Strength:

Clarity, THX, DTS, Solid Construction, feature set.

Weakness:

TV causes hum in center channel, and all channels have hiss.

I have the DTR-7, which is the Integra version of the 777. I also get hum in the center channel whenever the TV is on. I also get his from all channels. This only happens when in a surround/dsp mode and doesn't affect stereo or direct mode of course. Onkyo states there is a known problem with some of the DTR-x units that is being investigated, but it would seem that the 777 is affected as well. I have moved the TV and Reciever as far away as possible, but the hum and hiss remain. Unfortunately I can't reconfigure the position of the receiver in my rack. Three stars due to the hiss and hum.

Strength:

THX cerified, subwoofer level test tone, programable and friendly remote control, Direct mode (this mode delivers pure sound with the minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

I had the Yamaha RX-V995 but it didn't sound as natural as my 4 years old Onkyo prologic integrated amplifier. Few weeks ago I sold it and buy the Onkyo TX-DS777. It has a cristal clear sound and more fixtures than the Yamaha including a better remote control. I believe the Onkyo is the best receiver under $1000.00. Very much better than the Yamaha, in my opinion.

Strength:

THX Select, DD and DTS, preouts for all channels, 5.1 channel input, 5 video inputs, 4 digital inputs (2 coax, 2 opt), 1 digital optical output

Weakness:

None So Far, the recall of this product didnt bother me. Onkyo reps were very professional with me.

Bought my unit from Sound City for $749 + $20 for shipping. Great buy!!!
The TXDS-777 has every feature you might want plus a few to boot. What other receiver at this level has THX Select for this price? The power rating of 5 x 105 watts/channel is great as well. This receiver has a solid build quality, like other Onkyo products of the past. If you want more I hear Onkyo is working on a TXDS-979 model to replace its 939 model. Probably will have more power and THX Ultra.

Strength:

Warmness of Sound, Remote Commander, Ergonomics, Easy to Understand and a Joy to Program On Screen Display, Build Quality.

Weakness:

I would love the remote joystick to have been a rubber topped material. I think that a receiver at this level should also have gold plated terminals. I know there is probably zero benefit but it just makes it seem nicer none the less.

I checked out the Denon unit and was pretty turned off right away by it's usablility and overall asthetics. I made a purchase of the Yamaha unit and auditioned it in my home for a couple of weeks before I ran across the Onkyo unit. I was very unhappy with the Yamaha Remote and the overally layout and control of the receiver. The sound that it made was a sure pleasure and it's only weakness in sound would be that it's a little too brite. That's where the Onkyo has an edge. It's sound is much warmer so listening doesn't get too tiring. The learing remote is well thought out and performs very good. I of course like to pick things apart and would love for the Onkyo guys to have made a rubber coated joystick that would be easier to grip and use and I really prefer a bright blue backlight rather than the green Onkyo used. The back panel connection layout is pretty well thought out and easy to understand. I'm very happy with it and am sure it will be a part of my home entertainment center for years to come. I purchased the 777 along with an Onkyo 600 6 disc DVD from Larry at OneCall.com and got a pretty good price and service from those guys. Other components in my system.... Sony XBR61 TV, Polk RT800 Fronts, Polk CS400 Center, Polk RT/FX Surrounds, Polk PSW140 Powered Sub, Hughes DSS (not dooby digital capable), Mitsubishi VCR, non S-VHS :( If you guys have not heard Saving Private Ryan in DTS format you are really missing something that I had never experienced. What a Treat... Take Care

Strength:

Proof you do not have to spend a fortune to get Dolby Digital surround sound, or THX certification. Great remote.

Weakness:

Merely adequete ambience modes

This receiver puts all that is good into one package. The output power capabilities are outstanding. 105w for "EACH" channel driven. Vey important for people to know when looking for a receiver what the ratings are for each channel, not the whole amp section. Very flexible speaker switching and other controls, as well as being a very quirk free performer. Also is futuristic ready in being DVD Audio capable with 6 cannel outputs. A must for DVD Audio. With a correctly setup system containing a powerd subwoofer, you should be able to generate full cinemalike levels, which sound very loud at home. A good point for somebody living in a small house or an apartment Best Regards to all.

Strength:

SEXY sound when working, Remote, Coax Digital Out, Power, Price, 5 ch stereo

Weakness:

Quality Control, Looks, Cannot lead composite video in -> S-video out

Well, what can I say? It sounds better than the Denon 3300 when it's WORKING, But I had 3 676s before then decided to go to the 777 to see if I could get a working unit. After about 45 days, I popped in a CD (Static-X: Wisconsin Death Trip) and pumped the volume to 0 Relative. About 50 Seconds into Track 4, I noticed terrible distortion in the Left Front Channel. It scared the crap out of me, I thought my speaker was gonna blow. (I think it damaged my speaker however, because the speaker had an odd burning smell to it afterwards.) I tried it with another speaker, same thing. It distorted at volume levels above -5 no matter what on that part in the song. I called Onkyo and was told I would have to pay shipping to Columbus if I wanted it fixed. I took it to the dealer, they told me they'd send it there for me, but I was SOL for a return since it was past 30 days. I am now awaiting my repaired unit. I give the sound a 5, but the reliability a -84. Oh, fyi, my setup was a pioneer DVC-302D connected by coax digital, Monster speaker XP cable (I got it for free, I wouldn't pay for that trash) run to an Energy Take 5 set.

Just incredible sound, puts you in the midle of the movie. Remote for all equipment. Ultraeasy use. Put some rock, and turn it up. The 5ch stereo dsp mode is indredible for fillin the house of music. When seeing a movie just click in the thx button, this machine will do select the input type and draw a perfect scenario.
