This is an awsome machine! I heard it once at circuit city
and it maid me a believer of this product. If your DVD player has a DTS out logo, you should try to find movies that are DTS DVD. The sound is out of this world. This machine gets my FIVE STARS!

I have an updated price on the TX-DS777. Onkyo has recently upped their price for this unit due to an incredible demand. Due to this expect increases in sale price. I have been able to get the price down to $739 for it, so if you are interested, contact me at adb3@lehigh.edu and get your's for the cheapest price around.

If you are interested in the TX-DS676 for $579, email me also. Thank you.

Strength:

Excellent power and clarity

Weakness:

It's looks - not as sleek as it could be

As most people are, I am using this in my Home Theater set-up. This has power to spare and sounds good while cranking. My previous receiver, the H/K AVR65 could not touch the 777 in terms of power. The 777's stongest point is its clear and accurate power output. It also has clean processing of DD and DTS and is very quiet in terms of noise. The remote is another very strong point - it is Onkyo's best yet due to its full backlighting, learning and macro capabilities. The chassis is solidly constructed and weighs a ton due to the large power transformer. The face is well laid out, but is not as clean or sleek as its competitors (I like the look of the Denon AVR-3300 more). It does, however, have a thick aluminum faceplate along with hefty machined aluminum volume and smart scan knobs. The display is informative and can be dimmed (but not disabled). Overall performance for both music and movies warrants a full 5 stars due to unprecedented levels of playback while retaining an accurate reproduction of the incoming material. If only the price were a little lower, the value quotient would go up - but this receiver is worth every penny.

This is the newest receiver from Onkyo and one of their first with DD/DTS on board. Let me just tell you, over the past few years Onkyo was lagging behind Yamaha, and Denon. This is not the case anymore! This receiver does alot of things very well. In addition, they got rid of that annoying remote which stands vertically on a table.
The OSD and user interface is much improved over the 939. The audio performance is a bit more involving than its Denon counterpart.
Best of all, this receiver can easily be had for only $779.99.
At this price, it is hard to beat. It ranks right up there with the Denon 3300 and Yamaha RXV 995.

Strength:

THX select for the price, remote, good clean amps, OSD

Weakness:

lack of component inputs

This is my first receiver. Read all the reviews before purchase, very happy with what I got, great price from OneCall. No hum experienced, good clean amplifications for all channels.

I've been using it for almost a month now and the only thing that happened was once, there is no sound output ... total dread silence right after power-up, DVD connected. Spent 5 minutes checking everything and the only thing that fixed it was power off/on. The display did show that it correctly decoded the audio stream as Dolby Digital 3/2.1.

Strength:

Sound Quality, Excellent control features, nice heavy construction.

Weakness:

None really

I have had this unit for about 8 months now. I must say it works very well. I did have some problems with it clipping on certain loud sounds from rock music. However, I found out that I had Maxed out all of the decibel settings. Once I took care of that it has not ever done so since. I am going to give this 5 stars for value and for the over all rating. It makes my movies and musioc come alive. I am a Jazz enthusiast and love Thelonius, Miles, Coltrane, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria Horace Silver Etc..... and this receiver really makes these old albums shine with presence that I love.

Strength:

Excellent sound and variety of features make this product my favorite component and the backbone of my system. The programable remote, controls, on screen display, and easy plug-ins make using this product easy to use and worth the investment.

Weakness:

Needs more tonal adjustment controls than just bass and treble.

I'm writing this review because I have had a different experience than some of the otreviews posted on this website.

This is a fantastic product. I am EXTREMELY glad I bought this machine. I listen to music or watch movies everyday and the machine has never failed for the past year and half. It sounds great!

If you have an opportunity to buy this one at a reasonable price, do it! Its very easy to use and has a variety of features and level of quality that you won't find in other comparable products. I liked the sound of Yamaha and the clarity of Denon. This Onkyo has both and also had a better controls and remote.

I traded in my Luxman Dolby Prologic AV receiver to
experience Doly Digital phenomenon.I had a real hard time in making the fine tunings and tweaking with TX-DS 777. Hey!that's the way AV gear is installed. There are times I enjoy the timbre and transients with analog and digital recordings.Even some perfectly recorded LPs sounded as if they were digital.I think this is one of the main features of digital equipment.Verdict :It has a peculiar engineering design with respect to sound and facilities.

Strength:

nice looking

Weakness:

many problems with mine

This is a second posting for this particular receiver. I have used it for nearly two years now (thank God the warranty hasn't expired yet) and the problems keep coming.

When the 777 runs... it runs well. I recommend good speakers with this unit. I originally used 'cheaper' ones and this unit accentuated their flaws.

Now for my problems... After about a year of use (not even that heavy) the unit began to blast 'white noise' when the unit was powered on and no source signal was being sent to the receiver. For example, I just watched a dvd... when the movie was over, I powered the dvd player off and about three seconds after dvd player turned off, white noise blared from all speakers. This noise is present for each source mode (dvd, tape, tuner, etc...)

I've checked all connections and isolated everything and it still happened from time to time. The only thing I could think to explain the problem was overheating. Because if I left the unit off for a little while and turned it back it on... silent... no noise.

I contacted Onkyo support (HA... very slow). So I contacted my local service center and they had a crack at it. They could find nothing wrong after about two weeks and gave it back. It wasn't fixed and went back. Finally Onkyo gave the service center authorization to replace the digital processor board. That seemed to fix everything for six months or so.

But now the problem is back. So I don't really know if it was the digital board or something else. I'll take it back and see if it can be fixed again.

I recommend something other than onkyo in your price range like denon or marantz. But if you really want an Onkyo you better save up and go for the integra line. Integra uses higher quality components and has an extra year on the warranty (something I think I'm gonna need).

Well, long story short, for the money I would have expected this receiver to be problem free... but its not. So I'm a little pissed I spent money on it.
