Strength:
Sound-Both Music and Movies Hookup and expansion capabilities powerful remote (takes a little getting used to)
Weakness:
Remote is not backlit The 7200 has had some quality control issues in the past but the current units are now fixed (I can attest to this as this is my third one-this review is based on the newer units). As stated in an earlier review, be sure the serial number is higher than 48002426. I love this receiver not only because of it''s great sound but also for it''s great features. Multi-room capability, 6.1 channel capability, sacd/dvd audio hookups, and the dolby pro logic II/cs 5.1 sound is fantastic for some recordings as well as for television. Stereo sound is also great. When listening to Stacy Kent it is if she is standing right there in front of you. For movies this reciever does not skip a beat and is a wonderful match for my B&W 602S2 front and B&W DM303 surround speakers. Movie scores are very enveloping and pull you right into the movie. Action sequences sound very full while hearing every bullet and feeling every explosion. In summary what you get with this receiver is fantastic movie sound and wonderful musicality as an equal. Unless you are going to jump up to separates or spend 2000+ I think you can not do better than the mid range Marantz receivers. Strength:
Sounds clear and powerfull.
Weakness:
Remote, Marantz can def add backlit as a option on the buttons and LCD. Actually preferred the way the SR5000 Remote worked. Before the 7200 I owned a SR-5000, liked it, had some money and was interested in upgrading some components. Decided to upgrade the Reciever for now, DVD 4000 upgrade to DV6200 is next. I must day Marantz makes some awesome products for the price range. The sound improvement between the 5000 and the 7200 is fantastic. (System is BW 603S2 Front, LCR6 Center, 602S1 Rear, AW1000 SUB, Powersonic to speakers and Monster interconnects between units). Witht he SR5000 I listened to Fleetwood Mac and though, fantastic, listened to Eagles and though ok, Then totally oppisite with the 7200, Fleetwood mac is now bland, Eagles are great, Havent had any of the problems with DVD movies that I hear of. Strength:
Marantz name. 6.1 channels. Intelligent remote.
Weakness:
Video problems, basically you can''t watch a movie with it. This sucks. Same video problems as everyone else, just get to a scene where a bright flash happens. Bang, vertical sync is lost for a moment, enough to see the image roll. A few examples: - storm near the end of "Chicken Run". Every lightning makes the image roll - opening scene of Stigmata, just before the menus. A bright flash, and, guess what? An image roll. - menus of Tomb Raider. Almost every option ends with a bright flash. Oh, and yes, an image roll. Stay away from it. Let me repeat. STAY AWAY FROM SR-7200. (I will personally stay away from Marantz, but I can''t comment on other models). |

Price / performance is very good. So far no problems
Weakness:
manual This is my first surround sound receiver. I had a good experience purchasing through the internet. Don''t let people scare you. I saved almost $200 by purchasing this way. Of course you cannot listen to the unit ahead of time (unless you visit your local dealer). Even if there was a problem the low cost of shipping can easily be made up with the $200 you save. If you get lucky you save $200, if you have a problem you save $200-shipping. Internet dealers typically pay shipping one direction. My received showed up with a cracked lcd display on the remote. ABC paid for shipping both directions and got it replaced in less than a week. Now that is service! The unit is great, though I have not put it through the full test yet. The manual is pretty bad, but with some time you can figure it all out Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Clean sound. Good separation. Plenty of inputs and control.
Weakness:
Remote is geared at Marantz products (of course), Manual, only two Optical IN. Hurts if your sources only offer Optical OUT and not coaxial. There are way to many positives to list. I will tell you this is the best receiver for the money that I have found. I spent over a year researching and landed on two models, Marantz 7200 (7000) and Yamaha RXV-1200 (1000). The sound is very clean and I am pleased with the GUI. This unit maintains a good separation of sound between all five speakers and the sub. I found that this review might help you if you know my “picky” concerns with the receiver. The range of volume seems to change between DTS, DD, and PLII. I find that I have to constantly adjust the volume according to the different languages. I am not fond of the remote control, but I think it is better than most remotes included with other A/V receivers. I do not use it to control my entire system, but I have found that it can replace my DVD, CD, and TV remotes. The manual is horrible; thank goodness I hate manuals, because I would have been very disappointed with the lack of detail. The main issue that I have with this receiver deals with the processing of digital sound. This box takes about two seconds to initially process digital sound. When used with a DVR (ex. Tivo), I find that I have to rewind the video further because I have to give the box longer to restart the sound. I do not have this problem on my DVD or when viewing DISH channels in PLII or CS. I am very pleased with the overall quality of this product. I read the reviews of the popping and video problems. When I inquired with my dealer, he informed me those models have been recalled and new models no longer have those problems. It seems people buying from unauthorized dealers are getting the most recent "bad" or refurbished receivers. I recommend this product to the slightly above average home theater enthusiast. If you want to spend under $1000 dollars on a good A/V receiver, I think this is a choice. I opted to by a decent receiver, good speakers, good cable, and a decent TV. Strength:
Excellent PLII and CS, Two Channel stereo is awesome as well. 6 channel and multiroom cap.
Weakness:
Remote is not backlit. I have gone form a Yamaha rxv496 to the Marantz sr7200, and the dfference is amazing! the PLII is a huge step up from standard PL. After comparing the PLII and the circle surround, I have found I prefer the CS. The CS gives alot more life to the the surround speakers in both movies and music. After using the 7200 for a few weeks I decided to upgrade to the 8200thx select reciver. I actully found that I prefered the sound of the 7200 over the 8200! I set everything as I had on the 7200 on the 8200 and the sound fell flat, there was a loss of life from the surrounds and I wasn''''t impressed. As well the price was much higher. I have since gone back to the 7200 and I am much happier with it. As for the pop sound everyone is complainig about mine does not have it, as prior to the purchase the problem had been fixed. Build quality. Excellent sound on both movies and 2 channel. Looks great.
Weakness:
None so far. This is probably the first AV amp/receiver I have owned that does both movies and music well. it has all the latest sound formats on-board and I am very impressed with DPL2. It adds to the rear soundfield immeasurably. Much more so than the 3802 I had briefly. Similar Products Used: Denon AVR3802, Denon AVC-A1D, Yamaha DSP-A1. |

the audio quality and power
Weakness:
none This is one hell of a box! Sound is very accurate, smooth, pure, sweet. No problems with this jewel, problems fixed in latest firmware release. I can''t get over how tremendous the direct mode is for plain old stereo. Just wish I didn''t have neighbors who would complain if I cranked it up - kind of like having a new porche and having to obey a 60 mph limit!. But, if you want it loud, it will sound just as clear and dynamic. Head and shoulder above denon, yamaha, sony for the same price. Similar Products Used: denon, sony |

Strength:
Great clean sound lots of hookups
Weakness:
none worth beefing about. I am a musician and have done quite a bit of research into receievers on the market prior to this purchase. The Denon 2802 is great but you had to use the remote to tune the reciever. There are no TUNING buttons .This is a glaring ommission for a unit calling itself a reciever.I had also strongly considered the NAD 761 but due to the numerous posts about quality control problems, sidestepped it. |

Strength:
wondeful, warm sound for music
Weakness:
plays at WELL BELOW published power specs This unit really shines for two channel music playback. Unfortunately, in surround mode, this unit does not put out ANYWHERE NEAR what Marantz claims for power specs! See the review in the November issue of "Sound & Vison" magazine. Two units in a row had defective video elements! I love MArantz products, but they're starting to cut major corners in quality control. If you want excellent sound for musci and surround, go with the Denon 2802 or 3802. You won't be disappointed! From what I understand the 6200 has the same problems. Shame on you Marantz!!!!
