Strength:

Great sound, All the funtions that a reciever of ths kind should have at a very good price

Weakness:

None

I think that the people (I actually think it is one person or at most two people) writing bad reviews about this receiver are jealous since they OVER PAID for a Yamaha A2 or an expensive Denon and now someone else down the road has similar sound (Yamaha and Denon do make good products) at a better price. I had a very (and I mean very) slight hiss on my centre channel (This is because of the WRAT technology - Most other amps don't hiss because they are not capable to amplify to such a high frequency - This means that all those people with their non hissing amps are missing something - Not to mention that they are not ready for DVD audio or SACD). This did however disappear after I moved my TV and the receiver more than a (as in 1) meter apart. Now it is gone. I use very good KEF speaker and good cabling with this system. This is a great receiver and I would buy it again if I had to choose again. DON'T LET ANYBODY ELSE TELL YOU (YES - YOU !!!!) WHAT TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY - Listen to the system yourself and then decide - I have only GOOD things to say about this receiver. But as with most things in life PERSONAL taste and preference have a HUGE impact on such decisions - Have a great time listening and remember - IT IS YOUR MONEY - SO YOU DECIDE

Strength:

power, DTS, on screen display

Weakness:

remote a LITTLE difficult to work with

I think all the people who are finding this hiss, MUST be smoking crack! OR, they got defective or overseas models I bought mine from Circuit City (they will match bestpriceaudiovideo.com's price of $579) about a month or two ago. I have noticed NO hiss, and in fact have enjoyed the truly warm, rich sound from my reciever since the second I hooked it up. The power is great fro running mid-fi speakers, and the features on this reciever are hard to beat for the money. I was looking at Yamaha and Denon for a LONG time before deciding that the Onko was the best buy for my money. Yeah, the remote could be better...but who's couldn't! BUY THIS RECIEVER...and don't listen to anyone about this hiss problem. I've found that if Onkyo made a mistake and you are willing to be a "little" patient with them, they will fix any problem you have. They want you to have a gret sounding system as much as you do!

Strength:

Excellent build quality, every bell and whistle except THX, on screen setup, incredible power, fantastic back lit learning remote

Weakness:

typically poor Japanese manual does not explain anything particularly well

Haven't had enough time with the receiver to write a full review but felt compelled to respond to "rkynch" from Ohio. Try e-mailing this yahoo. I received return mail with no such user. The guy who trashed the Onkyo used a fake e-mail address!! What's he hiding from?

All this talk about hiss and hum. Do what I did. Listen to the exact unit in the store with the exact speaker setup (NHT SuperOnes, SuperOne XUs, SuperCenter, SW2P sub) before purchasing the receiver. I did and guess what? Performed flawlessly in the store and at home (with pitifully poor cables and setup!). There is no doubt in my mind that the one star reviews for this receiver are completely and utterly bogus.

Frankly, the big problem with on line shopping is that, in an effort to get the lowest rock bottom price, we are becoming too reliant on on line reviews. You've gotta listen before you buy! And no, I do not sell audio equipment for a living.

Now, as for the receiver. Although the manual made setup a bit confusing at first, the on screen setup works like a charm. Great back lit learning remote completely negates the need for a third party universal remote. Easily learned my other component and TV remotes. Inputs are well laid out. Binder posts for all cables. Coaxial and optical digital inputs. Lots of pre-outs for additional amplification.

As for the sound. I must confess that the 777 had a warmer, more spacious feeling to it but I could not justify the additional cost for an incrementally small improvement in sound (in the real world most of us have budgets and in the Great White North, prices tend to be considerably higher than those I see quoted on this web site by other reviewers). Tons of good, clean power. Able to handle any and all transient peaks The Matrix could throw at it. I honestly can't see needing any more power or features than this very fine piece of audio equipment has on tap!

Humm and Hiss, Remote

I was really excited when I first purchased this reciever the unit at my local CC had no humm or hiss and sounded great. I hooked it up and sure enough Humm and Hiss, I called Onkyo and they were aware of the problem and said that I should take it to a repair shop and problem would be fixed in 10-15 minutes. Well I have a real problem with taking a new piece of equipment to the shop the day I buy it. I do not feel that the consumer should have to be inconvienced for a defect that is known to the manufacturer.
I took my unit back and to CC, exchanged it for the HK AVR 500. I will not buy from a company that is knowingly selling defective product. This was a disappointing experience for me and probably my last purchase of any Onkyo product. BTW I am very happy with my HK AVR500

Weakness:

Center humming noise

I bought this from a local CC store. I could hear some hiss noise in the store but no humming noise. But this is not a problem since any amplifer in this price range has some noise in normal listening volume. So I brought it home and quickly set it up. After I finished everything and put the receiver back into the entertaiment center, the humming noise appeared from the center channel that could be heard 4 feet away. The noise became smaller if I took the receiver out of the shelf or turn off the TV. I concluded that the TX-DS676 receiver is not properly shielded against TV interference. Since I don't have a seperate audio shelf that can be put far away from the TV, I have to return the Onkyo and look for other receiver that has better noise performance. Music, DD and DTS of 676 sound on par with Denon 2800 but HK 65 sound slightly clearer. Remote control had problem learning my multifunction TV remote, 2 year old VCR remote and DBS set-top.

If anyone bought this one or the 777, let me know if you felt that there was or wasn't any diff in sound and power between the two. Please and thanks.

I might get the 777, only for THX. Does anyone think it's not worth it. Please respond. masaad@gtn.net

Strength:

Smooth refined sound, very dynamic and powerful. Build a quality.

Weakness:

None for the price.

This review is primarily written for audiophiles who are considering getting a surround receiver for their video system. Most audiophiles would agree the sound quality (not quantity) of DVDs are not up the quality of CDs, and therefore have separate systems; one for music and one for movies.

Firstly, I cannot believe the sound quality of this receiver/processor. I used to sell Onkyo equiptment about 15 years ago, and I thought that it was decent mid-fi with better construction quality than the competition. I bought the receiver for my video system, never expecting the sound quality in the 2 channel stereo mode.

The pre-amp/dac/amp is amazingly close to my dedicated stereo system, which consists of a BAT preamp, Conrad Johnson tube amp and Pioneer DV-09 (around $8,500 retail!). Even though it is only rated at 85 watts per channel, it drives my Magnepan 1.6QRs effortlessly and smoothly. What you do not get is the air and ambience you get with the tube gear; the decay of cymbals and other instruments are truncated and the dynamics within the midrange are also diminished. But the overall sound is warm and smooth and not tinny, even on movie soundtracks. Simply put my reference system costs 10 times more the the Onkyo, but is not 10 times better. On superbly recorded material my ref. system is easily twice as good and for average material maybe about 20% better. But, on harsh material (most movie soundtracks), the Onkyo is more listenable.

While the surround mode is not the equal of the above, it does a decent job, comparable to all of the receivers I have heard in this price range. If you want better surround the Lex or Citation, will steer the rear and side channels (Onkyo does not have side channel surrounds) faster and more seamlessly. Yes, you will have to pay about four times the price of the Onkyo, and you will still have to buy 7 channels (3 front, 2 side and 2 rear) of amplification. I'm almost tempted to say that to do so would be a waste of money and therefore foolish.

The overall build quality is superb. When you consider that you get 2 coxial digital inputs (plus one optical), 5-way binding posts on all speaker outputs (including an extra set for the front), analog inputs and analog outputs, and a user friendly back-lit remote control, the Onkyo buries the competition. Also, I did not have any hum problems and I agree with what another reviewer had written; the culprit is usually is a ground loop problem or video rf contamination.

In comparing the other Onkyo models: I woundn't bother with the 575 because it lacks the analog outputs and back lit remote. Same for the 777, as it has jumpers between the pre outs and main ins (which could affect the sound quality), and the THX certification does not mean better sound and in some cases degrades the sound. I also suspect it uses the same power supply as the 676, but is goosed to get a higher amplifier rating. Check for yourself, they are both about the same weight.

I'm still shaking my head wondering what makes it sound so good for so little. Maybe if the Onkyo stuff was as good 15 years ago, as it is today, I'd still be in the stereo business. Then again, I couldn't sell anything in good conscience for more money. In the 650.00 price range this is a no brainer.

Strength:

Great power, many output/input options

Weakness:

Strong hiss and size. Onkyo keeps making them bigger and bigger. OK sound

I've owned Onkyo products in the past and for the most part, very satisfied. When I decided to upgrade, I felt Onkyo would be on my short list. After purchasing the 676, I was completely dissappointed with the music sound quality. Too muffled. HT was average. Hiss is very apparent and annoying. Going to try to exchange for a Denon or Yamaha.
