Strength:

DD; THX; 5-CH Stereo; Multiple Digital Connections

Weakness:

Receiver becomes very hot; Remote

I decided to upgrade my receiver about 2 mo's ago from a Kenwood, so that I could get DD. I as others below checked out Marantz; Denon; and Sony. This receiver blows them away the sound is great!! and powers my Paradigms very nicely. The cost is great if it had no other features, but you also get 5-Ch Stereo and THX cert. I do not have the hissing that others describe below.

I would recomend this receiver to anybody that was in the market for one at a good value with lot's of features. My only problem is that is heats up, but that is to be expected from such a powerful amp..

Strength:

Sound Quality, Definition, Clarity, Power, THX Select Cert, Price ($685)

Weakness:

No Midrange Adjustment

After months of searching for a great sounding receiver at a good price, I was able to finally pick one last night. I was torn between the models listed above and noticed the following about each. The Denon (about $998 in my area), while it had a good amount of power and sounded good on music, it had a tendency to sound Bright and Edgy on Movies. It displayed a Harshness that I found to be fatiguing when watching a movie. The Marantz (selling lately for about $899) had a nice warm sound when listening to music and sounded good with movies. But, there seemed very few dealers in my area who carry them and these units are in high demand and many dealers are selling them for about 100 dollars over MSRP. The Sony (Avg price in my area $999) sounded great on movies, but lacked something on Music. It's possible that the unit needed further tweaking, but frankly, I think it has so many features and adjustments that I'm not sure that I'd every get it setup the way I like. The Onkyo had a great sound on movies, never harsh or too bright. The sound on Music is very good, but does not sound quite as warm as the Marantz. Id say It's better than the Sony, and Equal or Slightly better than the Denon. Now for the best part. Most of the places I saw this receiver showed an MSRP of about $1099 with it selling for about $789. I was able to get it for $685 from of all places, a local Circuit City!. The sign on the unit showed $789, but after Demo'in the unit and still showing my indecision the salesman told me I could get it for $685 with a 30day return policy. While all of the other receivers sounded great in there own way, I think I made the right choice going with Onkyo. Not to mention I saved over 200 dollars from the next cheapest, Marantz. Now it's time for new speakers...Anyone have any suggestions? I'm Thinking of the Def Tech ProCinema 100.6.

There are Bass and Treb adjustments, but none for Mid. Reciever looks kinda plain.

Strength:

Excellent surround decoding. Great sounding in stereo mode. Decent remote

Weakness:

The hiss in Pro Logic

Got the B model thinking that the hiss problem was fixed. Some people here seemed to be having some luck with it.

Nope, it's still there and can be heard from about 15 ft away with the volume at ~35% max.

I called Onkyo and they KNOW about the problem, suggested getting a ground loop installed that will REDUCE the hiss. I took it to the service center and the guy said 2 to 3 weeks for repair. That pissed me off and if that did not take the hiss out, then I was stuck with it because the store would not let me return it after 30 days.

So, the more I was thinking, the more it made me mad that Onkyo knows about the problem yet is still shipping these receivers. If they have that poor of Quality Control and commitment to customer satisfaction, then I don't want this unit or anything else from them.

Listened to it for about 2 and a half weeks and could not take it anymore. Onkyo has lost a repeat customer.

The only reason I don't give this 1 and 1 stars is that it is cheap for a THX receiver ( guess we know why ), it has excellent sound reproduction in stereo mode and the surround decoding is near perfect, if you don't mind the hiss.

Strength:

Very clean sound with outstanding decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS. Better than average remote.

No noise, or hiss noted by other reviewers. Receiver is located with 8 inches of the TV and within 36 inches of a computer. Cables are pro-audio grade. DTS decoding is amazing. Sound clarity and detail with Paradigm Titans is far better than what I heard on my old receiver. While I realize that THX subwoofer crossover is 80hz, a variable sub woofer crossover would be helpful. Did not see this for any other receivers. Unit is somewhat complicated to set up, but how often do you do need to do that? Have not used DSP modes much. I do think Mono Movie mode does well for old movies on Directv. I have found that music sounds best in Stereo of Direct modes. I use an Onkyo DVD Changer which works well with the receiver. My first AMP was an old Dynaco with 2 KT 88 tubes and big transformers. I think amazing progress has been made over the years.

Power, Remote, Thoughtful design

Weakness:

Manual

Purchased this unit about 2 weeks ago. Although I listen to music constantly, I didn't have anything approaching high-end audio, just an old Pioneer VSX-452 pro logic receiver. The new unit has an absolutely bewildering array of options that I'm just beginning to explore. The sound is outstanding - with this receiver one feels immersed in sound. Because it is so superior to my last unit, I have found that I will need to spend a lot of time fine tuning it for the horrible acoustics of my small living room - a task that I am happy to perform. This really is some toy! I liked to 8.1 compatibility options on the Denon but couldn't see my way through the $300. premium. The sound was equally outstanding but I found the Onkyo remote nicer.

With regards to the support, the Onkyo contact here was fabulous. The guys in Markham (about 30 minuted north of Toronto) talked me through a lot of the details of setting the system up - about 20 minutes all told in spite of my buying the unit from someplace other than an Onkyo authorized distributer (I was truthful about where I purchased the unit). The service was so good that it prompted me to write a thankyou letter. Let me say that the service was not direct from Onkyo per se, but because they don't have a presence in Canada, they have contracted customer service out to a third party - maybe this is the solution in America.

Strength:

Very Powerful, Better Remote design than before, price,
value, ability to change individual channel levels,
Overall good sound quality for the money

Weakness:

Hisss, lack of midrange warmth, customer service from Onkyo

The TXDS-777 lacks some midrange and needs an adjustment for
this attribute. It also has irritating hiss coming from all five channels at low volume settings.

The Customer service is poor. Talking with the Onkyo Rep
in my area, repair shops for electronics, Onkyo customer
support reps, and other people that should be knowledgeable
on the product and its state of affairs, no-one can give me
a straight answer as to whether there was a recall or not,
if there is a propensity for this receiver to have hisss,
or whether the problem is fixable or not.

I have good monster cable speaker wire w/ banana clips for hooking it all up and Klipsch RF-3 Speakers all around, w/ RC-3 center channel and Klipsch LF-10 Pro Subwoofer, so I don't think it's my equipment I'm using w/ it.

If anyone could tell me what they did to fix their
hisss problem in all channels (not just the center channel)
please email me.

For Build Quality, value, performance and features (minus the hisss problem), I give the TXDS-777 a solid 5, and their customer service a solid 1. Isn't
making satisfied the customers that make these big corp's rich, important to them? Isn't repeat business important, considering that it doesn't take much effort to correct a
mistake that they made in the first place? Think about that
Onkyo Exec's.

Strength:

THX Select, DD and DTS, 5.1 channel analog input, pre-outs for all 6 channels, one digital optical output, 4 digital inputs(2 coax,2 opt), 5 S-VHS inputs, learning remote w/macros, manual.

Weakness:

On screen display (Font is...not nice to look at.)
Runs hot (to be expected).
(A lot of power in that beast!)
Bad Customer Service, I had a question on their
products but never received a call back.
Almost prevented a sale!

First, I must say NO hum, hiss, or burp, Just pure bliss!
WOW! What sound, I didn't know what I was missing.
Great price too!
The sound is so clean, smooth and silky it
just gives me goose bumps.
This unit is so easy to set up that I thought I must have missed something. Not the case!
Adjustable speaker levels (All Independent!)
Individual speaker distance setup was a snap.
I could go on...but will not.
The 5ch stereo mode must be experienced!
The auto switching for DD/DTS/Pro is ultra fast.
The manual is very easy to follow and use. Not the case with other brand names.
The remote is very "universal" in all meaning of the word.
My only dislike is the accuracy of the "joy stick".
Seperate arrows and an enter button would have been better.
For the few weeks that I have owned this unit I must say
that it is the best receiver I have ever owned.

$999.99 retail is a great price for this receiver,
but you can get it a lot cheaper on the internet.
What more could you ask for?!

can't find any yet

About a month ago I plunked down some $ on my tv, a toshiba HD 56" theaterwide (that should be in next week WOO-HOO!) So it made sence to upgrade my whole system. After listening to the onkio i was pretty much hooked, but i did go listen to the poineer elite 26, the poineer sounded "flat" to me. I got a good deal on the floor model at circut city, but one glitch... no remote or manual. Luckily my old onkio remote does enough to get me by and the controlls are easy enough to use that i can wait for a manual. I called onkio this morning and unlike other people my experience with them has been good, the guy i talked to actually called me back to tell me that they were out of stock on the remote and that he would try to call me when it came in.
The 777 makes my old mismatched speaker set up sound GREAT!!
NO HISS, NO HUM just good clean sound!!! i cant wait till i hear it with the new speakers...B&W 601's on all corners, B&W cc6 in the center and a paradigm pdr10 sub. if you are thinking of this receiver GET IT!!!
any questions or comments? feel free to e-mail me
