Strength:

Simplissity both in looks and use. Gives a sense of quality, not like the most flashy jap models.

Weakness:

The remote, you could use a brick and you wouldn't know much of a difference.

Ok, the NAD 761 is easy to use, easy to listen to and easy to look at. Pretty much all you need and no useless crap.
The 2ch gives a pure and full sound. Bass is strong,
hardly need a sub, but of course a sub allways does a bit more for those really low frequensies.
Havent tried the 5.1 so I cant say much in that department. But I will pretty soon purchase the needed stuff.
But as for the 2ch sound I can only say it's great.
The classical, the blues, the techno and the rock works great.
It's an all eater.
And I cant wait untill I buy some really good speaker cables and hear how good the sound really can get.
I mean if it's this good now, how good can it get then?
It hasent even been burnt in yet!!!

So far as I am concerned the only negative thing I can say about the NAD 761 is the big, ugly brick for a remote.
So I'm waiting for the new universal remote that's supposed to come in april.
The sligth delay many has been writing about, has not been bothering me a bit. Hardly noticed it at all. Not really even worth mentioning. Concider it more as an dramatical pause before the sound blows you away.

If you like a hundred buttons and thick manualls wich you have to read to find the power on button. You should not buy this.

But otherwise Buy it, enjoy it!!! I did, and I dont regrett it. You cant get better value for your money.

Strength:

simplicity, 45 amps HCC, good looking, sounds excellent

Weakness:

remote (no DVD control buttons, not programmed or learning, not backlit), manual (no specs), what's with the Video 1, Video 2 etc. buttons and inputs?, only one component video input

First of all, I would like to apologize for my review below. No product in this price range is worth only 1 star. Secondly, I originally listened to a unit that wasn't even burnt in. My friend purchased one a couple of weeks ago and has been burning it in for several hours every day. It now sounds fantastic!!! Even the onboard 2 channel music DA chip sounds good. The T761's midrange and lack of Japanese receiver brightness makes this unit a winner.
I also noted in my last review (in the weaknesses) area the lack of a Home Theater Equalizer for movies. This unit does not need one. It always sounds smooth. The DNR is useful in the wee hours of the morning in order to lighten up the bass... and what bass! I'm sure it has a little to do with the High Current Capability of the unit. The units transformer makes the T761 weigh more than $2000 receivers!
Lastly, the unit looks great. The display is easier to read than any on the market from 10 feet away. Also, the NAD 541 and 521 CD players match the unit perfectly from colour to buttons to display. Check out the RDS if you live in a big city- it's cool.
NAD may have given less toys with this unit and added the savings towards quality amplifiers and pre-amplifiers but this unit is a steal regardless. I can't wait to get the learning remote from NAD when it becomes available.

Strength:

Increadible on stereo music. Strong DD, DTS, prologic performance. Solid 5 channels of amps, silmplicity.

Weakness:

Although not horrible, the HTR-1 could be better; no source tone memory; not great comp-SVIDEO converter.

Well, about a month ago, I got the bug to upgrade my system to include DTS and an all in one solution preamp processor (was using a Marantz AV600 for analog music/vid switching and Denon AVD-2000 for DD). I started looking for HT pre/pro's but most of the new ones in the $1000 range were pretty weak on stereo music (Marantz, Adcom, Rotel).

I went to audition another unit and the salesman put the bug in my ear that the T-761 (a receiver) was a better pre/pro/tuner than anything I was looking at price wise. I started to think...why not give it a try. I listened to one and agreed. It had every feature I needed and still sounded great on both music and theater.

I ended up purchasing a refurbished unit through Yawaonline. My experience with them in general was excellent. The unit arrived as promised. I hooked it up, and was extremely happy...for about a week. In my quest for a perfectly balanced system, I pulled out my SPL meter and hit the test button. When the tone hit the lft rr channel...it was gone. NO, not the infamous quality control problems! Anyways, I called YAWA and they offered to swap out the unit for a new one for a nominal fee.

I just got the new unit and hooked it up...no problems as of yet. It still sounds awesome and really couldn't be happier with the sound.

Strength:

Sound, distinctive NAD style (which I happen to love), RDS is a nice feature, simplicity

Weakness:

Lacking in versatility for some, HTR-1 remote not greatest

I bought my first NAD product in 1985 and fell in love with the sound and styling. My 7140 has served me well all the intervening years.

On the occasion of installing a home theater, I auditioned like priced units from HK, Marantz, Integra, and Denon. Although all sounded good, I was especially impressed with the 761 on music. Visually, the NAD won hands down (love it or hate it, I love it). I would rate the Integra second both musically and visually. The NAD was certainly a better match to the B&W speakers I had selected.

Anyway, no problems thus far and excellent performance. I know NAD has had some quality control problems. The HTR-1 remote is OK, but I got a Pronto anway and solved that (and other) problems.

For me, solid sound and simplicity win.

Strength:

Lots of power, excellent dynamics, 5.1 pre-out & amp-in, simplicity

Weakness:

Miserable remote, clicking noise when switching to Dolby Digital model

I bought this unit 1 week ago. After 3 hours of use, I started experiencing problems with the receiver. The unit would no longer respond to the remote control commands when listening to a DD source (DVD, digital cable converter). It would work again either after switching to another source (not DD) or ater switching-off the DD source.

I told the retailer about it and they replaced it with a new unit, which is running fine now.

The remote is a miserable device which is definitively the worst one I have seen so far. The buttons stick, so be careful with the volume-up one. It also lacks direct access to FM station preset numbers and you cannot select the disc input from it. You need to switch it manually on the unit.

I contacted NAD and they confirmed me that they will replace this remote free of charge with the newer learning model which they said will be available in April/May of this year.

I am very pleased with the sounding of the unit. It delivers tight bass and it is very musical, especially with Jazz.

I think that this unit offers an excellent price/quality ratio.
