Strength:

more power than rated, learning remote, looks good

Weakness:

LOUD HISS!!! Not enough power for my speakers

Well, I have had this receiver for about a week and sent it back. There was a horrible LOUD hiss playing through my Klipsch KLF20 speakers. I after hours of researching and troubleshooting, I determined that it was the receiver. I dont know if it was a factory defect or just a noisy receiver.

I was impressed with the power output of the rated 70 watts. However, it was not near enough to power my speakers. I had to turn the volume up to around 75% of the max. At this volume, the sound was distorted along with the unbearable hiss. Volume at lower levels did not produce much sound at all and certainly NO bass whatsoever.

I am so disappointed with this receiver that I am not going to exchange it for another or upgrade to a better model, I will just go with a different brand. I will never buy another Onkyo product EVER!

Strength:

Very clean sound, learning remote, DTS Capability

Weakness:

None I can determine

I was initially going to just replace my AC300 decoder with the AC500 to get DTS capability. After looking at the going prices, I decided to invest the $ in a new DTS receiver. I was initially interested in the new Technics SA-DA8 receiver but could not find it locally to listen to nor could I find any reviews.

I decided on the Onkyo based on the strong response here and that Bose stores use the Onkyo. Compared to what I had, I've found I'm picking up many more discrete sounds such as crickets, breathing sounds, and other similar types of background sounds, regardless of the source (VHS, DVD DTS/Dolby, Laser Disc). It compliments my Bose speakers and adds a new dimension to my surround system.

I was contemplating buying the Titanic DTS CD so I played my analog Titanic CD for a musical test and it sounded so much better than before, I decided I didn't need to spend the additional $25.

The other great feature is the learning remote! It has successfully replaced 5 different remotes without any degradation of features/functions.

A great piece of gear for the price.

Strength:

Good quality construction, excellent decoding, immaculate sound quality, minimal distortion

I had bought a Sony STR-DE835 a couple month earlier and was
relatively satisfied with it. But when I heard my father-in-law talking about this Onkyo, I immediately became interested. He is a man of great knowledge, researches products before he buys, ask questions, and only buys things of premium quality. He told me about YourInsider.com which listed the TX-DS575x for $389.99. I instantly purchased it and had it delivered next day air.
I opened the box and this thing was more beautiful than it had been in the store before. I took it home, hooked it up and noticed an immediate difference in sound quality and presentation. First of all, this thing is built like a tank, very sturdy construction and a very simple front panel design. There is not one button on the front or on the remote that the receiver does not need or use.
They don't bother with the remote controlled volume knob, which is something that is easily breakable. The volume level is shown on the display for more precise volume control.
The receiver will work in any room, it is not an eyesore. It is my belief that it will last a very long time and will never disappoint. Best of all it is affordable, even at a retail price of $500 it is a great deal for what your getting. This is an audiophile grade product and can be enjoyed by audiophiles and beginners that expect sound
quality and ease of use. All in all, this receiver is the best out there under $500, and even outperforms those above $500.

Strength:

Multiple Digital outs, clarity, functionality

Weakness:

Plain looking

I had the Sony and quite frankly it hissed badly. I returned it immediately. The sales associate pointed me in the right direction. Onkyo.

I've had this product and have experienced nothing negative at all.

You should hear my house with an inexpensive Sony WM40 subwoofer! Oh yes its got bass thump! Even my Cerwin Vegas sound much better then with the Sony 835.

I highly recommend this product, the digital sound will blow you away!

Strength:

Great all around receiver.

Weakness:

remote control

Great all around receiver. Using the unit with CSW Surround system w/ powered sub (home theater). Excellent sound, especially with DVD (Toshiba) and CD's (Sony). At first a little aprehensive about purchasing Onkyo - liked Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, etc. Functionality sold me, especially with the amount of versatility within backplane (multiple bitstream and digital inputs) and A/B speaker option (not available on many competing models in similar price range).
Very glad I made the decision to go with Onkyo. Remote control a little clunky and complex. Also, hope that the remote was RF instead of IR - need to purchase separate IR station since unit sits behind entertainment center doors. Very happy with purchase and recommend this product.

Strength:

Remote is awesome, sounds better than my Kenwood VR-357

Weakness:

Doesn't route RCA video to S-Video output

The remote that comes with this unit is quite simply the best remote I've ever used. I've tried a wide variety of universal remotes, but none are as easy to program and use as this remote. The sound quality is good, especially with my high effeciency speakers. Really the only complaint I have is with the video routing...it routes S-Video signals to the S-Video out and composite signals to the composite out. MY VCR doesn't have S-Video, so I have to use either the front jacks on my TV or use the good-ol co-ax connection. :-/

Strength:

Features, sound quality, construction, price, multiple S-Video inputs.

Weakness:

For a very large room this is a little underpowered. Remote lacks some functions.

This is my first Dolby Digital receiver so I wasn't looking to mortgage my house to buy it. I demoed this unit along with a comparable Sony, Marantz and Yamaha and this receiver was head and shoulders above the rest. It is simple to use and configure. It is solid as a rock. If you crank the volume to full there is no hiss whatsoever. Some people may feel that this receiver lacks some power. This is certainly true if your home-theatre is in a very large open room. In most locations though, this receiver has plenty volume to go around.

Overall, for the money I paid I could not be happier. I have heard slightly better receivers before but they were all $1000+. If you are looking for an affordable mid-level receiver then I suggest you look no further.

Alfredo-how can you complain about the 575x not having multiroom capabilities? Before you bought it, didn't you research it's features? 70w/ channel is not impressive-you know that. The 575x is a conservative, solid amp, not a miracle receiver. 5 stars all the way baby!

Strength:

Lots of power, Great Remote, Quiet Operation, Easy to use

Weakness:

wish it had pre-outs and main-ins for all channels, but for this price what can you expect.

I have been into home audio for many years, however, this is my first a/v receiver. My earlier systems included components by Adcom, and Harmon/Kardon. When I decided to set up a "budget" home theater system, I immediately went looking for Harmon/Kardon as they were in my earlier home audio days, one of the "best buys" for reasonably priced good performing home audio. My dealer showed me Harmon/Kardon's latest offerings, but also recommended that I consider the Onkyo. He said that it was of similar quality and offered a better feature set. I normally believe that you get what you pay for, and almost went with H/K regardless of his recommendation. After doing a little more research (especially of the reviews from this website) I elected to go with the Onkyo.

I can only say good things about the performance and features of this receiver. For it's price range, I doubt there is a "better value" available. Build quality is solid, remote is awesome, and performance a feature set is above average.

Don't get me wrong, my Adcom pre-amp and mono-block amplifiers kicked the crap out of this receiver, but this receiver costs less than the speaker cable, and interconnects I used in my Adcom system!

I highly recommend this receiver to anyone in the market for a reasonably priced a/v unit! My only wish is that Onkyo made a step up receiver that didn't jump in cost quite as much as the TXDS676.

On a negative note, Onkyo could of done a better job with the owners manual. It is a little confusing, and doesn't do a very good job of explaining some of the setup features. Also, it would have been nice if they had done some kind of explanation of the specifications of their bass manangement options (I ended up having to call tech-support to find out what I wanted to know.)

Great job Onkyo!
