Strength:
Fine tuned receiver with the right effects and a look that''s happening.
Weakness:
Boasts 110 Watts per channel, but does not sound quite as powerful as it should. Would have dug a little more "oomph!". Very clean sounding machine, and that''s what I was looking for. Compared to H/K receivers(which gives that lowdown feel)this unit plays thinner, but ultimately sharper, me thinks. It''s just a blast to play rock''n''roll on the Circle-surround setting, ''cause it takes certain parts, like vocals, off the rear channel mix. This gives a "trippy" experience for the listener. This is how a good amp. should sound. For speakers, I go with Klipsch bookshelf-types, plus the sc.1 center, and again, it''s a perfect match. I''ll consider a sub also, but first I need to have some fun with the present setup. Similar Products Used: DV6200(can someone explain the little click between tracks ?) |

Strength:
Musicality close to pre/pro separates quality, probably even tube amp on sound direct mode. On Home Theater, just crank up the subwoofer level setup a bit and you''d feel like your in high quality movie cinema.
Weakness:
Pops and video problems on earlier releases. As with the other reviewers, you will all notice that the low ratings are because of these, but most of them mentioned the potential of this receiver. Without these problems, I believe the Marantz would kick off Denon 3802 on ratings. And this is even cheaper ! Just a note of reminder to Marantz, quality control needs to be emphasized when outsourcing assemblies. These ones are made in Korea. Like others, I too have experience the popping and video problems. This is my third unit. Apparently Marantz did attend to this problem and there are new units that have this problem solved. My third unit is working like a charm. No popping and video problems. Because of this, it is every bit worth of the amount I paid. I might have underpaid it even without these problems. It is very musical for 2 channel and it definitely rocks on home theater. The CS 5.1, which is only found on Marantz, beats the heck out of prologic II. I use CS 5.1 on dolby surround recordings and I find it sometimes even better than dolby digital, go figure. I believe it is worth trying out this receiver until you get the good ones. You wont be sorry. I''ll probably have this receiver with me for the next 10 years. Similar Products Used: Yamaha RX-V595A, Denon 3802, Yamaha RX-V1200 |

Stereo sound. Compareble with only much more expensive receivers.
Weakness:
You need a lot of patience to get a well operating specimen, although new receivers are equiped with the modification of factory.(Marantz told me) This is my fifth SR7200. In all previous ones electrostatical plops occur. (one even did burn down with real fire. My sons are still impressed) But at last Marantz introduced a modification program. Within a few days all problems finally solved. Whats left is a wonderful machine. Great sound in stereo, hardly to compare with an Onkyo 696 which sounds very flat. No plops or any unwanted sounds at all. A machine which is worth any penny. If your receiver suffers from plops, special with digital connections, do not hesistate and require for the modification program. This program concerns all receivers 4200 till 7200. You won''t regret. Finally I want to thank Stassen HiFi Netherlands for their endless patience and Audio Oss for your kindness and cooperation. Similar Products Used: SR 5000 Onkyo 696 |

doesnt like older DVD players and popping and clicking noises I bought this AV amp and to my horror after i set it up etc i went to test it with Pearl Harbor playing it on my pioneer 626d player (us import)and guess what it wouldnt decode DTS.... so i went back to the shop i purchased it from and tested my dvd player on a Denon 2808 and a sony1070 and guess what they also wouldnt decode DTS signal DD no problem DTS no way.. so we came to the conclusion that the oldish 626d isnt compat with the newest DTS ES chipsets or the Prologic 2. i also get poping noises from random speakers and they say there isnt a problem |

Strength:
No noise - even at maximum volume ! Clariry - each instrument stands apart on the soundstage Source Direct - does away with equalization, compression Presence - compared to mass-market brands, you will have more of a feeling that you''re "there" due to imaging (which is due to many controversial things like phase coherence, amplifier feedback, tonal balance, etc - Marantz isn''t king of the heap, but they obviously believe that these things matter, because they aren''t bad either)
Weakness:
Smoothness - sorry, I know some people don''t like these subjective adjectives, but my SR-7200 gave me tired ears. Setup - you need to learn how to electronically "cross-connect" the rear inputs to which source. The manual is not especially descriptive on how you do this. It''s unlikely you''ll unpack it from the box and be listening to surround sound in the same day (or even week) you buy it! And, well, then there''s that "pop" problem, and S-video noise problem. Many reviews are favourable to Marantz''s 7200, citing clarity, low noise and good dynamics (esp in Source Direct mode, a feature which bypasses the automatic equalization done in certain surround modes). A large number of reviews mentioned a problem with pops, often during track transistions, on/off thumps, S-video degradation, etc. Those who had their unit repaired (capacitor discharge on the muting cct) often said everything was fine afterwards (I wonder if this included video problems??). I chanced a purchase of an SR-7200 in late Dec 2001 because it met met my needs, and I hoped enough time had passed to work out the quality control bugs. Unfortunately, my relatively late-model SR-7200 suffered all of the aforementioned ailments. Note the pops during track increments were only audible when using the receiver''s Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), such as when connecting a CD or DVD player via TOSLINK optical fibre or Digital Coaxial inputs. Even then, the problem is intermittent, and when I returned the unit, I took along one of the CD''s that would reproduce the problem with 100% certainty. I also found the 7200 a bit tiring to my ears, even at low levels and short periods (15min) of time. I initially dismissed this, but every time I listened, "tired ears" again. It was always a small relief to turn the unit off (loud pop notwithstanding!). My review is not meant to invalidate those who love their SR-7200''s, and who are compelled to defend their 7200''s performance. So be it. I have Marantz CD players in my system which are very good...they''re not Linn CD12''s, but they are dramatically better than the mid-fi components found in mass-market stores.) Marantz can be very good indeed. My solution: The dealer gave me a deal on a snazzy, new SR-8200. (Good reason to buy from a reputable dealer) There''s no review area for it yet so I can''t write it up, but has no pops, no video noise, and it isn''t tiring to listen to (it also costs twice as much). I would have liked more time to save up, but it was worth the extra money (for me). If live music is a 10, and telephone audio is a 0, to me the 7200 rates 6.5 (assuming no pops/video noise), and the 8200 rates 8.0. If it all worked, it would be a very good value for the money. Wonderfully musical and dynamic sound. Looks.
Weakness:
Quality control. Circuit design flaws? Disappointing becasue the sound quality of this piece had a lot going for it. Unfortunately it''s quality control had little to be desired. After trying 4 units from Cambridge Soundworks I gave up. Pops and clicks that occured when I muted, powered down or switched sources happened when the unit was powered up for a period of time (>1/2 hour). The pops came from the sub, surrounds, fornt channels with no warning and proved to be a version of chinese water torture on my brain. It''s a pitty really considering the sound quality thorugh my NHTs was rich and detailed. Compared to my previous HK510 (another QC nightmare) this unit had much better treble detail and better vocals. The effects of the direct mode were also easy to hear. In particular the Marantz proved to be much more adept at infusing orchestrated recordings with more unrestrained dynamics whereas HK and Onkyo tended to compressed dynamics. Calls to Marantz about the problem yielded nothing but by the book "no sir we haven''t heard of such a problem before" Fortuntely the people at Cambridge Soundworks (Mike in particular at the Berlin MA store) know a thing or two about GREAT cusotmer service. He gave me my money back even though my trial time had expired. No grief, just apologies and a smile. Needless to say I will continue recommending CSW to my friends and family as a helluva great place to purchase their loudspeakers and some electronics- got to love those Newtons! Nice appearance Decent remote
Weakness:
As above. Extremely disappointed with this product. perhaps there truly are "good" and "bad" models out there, but mine had so many clicks and pops when changing tracks and powering the unit on and off I worried my speakers would be seriously damaged. Reminded me of the days of vinyl! and quite frankly sound not nuch better than that era! My wife is the farthest thing from an audiophile but we both noticed a big difference between this unit and the comparably priced Denon 2802, which the good folks at audiosound agreed to send me as a replacement. Happy with the Denon and very disappointed with marantz. Incidentally, I also bought a Marantz DVD/CD player, and although I am not as disappointed, Marantz''s quality control clearly poor. Go with the Denon 2802 or 3802. Caveat emptor to those who buy a Marantz. Similar Products Used: Denon 2802 and 3802, Integra recievers, Onkyo 797 and 696. |

This should have been a great receiver. Dolby PLII, plenty of 6.1 power, nice remote.
Weakness:
Unacceptable problem with loss of video sync whenever there is a bright scene or transition on DVD & satellite using the s-video inputs. In living with the remote, I discovered there isn''t much memory for learned commands. After several attempts, I could only teach it about 2 and half components worth of commands before it refused any more. *** THIS IS FOR THE SR-6200 *** Sorry for the improper model number but there isn''t a section for it. I really wanted this to work out, but after getting two faulty units, I''m going with my second choice, a Denon 2802. I knew there were issues with the Marantz 6200 & 7200, but some of the previous reviews were positive so I took a shot. I have to say Authorized Electronics has been great up to now. They issued a call tag and sent a replacement at no cost to me. This time around I''m paying the small cost difference between the Marantz 6200 and the Denon 2802, but they''re paying the shipping both ways. Very impressive. Look for my Denon 2802 review in the near future. Similar Products Used: Pioneer VSX-D1S flagship pro-logic receiver. Still works great - moving it into the master bedroom when the Denon arrives. Sound Quality "Because Music Matters"
Weakness:
The remote took a couple of hours to program and fine tune, otherwise it is just fine. The SR7200 is simply the best receiver for the money. It has great sound, and has all of the features I want without paying for the ones I do not want. I have been shopping for an AV receiver for about 5 months. My criteria was above average sound quality, A-B switching for outdoor speakers, DD, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II. It seems like I must have read every magazine article and web site on the subject. Even though I read about the Marantz SS7200 with its popping and clicking, was still interested since the reviews were mixed. I tried to buy the 7200 on line but it was out of stock so I decided to purchase the Onkyo 696 instead, due to my still lingering concerns about the Sr7200. I got it home it worked fine except the sound was muddy and not as clear as I expected. I also had problems switching the sound to my outdoor speakers. I called Onkyo Support a few times and even called my local Monitor Audio rep in case something was wrong with my speakers. It was too much trouble, it did not work and I was not happy with the sound so I returned the Onkyo 696. As soon as the Marantz 7200 arrived, I had all features, bell and whistles working within an hour of unpacking it. I thought I wanted Dolby Pro Logic II for broadcast television but once I heard the Circle Surround, I was blown away. For CD music the Circle Surround is the best multi channel product I have heard, however the Source Direct feature gives pure two channel stereo sound. Since Direct mode bypasses all unneeded circuitry, the sound is almost audiophile quality and give much better imaging with my MA 8i''s. DVD Movie Mode? Yeah Baby! It has more than enough power the drive my MA "Full Metal Jacket" speaker system. DD is great but DTS is even better. The multi channel steering is clear and concise at all listening levels. I would recommend (and have) the Marantz SR7200 as the cornerstone to anybody looking for a reasonably priced home theater system. Strength:
I kinda like the remote. The sound is so Smoooooooooth! It beats Denon 33802 for bells and wistles and I think it has a crisper sound. It is a perfect match for my monitors (by the way: the monitor series is the best Bang for your buck...nothing can touch em''). I wou;d give it a value rating of 5 but I am cheap so it is a 4. You can get it over the inter net cheaper but the service is not there. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MA and PA shops. The internet could kill them and then where do you go to do sound checks on speakers and stuff?
Weakness:
THX... but then my DVD can''t decode THX either and I can''t afford more speakers for THX. First I must say Bose blows, stay away. O.K. now the 7200: I am by no means an expert, thus I will be short. If you buy this receiver from a competent dealer they will tell you that it had problems at first. About 5%, but since the fix it has been working great. Make sure you get one that has the fix or has been built since the problem was fixed. This is an awesome piece of electronics for the money: It does it all but THX. It works well with my paradigm monitor 5''s and mini''s. Again Make sure it is the one with the fix and you will love it. As far as I know a few movies that have been mentioned make a poping on most receivers but the new 7200 shouldn''t. The Dvds are to blame in some cases. Similar Products Used: Yamaha, Sony, JVC. |
