Strength:

Sound quality, simplicity

Weakness:

Remote, delays when switching modes

Excellent receiver with great sound quality and simple functionality; it does just what it needs to do and does it well. The enhancements included in this unit also resolve the few shortcomings found in the T760 (no tone by-pass, and sub-out in stereo mode).

Looking for good stereo quality in a HT receiver I auditioned this receiver against the Marantz SR7000 and found the sound quality incomparable. To me the Marantz was too warm and not as detailed. Dolby Digital sound is also excellent, though that is secondary for me and I have no basis for comparison to other receivers.

I use Dynaudio Audience 42 speakers and a Phase Technology Octave 10 sub (no center or surrounds yet).

As another reviewer mentioned NAD also informed me that replacement learning remotes would be supplied in April 2001, which is great because the current one is weak. The only weakness I find in this amp are some 1-2 second delays while switching modes (analog to digital and source), which I think is an insignificant issue for most people.

Strength:

stunning looks, great simplicity, HCC 45 apms!

Weakness:

awful remote, no home theater equalizer, only 1 component input!

This unit is powerful, good looking, nicely built, has a great price, and is simple to use. Still, don't let the "music first" antics of the company and other reviewers fool you. The technology used in this unit is very impressive but the music that comes from 2 channel music listening is anything but flat. Although this unit does not suffer from the brightness and sibilance that many Japanese receivers suffer from, the unit does not have a ruler flat frequency response. This is not evident with Jazz, Blues and Classical music. Listen to rock music through this unit and you will know what I mean. It suffers from reticence in vocals and does not convey the attack that rock music has in the mid bass to mid regions. This unit seems to cater to listeners of Classical, Jazz, and Blues music.

Strength:

Everything that everybody else has listed.

Weakness:

the NEW HTR-1 Remote! It's huge, way to complicated to program and doesn't want to keep the programmed stuff in memory.

Love the amp... hate the remote...
But.. since the remote has nothing to do with sound quality... I'm still giving it 5 stars.

Strength:

excellent sound quality

Weakness:

product defects, poor service

Purchased product in Feb. 2001.

I chose this product because of my previous experience owning NAD equipment.

NAD 761 developed center channel and subwoofer intermittant cut out problem. Cut out problems could not be reproduced by the NAD service center, The Service Bench in Norwood, MA. Finally took unit back to where purchased, Audio Studio, Brookline, MA., where they have reproduced problem. Due to the defects, poor service and reports on this site of center channel problems and poor build quality in general I have asked for a refund. To date I have not received a response.

I will keep you posted.

Strength:

strong, deep sound,

Weakness:

remote, lack of flexibility in assigning video and audio inputs

I spent quite a while looking at similar HT products. This was without a doubt the best I found for under $1000, and held its own with more expensive separates from ADCOM and Rotel. I have owned NAD products before and this did not suprise me. I like their design philosophy, and it is one of the reasons I bought this unit.

The 80WPC is very misleading. There is a lot of headroom here. The sound depth is remarkable. Like many others, I found the remote to be quite poor, but in my case it really didnt matter because I use a Marantz RC-2000. I just created the new video switches to go with my old NAD codes and tossed the new remote in a cabinet. I also found the lack of flexibility a put off. I would have liked the ability to just plug in the video and audio inputs and assign which set I wanted to put together. It took a little work to get everything paired up. In hooking up my dvd player with a digital input I ended up waisting the rest of the audio inputs on that assigned line. I know that this is something that typically comes with more expensive components, but I would have liked to see it here too.

All in all, a very nice product for its price.

This is my second post. Given some of the recent reviews indicating quality problems I feel that I should complete my initial review to report that I also had a a defective unit. My first unit worked well for a few weeks, until the left channel began to crackle or go out in certain modes. One night, playing at a low volume level, sparks flew out of the unit and it shut down forever.

Both NAD and the dealer were helpful with the problem, and the dealer replaced the unit in two weeks.

The new unit has been working beautifully for over a month now, so I am not changing my initial rating.

High Current AMPs, Music First Sound, Simplicity of Design.

Weakness:

T760 Remote

I've identified the link below for individuals who're having
some issues with hooking up their subwoofer and configuring the "Bass management" or "Speaker Set-Up" functions for their 5.1 channel receiver. The link takes you to Polk Audio's site and has valuable information on options for setting up your speaker connections for a Digital Home Theater System.

http://www.polkaudio.com/home/faqad/advice/bassmanage.html

I'm disappointed that Louis has had the misfortune to receive a couple of problem units. However, my 761 has performed flawlessly and the sound it provides seems to improve weekly. I utilized the OSD to adjust my center size and volume to a satisfactory setting for music & video formats. Utilizing the information from Polk's web site, I've experimented with Speaker hookups and Bass Management setting to achieve, for my sound taste, optimal performance from may T761 and speakers/sub. BTW- The T761's subwoofer output (LFE) filteres out above 100 Hz.

I've never regreted purchasing this unit. Those with set-up issues and concerns, please visit the web site and further enhance your sound experience.

My experience with this unit still warrants 5 Stars.

Strength:

Really good sound, alot of amp-power so it runs my dali 909 real good.

Weakness:

ALL THE DEFECTS!!!!

I had a unit that was totaly odd. (I´ve also had a t-760 with problems and returned that unit, because of problems)

Then I waited a couple of month until the t-761 was released, thought the new model would be improved and work without any problems...

I started up my t-761, and it seemed to work. I played cd:s in my dvd-player, so far soooo good. Good sound, I was really pleased.

Then I played a dvd-disc... and smack, there was strange sounds comming out of my front speakers, however not the back surround speakers. I first thought the cabels were wrongly conneted or something, but all connections were ok.

The sound was like... I can´t explain it in text... like.. hmm... like a bakground noise/hum anyway.

I returned the unit and the guys in my local shop were really helpfull and wanted this to be solved in a smooth way. However they couldn´t believe I returned a second unit, I mean the bad luck I must have.

So they listened to the unit and exactly the same phenomen happend in the shop, the same #%#"&%$"# noise. I got my money back and I will hardly ever buy a NAD again of any kind, until I KNOW they have better quality, meaning not so many units that are defect.

IT`S A REAL PITTY, I REALLY LIKED THE SOUND IN THE MACHINE. The best sound I´ve perhaps ever heard, (in that price-range). If it could only work without problems.

(NAD chapen up! You have a great machine, but YOU REALLY NEED TO MAKE MORE % OF THE UNITS WORK WITHOUT ERRORS! Remember: I also had problems with the T-760.)

I give the vaule rating a 5 -star because of the good sound for that kind of money. (If the machine works ok)

However I give only 1 star for overall rating, since this unit really have made a mess for me. It did NOT work ok at all, read above.

Summary: A really great sounding machine. (5 star on sound/value) But problems with units not working ok...(1 star because in that area.)

To the previous post: I had the same problem with my T760 and Sony VL900 remote. (I believe that for now the T760 remote is the same as the T761 remote).

The problem is caused by how the NAD remote comes out of sleep mode when you press a button.

Check this page:

http://nadelectronics.com/Support/faq.html

on the NAD website. Item #23 describes a learning procedure that I used with the Sony VL900 universal - this one remote now controls my T760 just fine.

Hope this helps.

Strength:

Accuracy, Bass Extension, Beautiful Midrange Clarity!

Weakness:

None so far!

I gave the Marantz SR7000 to a friend. Yes gave it to him. Marantz is warm. (muddy would be a better word.) Marantz also has exagerated bass extension. This Nad T761 is a great match for my Boston Acoustics VRM60's. Boston PV600 Sub. I'm not running rears at this time. This system is in my bedroom, which is also an office. My wife loves to listen to cd's and this receiver is beautifully balanced between Home theater and music. If you can find an NAD dealer give this baby a try! You won't be dissapointed, and don't let the 80watts scare you away. It has plenty of dynamic headroom. Enjoy!.....
