Weakness:

channel memory

If anyone is looking for a receiver under $400 this unit from Onkyo is the best out there. The 70 watts rating is very consertive. It kicks out more power than my freinds 100/w per channel technics. It could go up against receivers worth $100 more from sony or yamaha.

REMOTE IS EASY TO USE, GREAT SOUND FROM EACH DSP, EASY HOOKUP, 5 CHANNEL SOUND

Weakness:

I have only had this receiver a few months and I am very pleased with it. I had a Sony STR-DE915 which the front channels went out on right after the warranty expired. I compared fixing that receiver or purchasing a new one. My father has an Onkyo receiver that he sings praise about. I thought I'd look into them and I'm glad I did. Something I missed in the Sony was having sound from all speakers when the program I was listening to was not Dolby Digital. With the 575x's 5-channel stereo option, I have that sound any time I want it. Power is not an issue as I am running a JBL speaker package with it and it sounds great, although I'm about to purchase a set of Polk RM6600's which I think will combine with the 575x to create a wonderful home theatre experience. The remote is great. With the remote, I'm able to control every device I have (cable box, tv, cd player, vcr). This eliminates having 3-5 remotes laying around. This remote will perform every task on my other remotes too. Setting it up is simple. The difference in buying this receiver and fixing my old one was about $350. I'm glad I spent the extra money to get the Onkyo. Now I have what I feel is a superior receiver and a warranty to back it up. I recommend this receiver to anyone regardless of what type of system they have or are building.

Strength:

Price, Quality, Back-Lite learning remote, AC-3, DTS, Speaker terminal, equal power output, sound quality, S-video, 4xDigital input etc...

Weakness:

No on-screen set up, No THX support.

Excellent product ! This AV amp can play music too.
When watching movie with AC-3 or DTS format, not much difference with the Yamaha. But when it comes to music (2ch Stereo mode), it beat the Yamaha miles away. The frequence response is 20Hz-100KHz, which only found in much more expensive AV amp(Denon A-10 or A1-se). With this, the 575x is ready for SACD and DVD audio. Its the best ! But when I say "The Best", thats mean its the best for the price range!(under AUS$1800). Of course, if compare with Marigal or Meridan, it will lose immedialty, but with honor !

On the Onkyo promotion booklet, the spec of TX-DS 575x is very close to the TX-DS 474, only 10 watts /channel more on 575x. But don't be fool by this and hope you can save some bucks. Because the heart of the core-(Transformer) is different. Transformer in the 474 have smaller capacity. Second, the 474 have a serious interference with electric current, TV unit, a lot of hum & hiss could be hear.

Honestly, I'm not sure about TX-DS 676 or 777, may be they a lot better or just bigger output. But the 575x is truly a best-buy. With this low price, Onkyo should be proud of this multi-award winner!

TX-DS 575x report base on my eqquipment:
*Sony K800D DVD player
*B&W CMD series speakers all round
*B&W ASW 1000 Subwoofer
*Audioquest CV-4 with Kimber spade connector
*Audioquest Coral interconnect
*Van den Hul Optocouple toslink
*Tara-Lab D-2 coaxial
*Proton power supply unit

Strength:

Excellent reproduction of clean, crisp, well defined quality sound (even at high volume). Clear lows and highs. Customer service. Binding posts on all channels and S-Video inputs. Ease of use & Set up. Feature rich !! Great Backlit learning remote. Power On Volume. Sleep function. 5 Channel Stereo and Dolby Digital. Value. Solid Build Quality. Doesn't get hot at all. Great Digital Volume Control.

Weakness:

5 Channel Stereo does not work with speakers B on !!! No video/audio inputs on front panel. No bass and trebble control from remote control. No gold colour.

Onkyo definitely got it right with this receiver. IMHO they have made the best-sounding, best featured, best-performing, best-priced receiver on the market.

I was a Denon fan, and when I had to upgrade from an old Pioneer to an AV receiver, I looked around thoroughly and the Denon 1800 was the one I liked best. I used for 3 months, was very pleased with it, but one day, all of a sudden, it broke down. Denon took it away to fix it, two months passed away and they hadn't fixed it yet. I complained to my dealer and they gave me a full refund for the Denon. I had £450 ($720) to spare in a new receiver (I know, rip off UK is far more expensive that the US).

I thought, great !! this time I'm definitely going to get it right. I looked around even more thoroughly, I found this web site and spent hours reading reviews. I considered HK, Nad, Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, Kenwood, and thanks to this site, I thought of Onkyo as well. By that time, the Denon 1801 and the Onkyo 575x had just come out. Those two where the ones I liked best within the budget I had. I went to a shop and compared them both and I could not believe it !! The Onkyo 575x was far superior to the Denon 1801, both in sound quality and features.

I decided to get the Onkyo 575x and it is something I will never regret, I am sure this amp will not be outdated for quite a while. Setting it up took me 3 hours, the 1800 took me about two days !! The interface and remote are intuitive and easy to use.

A BIG plus, the learning remote failed to learn my DVD, video and laserdisc remotes, I called Onkyo in the UK, the day after, I had a new remote at home that worked !!

The only complaint I have about the unit is that 5 Channel Stereo does not work with speakers B on. Other weaknesses I have stated above are just cosmetic, I still rate it as 5 stars. I'm a very pleased customer. I recommend it to anyone, even if it cost $1000. Happy listening !!

Weakness:

None, yet.

My whole Stereo Experience has been a nightmare for the last two weeks. I decided to upgrade when my old Pro Logic Sony STR-D 655 dropped the left channel. I like Sony products, and own a bunch of them. I picked up a STR-DE 545, had all the features I expected for $300. Unfortuneately, this unit produced an unbelievable amount of background hiss. Sony told me to move the amp 10ft from the tv, and couldn't explain why my old amp didn't have the problem. This person told me that a tech would call me with an answer, never did. So ends my loayalty to Sony.
Next, I tried a Kenwood VR-407, for around the same price as the Sony. Nice unit, sounds great. What a pain in the ass this thing was. The remote was too small for my big fat fingers. To adjust tone controlls required a menu, and was confusing.
At the store, the sales guy pushed the Onkyo on me after I brought back the Sony. When I decided to hate the Kenwood, I figured the $100 price difference was a nickel and dime issue, and bought the Onkyo. I was worried about shelf life of the brand since a couple friends in college had Onkyo amps that caught fire. I don't think that is a problem now.
I'm glad I tried several brands. I wanted a Yamaha, but the bang for the buck isn't as good. This Onkyo is truly amazing! Sound for all, CD, DVD, and Video is great. The 70watts plays like the 100watts from Sony and Kenwood. Maybe the industry should standardize the way they rate this stuff.

Strength:

Clear, rich, and well defined sound. Much appreciated upgrades from the older 575 model.

Weakness:

Must use relatively efficient speakers otherwise volume must be turned up fairly high to get "reference" level sound.

I bought this receiver looking to upgrade my cheap introduction to Dolby Digital surround sound from my Aiwa receiver bought at Best Buy. Onkyo has definitelly delivered in terms of sound quality and features, and I understand why they have such a good reputation for quality home theater gear. I never realized how much of a difference could be heard upgrading from a cheaper generic Dolby Digital receiver to one that is made with quality in mind and made from a quality company. The Onkyo TX-DS575X is my first "real" receiver. It's features include DD/DTS/Pro-Logic 96khz/24 bit decoding (my first DTS receiver!), binding posts for all channels (the older 575 model had binding posts for only the front left, right, and center), 4 digital inputs (2 coax, 2 opt), S-Video switching (the older 575 does not feature this), 5-Channel Stereo, Lucasfilm Re-EQ, and a number of other features including multiple DSP modes, a macro-programmable remote, and other video switching capabilities. The improvement in overall sound quality is overwhelming. Detail is clearly defined, sounds are heard which couldn't be heard before. There is nearly twice as much sound coming out of my speakers. My only gripes are that future owners of this model must remember to use efficient speakers with this receiver. I use Infinity Interlude speakers which are fairly inefficient, so the volume must be turned up higher to get that reference level, or movie theater type of sound (Volume goes from about -61 to +18db max, I go to around +5 to +10 db for "reference level" sound). Bass is a little lite (probably still getting used to the better quality considering the Aiwa put out way too much boomy bass), and, sound can be a little harsh at very high levels, as can any receiver. These minor gripes are no big deals, considering the improvement in sound quality and overall dynamic range. The design is well built, and the controls and functions are easy to learn and use. This is simply one of the best receivers in this price range (I bought mine for about $400 from BPAV). I can't recommend this receiver enough for those looking to get into Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 surround sound. I can only imagine what the higher models (TX-DS676,777,989)improve upon this model.

Strength:

True wattage per channel(70W @ 8ohm), 5 ch stereo for listening to music, 8 distinguishable and appropriate DSP modes, easy set up, fabulous learning remote controller.

Weakness:

None

After a month of research, careful study of reviews @ audioreview and audition with similar speakers at good guys and Circuit City, I concluded to buy Onkyo 575X.

Eventhough Yamaha 596 is a close to this one, it could not in fact come on par with Onkyo in my views. Features in Onkyo that beat Yamaha 596:
- 5 ch stereo
- 8 DSP modes, Yamaha's 30 DSP modes would be too many to distinguish from and not practical. For listening to music, 5 ch stereo beats those 30 modes!
- remote is learning and can be programmed for other home theater components.
- sound clearity and LFE have been outstanding.
- Cinema Re-EQ mode is cool to ge the same effects as theater without increasing to much volume
Sony STRDE845 is rated 100W but hardly delivers worth 70W (which it should as 100W peak == 70.7W rms)

At this price point this is the best Rx one can get!

After months of research I concluded that this receiver has to be the best value for your money. I the units I took into consideration were the denon avr 1801,yamaha 5250 and the dedon 2800. This was the receiver that satisfied my ears the most. It's easy to use and it sounds beautiful. I'll recomend it to anyone who's in the market for a unit under$450.

Strength:

Very musical receiver, great value

Weakness:

all were solved with the "x" model, such as inherent hiss and lack of S video connections

Lets get the basic info out fo the way; this receiver sounds beautiful and is a bargin at $399. I decided on this receiver based on the fact that gets the job done on the HT side, but really shines on the music cd reproduction which is important to me. Sure the Yamaha stuff has all the DSP fields in the world, but I still listen to music in 2 channel stereo, so you guys who like to hear Jazz Club altered sound need not continue reading.

Okay, here's the scoop. I live about two miles from the Crutchfield Outlet store in Harriosnburg Va so natually I buy most of my stuff there. I bought A TX-DS575 last december and was immediately impressed with it's sound. I was a little bummed that it didn't have S Video ins/outs, but at less than $400 I thought it was a steal, and still do.

However, there was a constant hiss that many of you mentioned in your review of the non-X model. It bugged the hell out of me to the point of me taking the reciever back to Crutchfield over my lunch today. Without any questions, they handed me a brand new 575x. It is silent. It rocks. It has S Vid connections. And as a bonus, the remote is illuminated!

Thanks Crutchfield. And thanks Onkyo for making a receiver that is easy to use in HT applications and sounds frickin' great for music.

Sound qualities: spacious and detailed highs without the "crispness" found in other sub-$500 receivers and very tight low end (you'll need to crank up the bass knob a bit to find that warm midrange and subtle but sweet bottom end.

I listen mostly to pop-alt music such as Dave Matthews Band, Fuel, and Gov't Mule. Current system includes OLD Polk Monitor 5s, Polk CS2 center (only current thing I could find that would somewhat match my old 5s), a Paradigm PS1000 sub, a Toshiba 6109 DVD, and 32" TV. I guess their are better sounding receivers (if you twice as much) and certainly better sounding seperates (I want a Marantz MM9000 and AV9000 bad!), so I'll give it 4 on sound, and definetly a 5+ on value! Cheers.

Cannot comprehend why anyone would give this product a bad
review. For the price this unit cannot be beat. I am using
this unit with Bose AM-7's and AM-3's and am getting excellent results. The Onkyo increased the performance of the Bose speakers dramtically over the previous Sony. Had thought I was either going to have to replace the Bose speakers or at least get a powered sub, but am now pleased after hooking them to the Onkyo. In "Saving Private Ryan",
I could feel the tank coming down my hall. Great product for the money.
