Strength:

lots of conections s video switching

Weakness:

poor workmanship

I have had the unit aprox 2 months the first unit i revived didn't work out of the box. the only way to make the play was to select direct tried to contact onkyo left two messages no return call (I thought i was doing something wrong because it would work sometimes until you change sound fields) the people at soundcity were great about sending out a new unit....the new unit worked great no hiss worked as it should. Now after have this one a litle over a month the video 1 s-video out has no signal but if you plug any s-video signal into video 2 it works for all of the video inputs (wrong picture). I will be contacting soundcity to get this fixed...hopefuly this will be the last time...
the only the overall rating is a 3 is poor quality control.....don't get me wrong I like the reciever just not the problems.

Strength:

Versatility, Upgradability, Power, Sound Quality and Detail.

Weakness:

No Digital Inputs and No Dolby Digital.

Onkyo... Well, as with many things in life, Onkyo was a big surprise. I knew it from reputation, but that reputation seemed out of reach for my 900$ budget. Not so ! When I saw this baby on a hardware store for that price, I knew I had a winner... And what a winner that is... The sound on this baby, both Audio and HT is just unbeleivable ! (My neighbours don't like it, though). No hiss or hum whatsoever, and the only reason I'm going to change it soon is not it's fault... Who told me to get a Dolby ProLogic processor, when Dolby Digital was going into max-speed ? (1.5 years ago ) Dumb me ! And I still might not sell it ! In another room, it will still rock the place ! And imagine the kids in 10 years, listening to my old Cd's :) Guess what my next buy will be ? Onkyo TX-DS 787, but that is for a later review.
Have you ever seen Diana Krall live ? I have ! And she sounds almost as good in my living room... Great detail, and the sound field is huge. Don't forget that It only has analogin inputs... A winner !

Rest of the equipment:
Onkyo CD Player (Model ??)
Micromega millenium II DVD
Panasonic S-Vhs Video (Model ??)
Phillips 32" 9503 (Or is it 9305 ?)
B&W 300 Series (DM302 Rears, DM305 Fronts, and CC3 Central)
No sub-woofer Yet, but am planning on getting REL Q100-E (Maybe this Weekend)

Strength:

Power and price.

Weakness:

Patience with the "learning" remote.

I must say that I initially had reservations after
ordering this receiver seeing as though it only cost
$500. However, UPS dropped it off, I upacked it, hooked it
up to a pair of Maggies and a Velodyne sub, and was
blown away. I don't know if I could put together a better sounding bedroom stereo system for the price. My biggest
concern was pushing a pair of Maggie MMGs (4 ohm load) with this receiver. However, this bad boy makes my Maggies sing with a limited volume setting. I've heard better receivers, have a better amp to push my speakers, but am dumbfounded by the clarity in such a budget-minded system. Auditioned Marantz SR7000/8000 and a comparable Pioneer Elite model, and would take this receiver over those any day. If you can get the 777 anywhere near this price, don't hesitate.

PS--No Hiss at all!!!

Weakness:

Runs warm; tuner could better

This is a follow-up from my initial reivew 6 months ago.
Thought I'd give an update. Still, after 6 months of listening, I hear no hiss or hum. Finally programmed the remote to control all my various A/V stuff.( was lazy, but got tired of "remote roulette") The remote gives very acceptable performance. I still am very satisfied when listening to my Onkyo, but I am going to replace all my Monster Cables with BetterCables products.
BTW, the (B) designation of the model number means BLACK, not the latest version. The only way to tell that attribute is by the serial ##. As far as the users who couldn't get the bass response happening, they probably needed to check their "setup mode" settings. I have a JBL PSW-D112 powered sub, and there is NO LACK OF BASS whatsoever. The only regret I have is not waiting ( and saving for) the new Onkyo TS-DX989...what a powerhouse!

Strength:

THX Certification and all that that involves at a price
that is hard to match. Lots of little bells and whistles to play with (great dude stuff) send your wife or girlfriend out for the day and just play with the Onkyo. Lots of DSP options to mess with to your hearts content.

Weakness:

If you have never owned a 5.1/dolby receiver this Onkyo
could be daunting in terms of learning to use it to its full capacity. It requires some training for the neophyte.
By teh same token if you have experience with electronic gizmos you will find this receiver fairly easy to deal with.

The digital 5.1 decoder in my Pioneer bit the bullet and prompted a need for either a new receiver to use as a pre/pro to my Outlaw Audio multichannel amp or to go buy
a pure separate pre/pro. It was not an easy decision but
money did play a part. Since the Onkyo has THX certification
and I already possess THX certified speakers/subwoofer system then it follows that I wanted the processor to be
THX as well. Fact....separate pro/pros curently on the market are expensive. VERY EXPENSIVE! The term Audiophile
and pricy equipment do go together. Most pre/pros at least
attempt to pass themselves off as Audiophile Quality merchandise. I do not be;lieve there are many pre/pros with
THX certification on the market for less than 2000.00 Outlaw Audio is planning to market one late this year but
it remains to be seen what it will cost. It will include
6.1 processing. Anyway I find the Onkyo to be clean sounding and free of any hiss or noise. I am not using the
amps integral to the 777 though so I cannot guess if the
receivers amps could cause thsi problem. I have experienced
no clicking when changing volume with the unit. In fact I like the way the Onkyo allows the user to dial up the volume
slowly a click at time. It enables great ease in calibrating speaker levels which if you are trying to attain
a true home THX standard is absolutely necessary. The BASS
management is excellent by my less than calibrated ears.
With my M & K subwoofer set to THX reference the Onkyo and the subwoofer seem to work well together in the THX mode.
Leaving the subwoofer set to THX and then using the Onkyo in
stereo for music seems to be equally satisfying. You can of course set a non THX subwoofer up with the Onkyo and monkey with the adjustments to your hearts content. As I do
have THX speakers I find it easier to leave the receiver set
to THX all. The receiver operates well at reference volumes
in my system. Remember that I am not pushing the speakers with the inboard Onkyo amps. I believe however that if I were the sound would still be good. The M & K speakers are
4 ohm impedance and so can require a good deal of power.
The Onkyo does have a six ohm load capability so I expect
you couold ge5t improved performance from low impedance speakers at higher outputs especially when dealing with music or movies with lots of low BASS content. I found the remote to be actually user friendly once it was all setup with the learned codes of the other components. i like the
DSP modes and the way the Onkyo allows you to mix and match
to any given program. It a great "dude" machine. If you like bells and whistles you cant go wrong with the Onkyo.
I feel like the Onkyo meets my needs for a pre/pro without
having to spend 2000.000 or more for THX. As a bonus I have the WRAT amps internal to the Onkyo should I ever need to
move or use the Onkyo somewhere else without a separate amp.
teh performance

Strength:

Very powerful, clean sound, multiple S-Video inputs and outputs, easy to program the remote, On-Screen menus

Weakness:

No "Multi-source" option - I considered this to be a great feature in previous Onkyo receivers. Runs very hot.

I think this is a great receiver. I never had the hissing problems, and by the way the (B) in the product means BLACK, not rev B.

My main gripe, is not having a "multi-source" feature, as I did with my Onkyo SV515Pro, which allowed me to have one source, FM radio for example, in the family room, then have a CD playing through the back yard speakers, so my wife or daughter could listen to something else. Not having this feature on a considerably more expensive and poweful receiver was most dissapointing.

Some of the DSP settings are silly, such as TV Logic and Studio-Mix, where there is a big echo as if you are listening to it in a studio -- so what? I realize I can control this with reverb, but why?

It does run hot! Very hot, so make sure you place it in an area that has lots of ventilation. I also was surprised that the "switched" AC outlets (to connect other equipment) was a maximum of 120 watts. I really could not connect anything into it, (an additional amp, or a subwoofer) or I would have immediately exceeded the maximum. They should know in this day and age the power consumption of even one piece of equipment is more than 120 watts.

Suggestion: Before purchasing, know the width, and depth of the Onkyo 777 to make sure it fits into your entertainment center shelves. It is very deep and does not fit on many shelves without taking the back off of them.

Overall, I am very pleased with this receiver. Great "On Screen" menus; almost everything is on the remote (individual speaker volumes, DSP selection, On-Screen menu adjustments, main volume, etc., and it has a back light). With a little time and patience I was able to easily program the remote to work with all of my equipment.

Search the web for great prices. I paid $729 from Bestpriceaudiovideo.com, they delivered exactly when they said they would and they give you the tracking number for UPS so you can track the package. I also got excellent service from them. They actually e-mailed me and called me back with some technical solutions I had called them with.

Strength:

Full featured (THX, DTS5.1, etc), great bass response, flexible fully programmable backlit remote, 105W/CH, future flexibility (expandability).

Weakness:

POOR manual, Remote can get complicated to operate if you have many remotes to program into it, runs warm to hot, too many parameters to set for each sound setting (DSP's).

Have owned it for 1 week now. Bass response is excellent. My JBL subwoofer came to life under this receiver (was never working under my Pioneer). Has many connections for just about anything audio you have. Receiver is very powerful and it's 105W/Ch has no problem with my 6.1 set-up (I have 2 center channel speakers combined into 1). Some DSP modes, however, are difficult to hear the characters talking whenever TV, video or DVD is being played. This can be overcome with adjusting the reverb and echo. I did much e-commerce shopping and found it at Douglas TV in Chicago for 688 dollars + 10 dollars shipping. Try respond.com for the BEST prices!!!!! Overall impression for this receiver is EXCELLENT. You will be hard pressed to find a comparable receiver at this price with this many features. Make sure receiver has flow through ventilation to keep it cool because it runs very warm! I would recommend this receiver to anyone who wants premium sound at a reasonable price. For folks who want remote operation simple, stick with your separate remotes because programming all of your existing remotes to this one can create confusion when switching modes (ie: DVD to Video1 to TV to VCR, etc).

Strength:

Plenty of Power, Lot's of Impact during movies, Easy to Use, Digital Output, Sound.

Weakness:

Can't switch Stations from remote unless it's been preset. Radio Reception.

Great Sounding Receiver with good Features. Plenty of Power for movies and music. However, good radio reception requires an antenna (at least in my area). Would have been nice to be able to Scan radio stations from the remote. Build Quality seems ablove average. Can't comment on THX, as I do not have THX Cert Speakers.
