Strength:

Best under $1000 Receiver on the market.

Weakness:

Remote can be hard to use at first.

I manage a Audio/Video store in Tennessee; Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony is all you hear from some of these rednecks. When my store started carring the Onkyo line the first words out of my customers mouth would be "Onklo what?" Well to make a looooong story short education was key now we have a hard time keeping this unit in stock due to word of mouth. And as for the hiss that some of you so called "experts" say you hear, USE BETTER CABLES AND WIRES! We have never had this problem.

Strength:

THX certified receiver...Different volume display method setups, and INCREDIBLE power...

Weakness:

NONE....

You've gotta listen this receiver...Hearing is believing...Don't just listen to what other users say...Take the time and go into your nearest home theater retail store and take a listen (Hopefully they will have a TX-DS777 open for display purposes). You won't be dispppointed!!! Also, take your time through the set up process. It may seem tedious at first but well worth the effort!! Utilize the OSD (on-screen display) function. It makes it much easier...Then sit back and enjoy!!!

Strength:

Clean, clear, and warm power-with plenty of headroom to spare. Excellent Value, epecially for the price.

Weakness:

Maybe one...this thing makes me want to spend more money on real QUALITY interconnects! Wife is not pleased with this; but she too, really likes the unit. ( which is always a good thing, right guys?) Mine is pretty whisper-quiet too. No hum.

Audiophile? Me? Well, after 25 years of performing pro music
in studio and live events, I may qualify. I know what to listen for. But I don't own a $25,000 home system, as you can tell by my purchase...
After deciding my brand new Pioneer unit was unfit for active duty after three weeks ( I hated this VSX508 thing...strong words yes, but really hated it...I submitted a review on it elsewhere on this website);I did a lot of soul-searching on price point, and decided to apply a very novel theory I learned the hard way, years ago. Generally you get what you pay for. Knowing this, and applying the concept, are two differnt things-the latter can be painful. But anyway, after doing much research on $1000+ units, I came to the conclusion that I would check out the Onkyo, and sniff-test it, so to speak.
Well, I am happy to report that, sometimes, rarely, you don't get what you pay for-YOU GET MORE...and the Onkyo definitely is one of those rare gems. No, I don't work for Circuit City...and have no reason to stump for some new brand I just dragged in my home. I used Pioneer products for over 20 years. The Onkyo simply kicks maximum BUTT, and I am very pleased. It sounds incredible, and my new JBL's sound totally different with the TX-DS777.
It's unfortunate that there have been many reports of horrid hum, hiss, and whatever other nasties that others may have endured with thier 777's-but so far, with a week and about 25+ hrs of use, mine's behaving like a church-mouse. I will offer, that when I peg the volume at maximum, I can hear a faint sound out of the center channel WHEN I PRESS MY EAR UP TO THE CENTER SPEAKER, but hey, I consider this very normal. Especially considering if one would do the same thing, and accidently click on the tuner or something at max volume, they would find thier eardrums on a permanent vacation. I did not test the other channels for this-but after all the negative publicity, I have been watching this thing very, very closely. I hear no bleed-through between sources, either. It does run a bit warm, but what do you expect for a high-current design, flexing it's muscles?
After reading some of these terrible reviews, and getting a bit gunshy, I almost leaned toward the Denon 3300, or Pioneer Elite VSX 26; but I went down to the local Circuit City after learning that they carried the Onkyo, and gave it a real spin. I haven't looked back since. Yeah, I bought it there, where I paid a bit more that 'net prices, but I have a local face I can go to if this thing starts misbehaving. It does Music and HT equally well. I agree, the treble adjustment could be a bit finer, incrementally speaking; but I suppose dropping in a good EQ between the "Preamp out/Power in's" would do the trick if you really want to get picky. This is the first unit that I have heard that sounds awesome with everything set flat. And though I miss HAVING a loudness switch, I DON"T NEED IT!
Now I have to buy a better CD player.....
My advice-buy it!

Power, Features

Weakness:

Documentation

I upgraded my receiver to the Onkyo from a Yamaha RX-V2090 two months ago. I love its power, features, and sound. The programmable remote is also quite nice (although I've not fully programmed it at this point in time). I've installed all of my speakers (Polk Audio, 5 + subwoofer) and I don't seem to have the hum problem that many people have mentioned. I use quality interconnects, speaker wire, and I also filter the power with a Panamax 1000 Power Center. It seems to run warm, but it is not hot, like one person earlier had mentioned. If I have a gripe, it is with the documentation. It is pretty scant. However, I feel that for the money and features it offers, it is untouchable. One recommendation I have is to purchase the receiver from an Onkyo authorized distributor versus Circuit City (unless you're independently wealthy). I paid 15% less, and that was its everyday price! Two thumbs up!

Strength:

Dead silence with no input, no amp hiss at all

Weakness:

Sort of lacks mid warmth

I'm trying to find a new DD HT receiver, and I've been reading everything on this site for a month. I finally took some CDs and my awesome Sony MDR-V6 headphones down to a reputable stereo store to compare the Onkyo 777 with the Marantz SR-7000 (I specifically listened for hiss). With the Onkyo, there was no hiss whatsoever. I mean, compared with every single other receiver in the whole store (yes, I listened to all briefly with no input and on high volume) it was THE ONLY ONE that had NO HISS whatsoever. That was impressive. The sound was really nice, too, but the treble controls jump in increments that are too large. I either got "slightly too much", or "not quite enough" treble. The bass sounded really nice, totally smooth and realistic, not boomy, and not lacking at all. However, the overall sound seemed to be noticably lacking mid-range. Has anyone else felt this way about it? I'm used to my old receiver which has a mid-range EQ control that I use a lot... :( But, this amp really was awesome, perfectly transparent amplification, no hiss or distortion of any type. Then I checked out the Marantz SR-7000, and there was so damn much hiss, I couldn't even hear the music! I asked the salespeople if something was wrong, I let them listen, too, and they said, "Wow, that sounds terrible"! The Marantz also had no mid-range EQ control, but was worse than the Onkyo because it had waay too much mid range, and totally changed the original sound of all my CDs. And you can't turn down the mid, it's just totally annoying. It also took a great deal more power to deliver the same volume as the Onkyo (even though it is rated about the same wattage), and therefore added even more hiss. So, since the Marantz was out after that, I compared the 777 to the 575. The 575 sounded worse. It had more hiss than the 777 (not much at all, second best in the whole store) and you could hear little "clicks" when you upped the volume... :( I think I'm gonna' go for the 777, it was very very impressive. Anyone have feedback re the Marantz? What was that all about? I was expecting an awesome sound from that unit, and it was horrible!

Strength:

Excellent Remote, THX Certified 105Wx5

Weakness:

There arent REALLY 26 DSP modes, only about 12

System: Onkyo TSX-DS777, Mission 771 front and rear and Mission 77c center. Infinity HPS-1000 sub. Tara Labs wire throughout. This reciever is hands down the best in its price range. Dolby Digital is crystal clear. I have yet to test DTS. I tend not to use THX because my speakers are currently placed rather close together (closer than I'd like) because of room limitations and THX seems to make the sound stage too narrow. I do however love the Re-EQ feature that can be applied to Dolby Digital. It tones down the highs while keeping the stage nice and wide. The sound of glass breaking with Re-EQ on sounds clear and no longer piercing and to high. 5 channel stereo is excellent for all kinds of music with the exception of classical and some live jazz recordings which I would recommend the "orchestra" field for. About 5 channel stereo-if your center is not matched to your fronts it will sound out of place. This reciever also has excellent bass responce, light years ahead of my old Pro-Logic Pioneer. My HPS sub is now much more accurate and blends perfectly with the 90hz roll off of the Missions. It used to be boomy and somewhat slow when used with the Pionner. Other excellent points are assignable digital inputs, (Sony does not have) useful DSP modes, (Sony and Pioneer dont have) and the remote is simply the best I've ever seen coem with any piece of equipment. Retails for $999. However, you can get it delivered double-boxed from Bestpriceaudiovideo.com for only $739. Its a steal

Strength:

Great Features, Breathtaking power

Weakness:

Limited DSP settings, inflexible preamp connector setup.

I just got one of these babies, and THEY ***SO*** ROCK!!!! By far the best receiver I've ever had (heard). I just hope that Onkyo quality is up to what I've read about... The biggest thing that I like is that it has the capacity and current to run my old 6-ohm Infinity speakers - they actually chewed up and spit out two previous Sony receivers... I give value 4 stars and overall 5 stars, because it is the best mid range, full featured receiver I've ever encountered

Powerful Sound, 5 CH STEREO.

Weakness:

The dreaded hiiiiiiiiiiis.

First I have to say that I love Onkyo. I have been using the Onkyo A-DS650 for almost a year now and i was totally satisfied with it.
Later on I saw the Onkyo TX-DS777 and I just had to have it!!! So I bought it.

First impression was....what an awesome machine!!
We are talking power here, everything sounded just great and the 5 CH Stereo was incredible.

My Canton Ergo RC-L just bombarded my room with sweet music!
Then after a while I noticed the HISSSSSS mostly from the center speaker but also from all the other speakers.

I moved the receiver far away from the TV(SONY 32WIDE 100Hz)
and the hiss was reduced but it was still there.
I also moved the Pioneer 525 Dvd player...NO CHANGE.
It made me VERY MAD! Whenever a movie was quiet you could EASILY hear the hisss from all the speakers.
Even when I played music...hisssss.

That's it I said and after 2 days I returned it back and got a Pioneer VSX-908RDS THX Ultra receiver(European).

The sound is AWESOME but i miss the 5 CH Stereo mode of the Onkyo...:(
Otherwise I must say that my new Pioneer receiver surpriced me alot and restored my faith in sound quality.
The Canton Ergo RC-L still bombards my living room and watching movies is real pleasure....

I am feel heartbroken for having to leave Onkyo but I think it is their fault. I feel betrayed by them because I trusted them.

At this moment I feel that I have a good system for both music and DVD-movies.

It will take along time before I can ever trust Onkyo again...

The center channel hum - Until I got it fixed

I wrote a review after my first week with the unit. I was not happy about the hum and thought about sending it back and getting the Denon 3300. I am a fan of Onkyo and wanted to keep the unit. Onkyo sent me an email with the procedure to follow and was very understanding and explained that it was probably interference from my older T.V. ('91 Mitsubishi 31"). Which I discovered was true because no hum when set is off. I took the receiver in to a sevice center and I had my unit back the very next day. Granted when you spend a lot off money you expect the product to work. However I don't believe that Onkyo was negligent in their construction of this unit I think it was just an oversight. Anyway I have it all hooked up and it sounds awesome. For those out there who are thinking about getting this unit I highly recommend it. If you already have one and are suffering the same problems then try what I did. Then just bite your lip and hope Onkyo learned from their mistake.

Strength:

better remote than Sony 555ES and Yamaha 995

Weakness:

lacked bass in my system Klipsch KLF-30

I liked this receiver but it lack any punch in the lower bass. I had a Sony 555ES before and a Yamaha after this receiver both had more lower bass. Strange?? I also had the center channel hiss in a post recall unit. I gave up and returned it to get the Yamaha, I more than anyone hate to be a sheep following the herd, but I like the Yamaha best even with the remote.
