Optical Digital Output (for DVD recorders in future)
DTS
Usefull DSP modes
very well layed out remote with macros
great price for a THX reciever

I just got this reciever after a long search for a good home theatre system. Unfortunately my tastes outpaced my pocketbook by a good deal. The Onkyo TX-DS777 is an excellent reciever and is easilly worth much more than it costs. It is a great deal and provides plenty of power without sacrificing quality. It is also great at both movies and music, something that many recievers aren't great at.

I loved my Onkyo Pro logic receiver which I had for almost 4 yrs (and still rocking on) I wanted to upgrade to a digital receiver and the 777 had everything that I wanted and more! I don't have the hiss that others were saying they were experiencing all that comes out of my receiver is power and clarity. I've tried all the DSP modes and found that each sounded very good. The Yamaha 995 is a good receiver but doesn't come close to the Onkyo. I truly recommend it to anyone and the price is outstanding. (I got mine online for $748.00 total).

Strength:

Warm, musical sound.

Weakness:

Can't think of any.

I have decided to purchase this unit based on my experience in the showroom with it. I spent about a half an hour with one at Circuit City with a DVD of Armageddon. What an incredible machine! To my ears, it has a warmer sound to it than the Yamaha that I was initially going to purchase. Good job Onkyo! Oh, and to top it off, I found it locally for a couple of hundred dollars less than at the local Circuit City!

Easy to use remote!!! I love it!

Great receiver! My husband has had Denin equipment since we got married (13 years). I bought this for him for his birthday and he said he like Denin stuff. I told him the guy at the store said just have to try this one out and if you didn't like bring it back. Well we still have it and my husband loves it and so do I!! Movies sound great. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new receiver!

This is a very good receiver! The chip problem is fixed, it has great sound and features, and people should get off the Denon bandwagon and try this one!! It's a very competitive product!

Wow!! I looked in here to get a bit of an insight into "Best Buys" in the DD/DTS arena - I'm amazed to find so much crap concerning wattage, loudness, overloading and general down-rating of products simply because "it's not loud enough....." or "there's a hissing noise when the volumes above 98 and I'm listening from 6 inches away from the tweeter!!!!". Christ!!! if you have the volume set so high, the hissing noise is the blood being forced out through your eardrums!!!!

En Fin - After spending many hours trying to weed-out the well informed, educated, un-biased reviews (which do exist - Thank you all, you know who you are!), from the hordes of uninformed, amoeba brained, biased by price/max-volume reviews - I GIVE UP! Why do you bother writing if you can't be constructive?

Oh, by the way, for all you whining nancy's who've had a rough time with a specific dealer, I commend you for advising the public at large, but please don't f&$k-up the review rating of the product just because you're having a bad day! It's not our fault....

Ok, I'm off to try and find an informative review site.
(As this is not a real review I'm going to award 3 stars each so as not to affect the end-result too much :-))

LACK OF BASS !!!
24bit/96KHz not working well

I bought this Onkyo 777 more than 1 year ago. Before that I had a DPL Yamaha unit. Price was quite good (in France actually).
Immediately, I felt a impressive lack of bass. I was used to listen to a NAD stereo unit, very warm, and my Yamaha was also A LOT warmer than the Onkyo. As a bassist, I like to listen carefully to bass lines, and it is nearly impossible to do that with the Onkyo. It's alright for video, but for audio this unit is just not worth it.
I can't understand how people are happy with it. Only 1 other reviewer had the same feeling about the lack of bass.

I just bought a NAD T770, and I am so happy with it. It's very simple, but it has just a perfect sound, warm, natural. I'm discovering all my CDs as if I just bought them again !

Actually, the onkyo has some bass in the low end, but there is a huge hole in between...

I also made a test with a 96KHz DVD (stereo). It makes a huge difference with the original stereo 44KHz track on my Yamaha, and on my actual NAD.On the onkyo, the difference was not noticeable !!!

If you like a warm sound, just don't buy it !!! Buy a NAD, you will love the sound !!!

I don't have a larger room to set it up in!!!

I have had my 777 for about a 1 1/2 years. I bought it from OneCall.com (Dealt with Richard by phone) as a factory "B" stock. It came with the full factory warranty and was sealed in a factory box. I have not had one problem with this unit. It sounds fantastic. Very flexible. Awesome power. I WOW everyone who comes over and watches movies or listens to music played through it. I LOVE this thing and would buy their product again in an instant. I did my homework for about six months before buying this unit. I waited long enough for them to rectify the original production problems it encountered. I hooked everything up with Audio Quest Turquoise connectors and Audio Quest type 4 Navajo speaker wire. I've got the Atlantic Technologies Compact Theater speaker system (sorry to see it discontinued), and I also bought the JVC HRS 7600 S-VHS VCR. I've now got a Sony PS2 hooked through the optical input and games are simply AMAZING!!! The salesman, Richard, at OneCall was extremely helpful, and put together a hell of a deal on everything.

Cudos, Props and many Thanks to all for accurate reviewing. I cannot find any smack to deliver on this bad boy. I did lots of reviewing, used up a tank of gas, and did hours of webwork. SUPER SATISFIED WITH THIS UNIT.
No Snap, Crackle, Pop or HISS. No Clickity Click either. I took the advice of the audiophiles and used Monster Cables throughout entire system.
Special Props to Lon for the serial number report.
I got the Malaysian model.
Dude, (several actually) if you're worried about a hiss problem why would you buy a refurbished model?
Bass problem? What? Have you adjusted the bass peak setup, or used a velodyne sub?
I am still playing with all the settings and find the integrity of this build to run throughout.
I biamped my Polks and this baby plays CD music (in direct, stereo, or 5ch stereo) like any receiver I auditioned. The decoding is fast, crisp, and so lifelike, it'll make you jump. (check out the barking dogs in the DVD "HEAT")
I can't sense any absence of warmth.
YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER RECEIVER FOR THE MONEY.
YOU MAY NOT BUY A BETTER RECEIVER FOR TWICE THE MONEY.
Way to go ONKYO.
