Strength:

Power, THX, Clean sound with great channel seperation, Construction!

Weakness:

High frequency causes center channel and sub-woofer humm when close to TV

This unit has been wonderful! This thing blows away anything else in it's price range. I could have bought the Denon but how cheap is that thing, what an awful piece of craftsmanship, what can you expect, it's made by Sharp Electronics, they should stick to calculators and microwave ovens.I can go on and on about how wonderful but I really wanted to say is that there was a hiss in the center channel and sub woofer of my unit like some of the others and I found out by trial and error and process of elimination that it was the TV. It turns out the 777 operates at a much higher fequency than previous models. This of course was no problem, I just put it on a lower rack in my entertainment unit and the humm disappeared. Hope this helps some of you with the same problem!!!

Strength:

Crystal clear sound in all modes

Weakness:

none

I purchased this unit over a month ago. I have had nothing but excellent crystal clear sound from all modes. No hiss from my center speaker .The bass ,I have to lwr the bass mgt. to keep my windows from viberating. From reading some of the other reviews I must have gotten a exceptional good unit or some people have not yet learned to operate this unit properly. Take time to read the owners manual & learn to use this receiver. The bass is there! You can ask my neighbors. If you do not get this performance from this receiver , you did get a faulty unit or the wiring is not set up correctly. I have my receiver setting on top of my TV & no bleedover what-so-ever. The sound is clear no hiss from my CD player. No hiss from my DVD player!Full volume has a exceptional clean sound.

Strength:

Solid build. Decodes AC3/DTS/MPEG2. Excellent sound. Easy setup.

Weakness:

Very, very, very slight hiss not audible when more than 50cm from speakers.

The slight hiss I hear was also present in my Onkyo 919 receiver. I think it's because the receiver is placed directly (within 5 cm) next to a 100Hz widescreen TV. Also the s-video monitor out is connected to the TV. And so are the cinch audio out from TV to receiver. Interference...
The AC3/DTS decoding of the 777 is very good. I thought my 919 could keep up with nowadays digital technology, but no way... The 777 blows you away! So far I like the THX mode best for movies.
Will submit another review when I have more handson/ear-on experience with the 777.

Strength:

Stereo mode has a pretty clean sound although the bass is not as prominent as it was on my old Onkyo TX 904

Weakness:

The Center channel CUTS OUT FREQUENTLY while playing DVDs in either Dolby Digital or DTS mode

The Onkyo TX DS777 performed flawlessly for the first six months....then the center channel began to cut out all the time! Hoping it was not the receiver, I tried swapping out the speaker cable, the center speaker, I even borrowed another DVD player, but alas the problem is with the receiver. I have taken the receiver to 2 different authorized service centers. The local authorized service center has had my receiver for the past two months. When I just recently got it back, it immediately started having the same problem even though they performed a "factory modification" designed to remedy the center channel glitch. I have yet to contact Onkyo (BTW, I tried their website today, 7/4 www.onkyousa.com.....it's down!! I didn't expect them to be working on a holiday, but I wanted to get the Tech support/customer service numbers), but based on others' customer service horror stories, my expectations are low.

I purchased the TX DS777 because my Onkyo TX-904 was (and still is after 10 yrs.) a very high quality piece of equipment but if my receiver is any indication of Onkyo quality today, this will definitely be my last Onkyo purchase.

The TX DS 777 is WAY too expensive to crap out on me in less than 1 year.

Strength:

Warm, musical sound.

Weakness:

Slight hiss in all channels.

Just a few quick comments about this receiver now that I've had it for about 24 hours now.

I am very impressed with this unit in all movie sound modes (Dolby Digital, Pro-Logic, DTS) in my less than ideal setting. I am only using 5 speakers with no subwoofer. The front three are set to full size, while the rears are set to small. This receiver can really make a 5.1 DVD or even a Pro-Logic videotape cope to life with a (well equipped)theater like realism.

There is however one problem... I hear a slight hiss in all 5 speakers. There is no pronounced hum in the center, just a hiss that is audible when the selected input has nothing playing through it. I can hear this from at least 5 feet away from the speakers. I know that these can be essentially noise free receivers. The first one I had my hands on (this was a pre-recall unit) at a local Circuit City had only the slightest hiss with the volume set a maximum. I could detect no hiss from this same display unit at normal listening levels. I was impressed.

I will be looking into either exchanging this unit for a new one or possibly having a service center do the mod as mentioned in previous posts.

Oh... my serial number is 29X0027***, which is apparantly outside the range of the recalled receivers.

I'll post the outcome.

Strength:

Remote, On-screen programming, Power, DSP options, THX select, front pane video in and many others.

Weakness:

0.

I listned to the Yamaha and the Denon, and for the price the Onkyo can't be beat. This is the 3rd Onkyo I have owned, and it sounds great. I only wish I had'nt waited so long to take the 5.1 plunge. I got a great price at Sound Vision. MY only problem now is that I am going to have to upgrade my surrounds. This is a great receiver, and for the price, has more options than you can shake a stick at. I can't recommend it enough.

Clean crisp sound with POWER and Inputs Galore.

Weakness:

Can't use Composite VCR with S-Video out to TV

Love this receiver. I waited patiently for 1month and was taunted by Denon to give in to impatience. But i stuck it out and glad I did. I have all S-Video equipment, Except LD (Composite), and DVD (Component). Sound is awesome. I liked the Denon but it was shot down by not having Optical out. Sony? - tired of going to the repair shop. First time buying Onkyo, but their service was great and I love this product. Just wish it had Component inputs. but I can live without it, I just us the Component inputs from my RPTV. Got it for $749.00 Delivered Soundcity.com they were great.

Strength:

power, DTS decoder, THX, jog dial, best FM tuner I've seen in a receiver

Weakness:

remote way too complicated. Manual could be more clear.

Combined with Bose AM-15 speakers managed to fill 24 ft x 26 ft x 18 ft (ceiling) family room with warm sound without straining. DSP effects work. Solid (heavy) construction. I don't regret spending far more than I had intended ($999).

Strength:

THX select certification, DTS and AC-3 decoders onboard, 105 watts x 5 channels, 26 DSP modes, a great back-lit remote

Weakness:

NONE!

This receiver is the TX-DS777b (post-recall). Since the recall, the receivers are simply flawless. The combination of THX Select certification for higher DSP integrity, with the versatility of a whopping 26 DSP modes is truly amazing. The 105 watts per channel will rock your house off its foundation. It has more power than you'll ever need, and could probably run a DJ party. The sound quality is just stellar! I can't say enough about this receiver.

If you are interested in purchasing this receiver for only $739, email me at adb3@lehigh.edu and I will direct you to the seller. I made a deal that if I refer a certain number of sales, I will get a considerable discount on my own receiver. So email me and I'll send you all the seller's contact information, web page, 1-800 number, etc. and will then forward your email on to him to contact you. You need to make sure you say that I, Andrew Buschmeier, referred you, otherwise he will quote you with a higher price. He also carries the TX-DS676 for only $579, the TX-DS939 refurbished with a 1 year onkyo warranty for only $1229, and the TX-DS575 for only $369. Also, if you do end up purchasing through the dealer, a simple e-mail telling me so helps me to keep track of how many I have referred so I can get my discount. Thanks and happy listening!

I have the Onkyo DTR7 which is the Integra version of the 777. I am very pleased with this receiver. I have had it for about 45 days now. And have put it to the test on some very demanding movies and it pulls through every time. It is a very solid receiver and I can not find a flaw in it.
The musical side is very solid as well. The Onkyo line has been behind other manafactures for the last couple of years. And now the are making some of the best gear on the market. Try one and you will not be dissapointed.
