Strength:
Looks good and sounds great. Ample power and clean precise sound. The remote is sweet. Circle Surround is excellent for TV, dish, VHS, and music. Handles 6.1 beautiful.
Weakness:
The manual was written by Engineers and was not proofed by a user. Note that my SR7200 is a 2002 model. I've experienced NONE of the negative problems (pops, hiss, fire) that some others have reported. I've read that 2002 models are OK - I can attest to that. The SR7200 is a fine unit. It looks professional, is well built, and weighs a fairly hefty 32+ lbs (a good thing). The manual is written by Engineers for Engineers though. It, unfortunately, assumes the user knows about home theater already, so it doesn't explain the "whys" and "how-tos" very well. But, set up was fairly easy (I've been through the drill before), and the on-screen display was helpful. Don't let the manual discourage you from this unit though. Set up is basically the same with any receiver, not just this one. Your local dealer, or info from the internet can help you get through the first time. The remote is great. It is a learning remote (here is where the manual is good). You can program your other remotes into the SR7200 remote - clever. And there is a display screen on the SR7200 remote. Of course, the bottom line reason we all go through this, is for the sound. Well, you'll be happy. Marantz is known for clean, precise, warm sound; and the SR7200 delivers. I have six AAD, E-30 satellites with an AAD, E-8 sub - around an approximate 20 ft. x 30 ft. room, with 8 ft. ceilings. And two of the walls are fairly open into a kitchen and a side room. Prologic II is nice, but most of the time I use the Circle Surround 5.1 for music, TV, and VHS. It was well worth it to me to jump to the SR7200 just to get Circle Surround and the learning remote. For DVD, the SR7200 comes through big time; whether in 5.1 or 6.1 - Dolby Digital or DTS. In any case, the sound of the SR7200 is powerful and clean. Once I had all the speaker levels dialed in properly, I've been smiling ever since. Separation from all the speakers is excellent. I will say that the most difficult part of setting up a complete system is getting the speaker levels right and the sub placement right. But that does not really have anything to do with the receiver. Now, the only adjustment between all my uses is to go onscreen and lower the level of the sub 6 db for DVD. Otherwise, I don't touch the levels for anything else I listen to. So, bottom line - this is a class receiver with plenty of power; that looks good and sounds good - whether played quiet or loud. Casual Listener
Strength:
Famous brand, beautiful panel design, component Input/Output.
Weakness:
Assembly Quality Control require more tight monitoring. Average AV amp with enough surround features for casual listener. Reasonable price on this grade and give you comfort, user friendly operation. Unfortunately when I remove the metal cover, one circuit board have crack on the corner, although it does not affect the performance, it shows workmanship needs to be improved, maybe because this model is made in China. I can not claim for replacement since customer is not susposed to open the cover !! Similar Products Used: Denon 2802 |

Strength:
a musically wonderful receiver Sr7200 even looks good
Weakness:
back lit remote would be nice I could not be more pleased with this receiver. Its too bad Marantz had initial problems with the SR7200. My unit works perfectly and I think the early defective units should be out of the distribution channels. The musical quality is astounding. Stereo produces a spacious, wonderful sound stage, very clear and natural, very smooth. SRS labs circle surround is very effective, good for some music sources and excellent for DSS. The receiver delivers everything asked of it for home theater. The learning remote has effectively replaced four other remotes and now controls all audio/video equipment. If you are looking for a receiver for home theater but really value excellent music, check out the Marantz SR7200. Wow... Similar Products Used: Denon 2802, yamaha rx1000 |

I hope everything.
Weakness:
I hope none. I anxiously await the arrival of this receiver. After reading all the posts here, I decided to call Marantz technical support and ask them directly about the problems reportedly associated with this unit. The individual I talked to was to the point in admitting they'd had problems with an early production run. He said anyone buying one of these should just check the serial number for the first 6 digits. As long as the serial number started with "MZ0202" ... (2002 model) you'd be in the "clear" of getting a "bug free" unit. In ordering from HIFI.com, I made it abundantly clear that I would be returning this receiver ASAP if they shipped one that did not start with the MZ0202 serial number. I'll update here shortly to let everyone know how it turns out. I'm giving the ratings based on expectations. (I hope it's not like my first marriage. There were some violated expectations for both parties in that deal. I digress.) I think it was a pretty good deal because they had them on sale and offered 12 months with no interest financing. If it turns out to be a good product, that's a deal I couldn't pass up. |

Hi, I was wondering how the other people on here set-up their channel levels for their reciever. I have an athena center channel and rears, and I have to big jbl studio series towers. What levels do you recommend for each channel? This is mainly for watching movies. I usually put the center channel at around +10. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Strength:
Pure Stereo for music and the format detection for movies. You can''''t get this gear at Best Buy / Circuit City!
Weakness:
Sub level is buried DEEP in the On Screen Display...cost me $710 for an analog pre-amp to get easy access for sub levels, which is going to cost this puppy an entire point overall! In a word...phenomenal...I use the SR7200 strictly as a pre/pro, however, I have used the amplification section on occasion when auditioning different amps. (Acurus, Adcom, finally settled on the MM9000) Dollar for dollar, this thing rules! Musically, I am simply blown away! (Kansas, Greatest Hits...Digitally Remastered, Track 7...and let it rip...and Floyd will give you goosebumps!) Movies..."forget about it"...I can buy the DVD for the price of a trip to the theater! You CANNOT go wrong with this reciever for music or HT...OK...enough Marantz butt kissing...check out my set! Strength:
--Powerful, warm and sweet sounding --Can drive difficult loads without strain --Best "bang for the buck" --Best sounding "receiver" I''ve ever heard --Progamable, learning remote --Build quality
Weakness:
--While the remote is great, you have to drill down a bit to get to certain menus Since there is no "review" for the SR 8200, I''ll put my impressions here. First, let me recommend talking to Mark at Accessories4less before you spend $1,300-$1,700 elsewhere for the SR 8200. They handle refurbished units from Marantz. All the latest "updates" are incorporated and testing is done to make sure they operate to spec. They come with a one year warranty (you can buy extended warranties from them that are reasonable). Even with the extended warranty, I saved over $300-$600 that a new one would have cost over the net. Customer service is very good, too. I received the unit double boxed and there was absolutely no evidence that this unit was a "refurb". On to the review...the sound of this unit reminds me very much of "tube" amps...very sweet and warm! There is absolutely no "grittiness" or strain when listening to this unit, even at high volumes. It is very quiet (both soundwise and operationally). Two channel stereo is very involving and airy. I have low impedence speakers and the 8200 drives them (all 6 channels) without strain. Coming from a two channel system for music, I was a bit skeptical about the DPLII and Circle Surround modes. Let''s just say that both are the real deal. While I still listen to music mostly in stereo, the DPLII and, especially CS really does give the impression of 5.1 surround from two channels. It''s a testament to the 8200 two channel mode that I get a very open sound with just stereo material. The surround modes are great with poorly recorded stereo CDs and Pro Logic DVDs and VHS. Even mono recordings become more enveloping with DPLII and CS. This is a very powerful receiver. In my old system I used to have one set-up for music and another for HT. This receiver is so good, I now have combined the two and haven''t missed my "music only" system one bit. Receiver is pretty straight forward to set-up. I use banana plugs for speakers, so plugging in 7 speakers (including the sub) was fairly easy, as was connecting tos and analog connections. Everything is well marked. Build quality is as good as I''ve seen, even compared to some "high buck" pre-amps and mono blocks. Play some DTS-ES material through this with the rear (6th channel) surround hooked up (like Gladiator) and the bennefit of the extra channel becomes clear. The remote is the best I''ve seen included with from any manufacturer. Similar Products Used: Sony 555ES, Denon 3802, Integra, Cary Audio |

Strength:
Great sound both w/ movies and music. Learning remote. Circle Surround sometimes beats DPL-II (w/ music). DD/DTS 6.1 surround 7.1 inputs and 6.1 pre-outs for external amps.
Weakness:
Configuration only via On Screen Display. Music sounds a lot louder than movies on same volume level. A couple of months ago I went to Botman Audio and listened to three receivers: Denon 3802, Onkyo 797 and the Marantz SR-7200. I listened to them using Dynaudio Audience 42 speakers. The Denon and Onkyo were really out of my budget but wanted some comparison and these more expensive units were the only ones that compared to the 7200 featurewise (6.1, DPL-II, etc.). At the time I thought the Onkyo was fabulous when we listened to some music. However, when we played Pearl Harbour we noticed audio dropouts during the movie. So I went back home w/o a receiver, disappointed about audio dropouts. More importantly though was that the Onkyo was way, way above my budget and I really wanted a good surround system to properly watch movies (music comes second). So about 2 months later I went back to Botman Audio, explained my dillema and on their advice I went for the 7200 because it offers you the most for your buck, or in my case, Euro. I settled for Elac Cinema 2 ESP speakers for the time being but I want to buy Dynaudio Audience 42 speakers when I have the money because they sounded awesome. I have had the 7200 for a couple of weeks now and it sounds just wonderful. I can''t remember the 7200 sounding this fantastic at the store but at home I keep being amazed by its musical abilities. It is smooth and perhaps "warm". It has more than ample power to drive my speakers and to fill my 6x5 meter L-shaped room. With movies I can seriously upset my neighbours, movies sound fabulous and I can only imagine it will sound like with the Dynaudio speakers. My unit does suffer from the popping noises though when the mute circuit kicks on. However, this issue has been resolved by Marantz and units with the following serial number or higher are without problems: SR7200/N2B MZ010148002426 and above SR7200/N2G MZ010148002781 and above Make sure you get a unit with a higher serial number if you buy one. My unit will be replaced soon by Botman Audio. I am enjoying this receiver very much and I am glad I went for it instead of the Onkyo or Denon. It is highly recommended.
