POWER!!!!!

I love this reciver,It's very easy to use as well as the sound quality. I play my music very loud, sometimes my lows get washed out by my highs. I have a 10'boston acoustics sub woofer that pounds at a low level, but on the Onkyo, when it's really loud all i hear is my treble. If your thinking of buying this product you CANT be a person who likes their music loud. If you listen to your music at a reasonable level you will love it!

Strength:

Remote, clean sound, quality construction.

Weakness:

No AV inputs on fron of unit

After looking at several units in the $400 - $500 price range, I'd have to say that the Onkyo TX-DS575x is a great buy for the average home theatre. I paid approximately $508 (US) for mine but I live in Canada just outside of Toronto.

I was looking at a Denon AVR-1801 but I'm glad I chose Onkyo. One of the big complaints about the Denon receiver was the remote. Some reviewers on this site opted to purchase a universal remote and leave the Denon remote in the box.

I doubt anyone will be leaving their Onkyo remote in the box and purchasing a universal remote. This is a fabulous back-lit remote! Ergonomically it fits perfectly in your hand. Despite what some reviews have said, I think the layout of the buttons is quite logical. I've been able to put the remotes for my VCR, TV and DVD player on the shelf for good. Programming almost all of the functions of my other remotes into the Onkyo was fairly easy to accomplish.

The Dolby Digital and DTS decoding sounds great. I've yet to hear any distortion or hiss and I've had the volume up full several times while testing the unit. I'm more than happy with its power handling and 'loudness'. The volume goes up to 70 but leaving it at around 40 - 50 is more than adequate unless you want to impress your friends with a THX trailer.

This receiver is not Onkyo's top of the line receiver. It's not meant to provide sound for a hall or an open-air stadium. For the average home theatre, I think it has more power than you need.

The average age of the guys that have been complaining about its lack of power is probably about 18 yrs. I'm 32 yrs., like it loud, and this receiver delivers.

The solid construction and sheer weight of this unit are a sign of its quality. DSP modes and 5 channel stereo are nice. The back of the unit has plenty of inputs. You won't find any of the cheaper pin terminations for your speakers - nothing but banana-plug terminals. Digital coaxial/optical inputs are there for the Dolby Digital and DTS. There aren't any component video inputs on the back but if you need those then go to the next model up.

Strength:

Great Sound, Great remote

Weakness:

Little hot, could use more power, but 70w is really underated on these

This reciever kicks ass, it is pushing 2 wussy sony speakers and 2 cerwin vega ls-15 (these suckers are power hogs!). The thing hits so hard that the only reason i want a sub on my surround system, is .... well I don't think i need one. Anyways, as a college student, this thing is on 24/7. It has yet to faulter or even flinch. I'm not babying it either!

Strength:

Very clean power all the way to max levels. Discrete amplifiers for each of the 5 channels just like receivers that cost 2 to 3 times as much. Great remote.

Weakness:

No pre-outs.

For the past 20 years I have been writing a column on consumer electronics for a leading daily newspaper. I deal with how to buy, use and get the best out of consumer electronics and I help my readers understand new and emerging technologies.

I got the Onkyo TX-DS575X receiver less than a month ago, so will use it for a few months before submitting a performance review. So far it is everything I expected from it and more.

In response to Wayne and his queiry on setting the channel levels so that they are memorized and not lost when the unit is switched off, you have to follow the instructions given at the bottom of page 16 of the owners manual, where it starts off using the SP/SYS setup button. This becomes the default setting. The Ch/Level botton can also be used, but that is for temporary level setting only for listening in specific situations. When the receiver is switched off, it will revert back to the default setting. Hope this helps.

Another problem that some users of this receiver may encounter is when programming the learning remote. When the instructions say press the 'ENT' button, many users assume that it is the "Enter" button. This is not the case, the 'ENT button is located on the remote on the bottom right.

I am using the Onkyo with Audes Blues / Studio / Sentral (Front, rear, center) Speakers from Estonia. The combination is incredible. Over the past 20 years, these speakers are the first ones that have convinced me that the term 'affordable high end' is not a myth. They are made in a factory that used to produce figher jet aircraft parts and the precision engineering shows.

HK and Denon are comparable. Sony and Technics in this price range are all flash and no performance. In this price range, Onkyo is unbeatable.

Strength:

Sharpness and clarity of sound, REMOTE CONTROL!!!

Weakness:

The only weakness (if you want to call it one) is that the volume does not go as loud as other recievers I have had.

I recently bought the sony strde-545 and was very disappointed with the sound at higher volumes and the terrible hiss (and I have good speakers: Bose acoustimass 1500). I returned it after 4 weeks and bought the onkyo based on the reviews here. I LOVE THIS RECIEVER!!!! The sound is unbelievable. The only thing that excited me more than the sharp, clear sound was the remote control. FINALLY, I only have ONE remote control on my coffee table. I was even able to program my old (10yrs) VCR. This is a great reciever for a great price. Nothing bad to say about it. Ok, I wish I had a little more volume, but hey...it does have plenty of power!

Strength:

Clear crisp sound, nice remote

Weakness:

No pre outs

My 575X has served me well for more than a year now. But it's now being replaced with a Denon 3802. And this is mainly because there are no pre outs on the 575X.

Actually, I would've preferred to upgrade to the 797 but it's too expensive here in Europe. In the US, it seems you can get them for US$750-900 but here in Europe the average price is US$1700! What's up with that?! (I hope someone from Onkyo reads this)

As for the 575X, it's excellent value for money. For it's price I don't have any complaints for sound quality because you general get what you pay for. In this case, I think you even get more. I mean it's not even close to high end gear but hook up good speakers (B&W Nautilus 804s) and the 575X seems quite capable (within its own limits, of course). Drums and in particular, cymbals sound very realistic. Acoustic guitars and brass instruments also sound good but some may describe the sound as a bit bright. Vocals are very clear and precise but maybe lacks a little more depth than higher end models. A good friend described the overall sound as a bit "in your face" compared to his warm and refined Denon 3801. But then again, I like "in your face". :-)

A few gripes though:

1) no pre outs - I could greatly improve stereo sound quality by adding a power amplifier for the fronts but... Practically all the Denon models come with pre outs but for Onkyo it starts with the 6x6

2) can't set the distance for individual speakers - L and R speakers need to be the same distance to the sweetspot. this is actually a big deal for me because I don't exactly have an ideal room. Again, this is possible on the Denon.

3) binding posts could be better - this is the same for most AVRs. I'd like to use spade connectors. and the black plastic covers for banana plugs on the 575X aren't exactly easy to remove

4) no direct mode - for 2-channel stereo I prefer bypassing the tone section (treble and bass controls) for a more "unmodified" sound. The 6x6 has this feature.

5) no LFE + main mode - when a subwoofer is installed, output to all channels is cutoff at 80Hz and sent to the sub even if you have large front speakers defined. I would like the whole frequency range sent to my fronts (I don't want to waste my 804s) plus 80Hz and lower sent to the sub at the same time. This is possible on the Denon 3802 but I don't know about their lower models.

Still, the 575X has performed much better than I would have expected for its price range so excellent marks from me.

Strength:

The number of digital inputs, learning remote, clarity of sound, different HT capabilities

Weakness:

the power doesn't seem to be there.

I bought this reciever needing as a final piece to my new home theater system. I teamed it with a Pioneer CD player, Mitubishi DVD, Acoustic Energy Aegis series surround and fronts, and a velodyne sub. The speakers are really high end speakers (check out their reviews here), and I didn't want to spend $1000 on a reciever. I had a buddy who worked at HH gregg and heard tha Onkyo had a great product. It turned out that what I heard was mostly true. I really like the reciever as a home theater unit, but feel it lacks power as an audio listening unit. I am a college student who likes to crank the music when I am not doing serious listening, and I found the power to be lacking in comparison to a friends Kenwood rated at a non continuous 100 wats per channel. He has Infinity RS-8 speakers and they put out more sound than my speakers. I don't know if I have the setup wrong or what, but I just can't seem to get the power that he does, even though this reciever is supposedly better at 70 watts continuous. On top of this, there is enough distortion in my system to have blown my front right speaker whick is rated at 150 watts, while the absolute volume was only turned up to 65. If anyone knows of a solution please let me know. If not, i'm about to spend $900 on an Arcam AVR 100 in an effort to get the volume I want.

Strength:

Clear sound, easy hook up & friendly remote, best for home theatre

Weakness:

Very hard to setup DVD to VHS backup

I use this receiver mainly for HT purpose. Have paradigm speakers as 5.1 system. The effect is very good in my small living room. You can use crystal clear to describe some of the effect (like raining) while earth shaking to describe other (like thundering and bombing). When watching DVD, the s-video connection is much better than composite. Too bad my TV doesn't have component jack.
