Strength:

THX,105x5 (lots of Power), DTS and Dolby Modes very clean
5 channel stereo mode and easy to use. Banana Plugs for all channels and digital out

Weakness:

Remote. Probably fired some engineers after coming up with this sorry excuse for a remote. Hiss in all channels, but I am not bothered by it and actually the only reason I have put my ear 1 cm next to the speakers when the music is not playing is because of the reviews on this site. In short, the hiss is not a big problem all things considered

This reciever is a machine!!!! Probably could handle a war if you put it through one. It has a lot of juice and the power just keeps on coming. It is very clean even at low listening levels. It does my PSB Subsonic 3i justice on the LFE channel. I never liked 5 channel stereo mode until I got this reciever and now I have never listened to my music in any other way. I was genuinely impressed by that. I have the NHT SuperSeries and I am quite impressed by the finesse in which this reciever handles them. I just read a review in Sound and Vision where it compared this reciever to a Marantz costing $1700 and a Kenwood costing $1500 and said the others sounded no better than this one!!! So I think that the value is very good considering the step up you get from this reciever to it's midline relatives such as the TX-DS 676 and my old Yamaha R-V 1105 or R-X795 (same thing). Recommend this reciever to anyone wanting an absolute machine that will last. 5 stars even with the Poorly engineered remote.

Strength:

The ability to match the sound quality to anything that you want to listen to.

Weakness:

None.

This has completely changed the way my system sounds. I switched from a Bose Lifestyle 12 series II speaker system to the Bose Acoustamas 15 speakers which are the same as the lifestyle. I went from having great sound with the bose 5.1 digital sound to having a hole new listening experience that has made watching movies at home a new experience all over again.

I also got a defective unit. Onkyo took good care of me. Sent in on a Monday UPS red, back on Wednesday. Shipping alone cost Onkyo over $200.00 I am happy with the 777. It was worth the wait. I hope to have it 7-10 years. That's how long my last Onkyo set up lasted. Can't come up with a thing I don't like about the 777. Paid only $749.00 including shipping. Can't tell you were. You know where to look. Just make the best deal. ??? What is everyone's opinion of the new remote??? I don't know what to compare it to. I give the 777 4.5 stars. Close to perfect, but nothing is perfect. Just thing, last years top of the line was over $2k. !!!! This is quite a deal.

The Recall,

Just bought a TXDS-777 from Rick at Audio Video Shopper, NJ and paid mid $700. Waiting for the unit to ship via UPS ground. I tried to have onecall.com match this price, but they won't and to scare me by saying that I will probably get a used unit w/o warranty or not get a unit at all. Anyway, I gave Rick a call and he was great. I will post another review when I get my unit to tell you all about the quality of product and service. So hold your orders.

I had tried a Sony, a TXDS 575 and a Yahama RXV1105. The 575 and 1105 are both very good receiver. What the 575 lacks is clarity in surround sound models where the 1105 provides more detail, definition and imaging. The 575 also have an disadvantage in the number of DSP. It locks you to one DTS model whenever you play a DTS coded DVD or CD. The 1105 does not. The 1105 has extras like on screen display, higher output, enhance surround sound. But the 575 beats the 1105 in the area of programable remote. The Yahama remote looks cheap, button placement lacks logic which make it un-netural to use. Oh, and the Sony!? It's a piece of shxx, I'm ashame I bought it the first place.

Strength:

Onkyo fans(love the looks), build quality, volume dial, stunning sound.

Weakness:

If it had any would have bought something else.

Should have posted this review a long time ago, but its a shame that some people have had problems with this unit, because the quality of the product is truly on par with some of the more expensive units. I mean realistically to someone who watches dvd with the family and on weekends puts on some music during the day(like while your cleaning-argh, or playing chess) this is just simply overkill. Played everything from saving private ryan to haunting, toy story 2, etc. and this thing just really lets u feel the movie.Have a denon in the house also and the only difference to me is price, I really cant tell a difference with music but I prefer the onkyo in movies for some reason(its subjective).I feel bad for the people who had some bad his out of center its a shame because the rating on this thing would truly be higher.I have always loved onkyo products and feel this one is on par with most of their other stuff.

Strength:

Lot of Guts, Very powerful DTS sound, Great Remote, on screen display

Weakness:

Can take a while to setup, Humm after 60 db volume level

I wanted to upgrate my system. After lot of reviews and 3 month research, I picked ONKYO777 from Bid.com for $550.00 It took me a while to set it up. I really saw a big difference on my POLK 2000P from speakers when this baby cranked up. However I am very disappointed as I can hear Hiss or noise from front and center speakers at higher volume. I called Onkyo and they said make sure there is no interfearence from electric outlet but all my cables are shielded and atleast 6 feet away from any electric outlet. I really enjoyed it but I am upgrading it to ONKYO787. Also I have heard that these model have manufactruring defect in one of the chips which cause noise signal distortion.

Strength:

Power, great construction. simplistic looks.

Weakness:

Manual, tech support

I bought this around Xmas time to upgrade my Dolby Prologic setup. used to be into Yamaha, but I have found that are really cheap looking these days. I never even considered Onkyo before, but stumbled on a review on the internet on the TX-DS777. I auditioned one locally and was sold immediately. This unit has all the toys without looking like it does (like those UFO boomboxes you see at Costco).

The sound is superb, very rich with lots of dynamic range due to the power in this baby. Home theatre is awesome in 5.1.

My only glitch which I can see is that when I connect my DBS sattelite rec'r into the unit and set the record monitor to record the sat, I get a horizontally scrolling vertical ghost line that takes about 5 seconds to go accross the screen. It is not noticeable when you watch the sat, but it does record on the tape. Other sat receivers do exactly the same thing. (its a Dishnetwork Rec'r) Anyone else had this problem? I think I may have to bring in my unit for service as it should not do this.

Other than this, this AVR is great and since they don't make it anymore would recommed its replacement the TX-DS787.

THIS RECEIVER ABSOLUTELY ROCKS. I HEAR MORE SOUND DETAILS THAN ANY RECEIVERS THAT I OWNED OR AUDITIONED. NO HUM OR HISS THAT SOME REVIEWERS MENTIONED. I ALSO LIKE THE 5CH STEREO. THE ONLY THING THAT I FOUND IS THAT THE MAIN B SPEAKERS CAN NOT BE USED IN SURROUND MODES. OTHERWISE THIS RECEIVER IS BETTER THAN ANY IN ITS PRICE RANGE.

Just brought home and switched the Denon 2801 out for the Onkyo. Had been waiting to get another Onkyo since finding a killer deal on the Denon. The Onkyo TX-DS777 for less than $350 is about the best deal I have come across for a receiver. Right away I noticed a tremendous amount of clarity with all input sources over the Denon. This receiver just rocks. I chose this over the 787 to in lieu of $400+ and THX-EX and 6.1. The 777 is worth every bit what I paid and the original retail. This is so simple to set up and fine tune all aspects while sitting on the couch with the remote. On-screen display really helps the time consuming method of setting everything individualy. I now have all sources programmed into one remote with 1 button DVD,CD and Satellite set-ups. I will recommend this receiver to anyone if you can find it for less than the 787. This just completes my home theater for now and I couldn't ask for more. My living room now sounds better than a movie theater or a concert hall for that matter. No receiver I have used can compare to the 777. Let's see what Onkyo has next for us!!!

Home Theater consists of:

Onkyo TX-DS777 Receiver
Onkyo DVC-600 DVD Changer
Onkyo DC-370 CD Changer
Monster Power HTS-3500 Power Conditioner
Sony KV-36FV16 WEGA Television
Infinity Overture 2 Front Speakers
Infinity CC-3 Center Channel
Infinity RS-8 Rear Speakers
Infinity RS-3 Extra Surround Speakers
Infinity HPS-1000 Subwoofer
DOLBY DIGITAL Satellite System
All cables and wires are Acoustic Research
