Strength:

I like the remote, sounds pretty good as long as there are no pauses in action

Weakness:

Has to be the center channel hiss and hum

I gave Onkyo the benefit of the doubt because I'm a fan. I've had four 676 recievers and all have had the center channel problem. I keep trying because of the mixed reviews here and I REALLY wanted this reciever. It does hiss/hum, all the ones I've had. And its not the the speaker connectors or wires (all top of the line Monster) that I replaced twice.

Furthermore, If you hope to get help from Onkyo USA, don't hold your breath. I've been sending email and leaving voicemail for 4 weeks, and no one has responded. By the way, what's the deal with perpetual voicemail at a tech service site? Anyway, customer service bites and this may be enough to dissuade you from buying Onkyo.

I'm debating whether or not to try another one. If you can deal with the center channel hum go for it. I give it a value of 4, but overall, because of Onkyo total disregard for the customer, 3.

And if anyone has found or knows of solution... PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Thanks.

Strength:

Sound clarity, 5 channel stereo, plenty of audio & video inputs.

Weakness:

None that I can see or hear.

What can I say about this receiver? First of all build quality is tops. After having owned 2 previous Yamaha receivers the RX-V395 which I am using in my bedroom &
an older stereo non prologic receiver which I gave to my dad the Onkyo's quality is as good or better than the Yamaha's. One thing that has really impressed me about this receiver is the clarity and lack of distortion at high volumes. I own the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble 3 system with the powered bass cube 8 and I could not be happier. I have listened to jazz, alternative, acoustic & classical guitar, classic rock etc and the Onkyo has not dissapointed
one bit. I just hooked up my DVD changer a couple weeks ago
and watching movies & experiencing dolby digital sound was mind blowing. The channel separation in dolby digital & 5
channel stereo is first rate. I would probably have purchased another Yamaha receiver but the 5 channel stereo
feature on the Onkyo is what did it for me. I did consider
the Denon AVR 2800 which is probably about equal with this receiver including 5 channel stereo. Plus retail on each of
these receivers is right around $799.00. I picked up mine for $599.00 open box.The guy had this one for about a week
and upgraded to the TX-DS777 (wanted THX). In closing this is a first rate receiver for listening to music or home theater enjoyment and I would highly recommend this anyone
shopping for an AV receiver in this price range.
PS. I have not heard any of the so called humm or hiss that
previous reviewers have complained about.

Strength:

See Below!

Weakness:

Depth of unit (cabinet measures 16", not including knobs & connectors)

After living with the 676 for almost a month now, I have an even higher opinion of the receiver! The sonic superiority over competitive units is quite evident. The last Onkyo I had was a TX-SV636 about 3 years ago, and I thought it was "the cat's jammies" but the tuner has been greatly improved, the addition of s-video inputs and outputs, balanced channel power (non-configuration amp), direct signal option (no tone or subwoofer cross-over processing), elimination of the useless multi-room function, and even more high current ability! The amp has more balls than a "Ten-Peckered Billy Goat" and drives problem speaker loads better than anything Denon could ever think of producing, period!
If anyone is in the market for a tremendous, high quality home theater receiver, you must audition the 676. If you dont, you'll miss out on the best value in the audio market now! Just make sure you dont get an early model with the ground filter problem. Buy from an authorized dealer and not a cheapie on the Net.

Strength:

Great learning remote, bags of power and great clean sound

Weakness:

Ummm....help! Svideo and standard video wont live together

Just briefly, had the Pioneer for one night which I upgraded from an older Pioneer 536 with learning remote. The 608 didnt have a learning remote so I went from one remote to five...unacceptable!, so back I went to the store and I decided to get serious and by the Onkyo which is superb in every aspect and has NO NOISE, mine must be new year 2000 stock. This amp rocks! I agree with everyones negative and positive points below apart from the hum and hiss thread.

However I am in need of some help from fellow owners, I have a cable feed and vhs which both use standard video inputs, I also have a dvd which uses svideo for its input. My TV is Grundig with twin scart inputs, I use a converter to give me a choice of svideo and standard video on the one scart. My problem is depending on which position I have the OSD selector set at, One of my two groups of inputs (dvd or vhs/cable) is plagued with a bad (unwatchable) picture, the only way I have found around this problem is not to have both monitor outs plugged in at the same time which is far from ideal. My old vsx608 could accept a mixture of both and I was able to output the picture via svideo or standd video to the tv without having to replug cords.

Strength:

The power source

Weakness:

too big in size

I was leary about buying this unit because all of the hiss/hum problems that I read in other reviews. I also understood that the problem was being addressed by Onkyo....So when I came across a refurb, I was confident that the unit was ok. (and what's wrong with saving a few bucks anyhow?) Other than that, I had no idea how it would compare with some of the other brands with (so-called) higher watts per channel. Let me tell you....DON'T get fooled. I was thoroughly impressed on how much better it sounded next to the others I've heard. Some people would argue that the Monster cables and Klipsch speakers make the difference....I dunno. All I do know is that I couldn't ask for anything more for the price. I Give 'em a 5!

Strength:

Learning remote, great sound, DTS, assignable digital inputs and assignable video outs. S-video switching

Weakness:

a little hiss, but not bad.

I think some of these guys need to go buy $2000 dollar receivers. They are exagerating the hiss problem. For the price ($565 from onecall) this is a great receiver. Tons of inputs and outputs. The Dobly digital surround sound is great. You have to play the Matrix on this thing! The on screen displays a cool. I almost bought the Denon avr2800 but decided on the Onkyo because of the learning remote. The Onkyo 777 is about $200 more but I don't think its worth it unless you just HAVE to have a THX certified reciever.

Strength:

Separation,clarity, easy setup

Weakness:

Weak rear channels

No hiss, no hum. Pure and clean. Spent $220 for Monster cables. Seems to have paid off. Complete setup in about 5 hours. Cant get OSD to come on source channel but does work on separate video channel. Not using 5.1 yet,(I haven't got my subw yet)but huge differnce in what I was listening to with my JVC. Lots of I/O's, good front panel, easy operation with about 30 minutes of study. Wish it had at least some kind of graphic equalizer instead of just treb and bass.
Only problem, rear channels dont seem to be as strong others in DPL but can adjust that out with direct channel adjustments(great feature!). For $600, I could do no better.Compared to Denon and Yahama. No difference I could tell. Onkyo is cleaner sound. I just hope longterm I have no tech problems. You guys scare the heck out me with your horror stories! Some one email me if you are haveing the same rear channel problem. Thanks AUDIO REVIEW. Great site!

Strength:

Inputs and Outputs -- Good Clean Sound -- Ease of use (my wife can operate it easily)

Weakness:

A little large

Sound tested several units and really liked the way Onkyo sounded vs Sony/Harmon Kardon/etc. Very clean and sound. No crosstalk or hiss issues described in earlier article -- may have all current units fixed. Step up ot the 777 if you want optical output, more power, THX, and additional listening modes.

Strength:

Super sound quality, pleanty of power, tons of inputs & outputs. Lots of features on remote

Weakness:

Slight hiss in the center channel when power on and nothing playing. Buttons on remote very close together hard to find in dark sometimes by feel although the keys will light if desired.

I have done tons of research and for the price $565.00 from onecall.com it is a GREAT value. I have seen the exact receiver at local electronic stores for $999.00

Strength:

Power, Sound clarity (even at high volume!), 5 Channel stereo, plenty of audio/video hookups

Weakness:

No memory function for Bass, treble & volume for each channel (video, cd, tuner etc). Some background hiss. Brief instruction manual

A overall great receiver! I took back my JVC 888 and replaced it with this Onkyo (My JVC had the excessive hiss and a annoying "buzz" in the right surround channel - went through two different receivers before deciding to give up on the JVC). The Onkyo has great sound clarity even at high volume. Movies on satellite have been great!!The digital surround is crystal clear. i have the Infinity RS-8's, Infinity CC-3 center and Infinity RS-3's for rear. This receiver rocks! Can't wait to purchase a DVD player and crank up the volume! I am very suprised to see the overall low rating on this receiver. Other than the brief instruction manual, this is one great receiver. The slight hiss (which i have found in all of the receivers including the HK's)is hardly noticeable unless you have your ear parked on the speaker! I paid too much for this receiver at Circuit City....and I'm still happy! I have to give it 5 stars anyway just due to the fact the overall rating of this receiver should be much higher.
