PLAYER WITH DTS AND YOU WILL BE AT THE LIVE CONCERT!!!!!! USE HIGH PERFORMANCE CABLE. you dont need banna clips or i don't anyway.

Weakness:

Instructions to program. Turn TV to VCR mode. Remote not backlit. Heavy and big but not overwhelming. Repeated function entry to accept my cd player so it would connect. Near perfect reciever..these are little meaningless weaknessess. No tech problems here!!

I have had the SR 7200 now for 3 months and I am so happy and feel very satisfied that I have a good product. I am the most percular person when it comes to quality and price for performance ratio. I spent 6 months reviewing other brands and have listened to most all in the $1200 and less range...form Onkyo, Yamaha, Dennon, Sony. I have read the reviews here on the other brands. I think that AudioReview has been so helpful....Thank You AudioReview. The 7200 did have a problem in the past but they have corrected it, just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer, and call Marantz to ensure this is a legit business. It all comes down to doing your homework, unless you have money to blow. First on the Review... Power...Power...Marantz has plenty of it and it is clean and warm power at that. Any more power and you may as well go to a concert in the front row by the speaker itself...and let the guy spit on you when he is singing. Again,,,CLEAN..NO DISTORTION AT HIGH VOLUME LEVELS!!... Second review... the reciever itself is simple asthetiaclly, it looks nice. The buttons and display panel are laid out nicely. Volume control has that solid feel when adjusting manually. Funtions are clear and understood. Third review...there are many connections in the back to fit all of your needs... Optical out, S-Video, RCA, digital and analog modes are available for most all needs. Third Review...the multiroom ability is nice. I am thinking of running a set of speakers to my bedroom or even the shower...singing in the rain. Fourth Review...the remote is nice and professional looking and is simple once you get use to it of course and than you realize it is desined very well. Only thing is the programming is a bit complex and you have to follow instructions to the letter. The bad thing is the remote is not backlit..so when watching a movie in the dark you have the turn the lights on if you change setup modes. The worst thing I encountered with this reciever is the initial setup with the remote to program your system to each device ( CD/ DVD, VCR, Speaker size, decibal range and speaker distance) once you understand it doesn't take long to experiment. Here is a hint in the programming..1st turn the TV to channel 3/4 as you would to use your VCR. YOU may have to select video 1,2 0r 3 on the TV to get the onscreeen display ( OSD Button) to show from the remote control programming.
