Look below, can't add anything more

Weakness:

NO TAPE MONITOR LOOP ! ?

This is the one folks. Do you realize that there are now 3 separate threads on this receiver! What does that tell you! Honestly, just love it except for one thing, no tape monitor loop. Onkyo isn't the only manufacturer doing this nowadays either. I have an old pair of bose 901's that I wanted to stick in the basement and use just for music during parties. Of course with the 901's you MUST have their equalizer in the loop, or they REALLY sound bad. The funny thing is that on Onkyo's lower model, the 474, you can still do this. Go figure? Oh, by the way, I do have some hiss on my center channel, first you pause the DVD or CD, then you crank the volume up to max, then you walk up to the speaker and place your ear on it, VOILA!, hisssssssssssssssssssssss.

Strength:

Excellent DVD/Movie RECIEVER, good overall unit, exceptional FM reception.

Weakness:

No EQ. Or EQ display

Well, I see alot of negatives lately... however...
all i can say is. This unit is a staircase above the usual.
JVC, sony, pioneer, etc... Its on a level closer to higher end units, but not a a level on the lower level japananese name brands.

With a HIGH CURRENT AMP, you do NOT need to have 120 w/ channel. Watts do NOT tell the whole story of an amplifer. Its the synergy of Amps and Watts that make the whole package.

This Reciever, has awesome FM reception, I haven't recieved
an FM signal this good... well ever. I coupled this unit with a panasonic A120 DVD, watched a couple movies and was blown away.

This is the same model in two of the Circuit City's that i went to that runs all of their theatre rooms. If the sony, or other units had that much punch at 120w/channel then they would use those. Anyway, everyone I talked to said onkyo was overall just a better amp. I took it home have used it a couple days, and haven't been anything but impressed... For around 380$. What do you want... No this isn't a macintosh, or NAD, or DENON, but for the price is sounds close to it.

Take care,
Happy listening.

Strength:

Flexibility, value, remote, and of course the music.

Weakness:

No S-video, one optical

Very good product. Mine does not have a "hiss" problem. Tried a number of receivers without input at high volumn, and they all hummed. If you are concerned, go to circuit city or other Onkyo dealer and run some empirical tests.

Remote is a blessing. Worth some change itself. Very simple to program, and effective with my Toshiba DVD, JVC TV, RCA VCR, etc.

Already had a Onkyo CD player for 8-9 years, and the quality of that unit was one reason I went with the TXDS 575 rather than take a (well supported by reviews) flyer on the Nak AV7.

Listened to number of CDs with new Wharfdale modus 1.6 and center from uBid. Heaven. Particularly appreciate ability to control volume of all speakers in the surround array. The digital coax (2) and optical (1) allow me to go cheap on the analog interconnects, which must be in place for some reason.

Haven't played a DTS movie yet. Just got Saving Private Ryan, and I expect good things.

Ubid has a good price on these ($383). Bestpriceaudiovideo.com has a better price ($365).

Strength:

Great value, feature packed. Great overall sound for the $$

Weakness:

s-video, shallow Bass output

Absolutely NO problems with hiss. I noted that other reviewers have moved their receiver further away from the TV to get rid of the hissing and it has worked.. My receiver is directly below my TV and no hissing at all..
DTS and Dolby Digital with this machine is absolutely incredible. I purchased Saving Private Ryan and was blown away by the sound. CD listening is excellent. TV is not quite up to par.. Overall a great value!

Strength:

DTS , remote

Weakness:

Very Noisy.

I use it in a fairly large room, so it is useable. But if you get close enough to the front speakers (5-6 feet) the hissing is obvious.... Turned everything off, but the receiver... If I turn the volume completely down the hissing dissapears. I am using Polk RT speakers, Monster Cable cables.

What good is a discreet output section when the preamp and processing circuits are full of cheap ICs?

I talked to an audio tech at Circuit City's service center and he confirmed this hissing on these Onkyo's.

Strength:

Easy setup. Remote is OK. Pretty good sound

Weakness:

Noise. Cheap connectors for surround speakers

I'm sure I am going to hear it from a lot of you, but I
must confirm that I had the "hum" and "hiss" problem also.
Being an electrical engineer, I had the luxury to take the
unit in to work before returning it and checking out the
frequency spectrum of the speaker outputs with a null
digital stream input. I was getting a "sloppy" spur in the
spectrum at 60Hz at the level of about -37dbF to about -40dBF. On other thing I noticed was a "smear" of noise
between 15KHz-17KHz whenever the volume was turned up off
of the off psoition. This spectrum displayed an SNR no
better than 55dB! These problems were, as others have stated, unique to the particular unit I had in my hands. However, for an electronics company to let such a unit out the door these days is unheard of! The unit I bought showed the same "noise" symptoms in the store when I returned it. The demo in the store did not. This problem manifested itself as a fairly loud 60Hz hum out of my >200watt sub and
a noticable hiss during any quiet passages. I paid $480 on
sale at Circuit City. Interestingly enough, when I returned the unit, the clerk at the counter came right out and said "Not another Onkyo coming back!"

On the flip side, at higher volumes the unit sounded great and did a good job with panning and channel seperation. It is easy to setup and use and has a descent learning remote, though not backlit. If they could get their quality improved on their amp design I would definately have kept it.
