Strength:

Everything!!! Great Sound through all of musics or movies!!! Awesome Features!!! Everything...!!!

Weakness:

Nothing...!!! Not even a piece...

I CANNOT believe I finally got this receiver in my hand, especially with this price! The day I got this unit, I was listenning to the music, and wacthing movies all night long. This unit is unbelievable good. I always wonder how Onkyo could come up with this kind of receivers. I am so glad I got it with this price. Although if I had to buy it with the price of $999 or $1050, I still think that it is still worth to do. My dog almost die when I watch some exciting movies with this great reciever. Another good thing is that if you are watching movies or listenning to the musics very long time, there will be a very quiet fan running to help this receiver cool down. I bought more of hundreds of movies and cds since I have this receiver. I am planning to get the newer 797 or 898 in the future, too. Instead of making it a long write, I suggest you to go try to listen or have this receiver for yourself. This receiver is Awesome!!! I would not be hesitated to give this receiver all five stars. Those of who has written to this receiver badly or give it a 1 star, they don't know how to use this receiver or they do not have any ideas. Finally, the only thing you have to be aware of is that... you will have less hours of sleep when you have this receiver in your home or your bedroom.

Strength:

Flexibilty, Component Video Switching, Auto Sound Type swithing, Power on volume preset, and did I mention Flexibility?

Weakness:

Wish it could process two video signals at once.

Very, Very Happy with this receiver…WOW! I have never before had a receiver that I could re-program the audio and video source for every input. Video1, video2, tape1, tape2, DVD, etc, you name it. There is a setup for the video source and the audio source for each of them. You can reprogram them to anything you want. This flexibility is AWESOME! Component video switching…what can I say? …you got to have it these days for any high end system.
Auto Sound Switching: Dolby Pro Logic? Dolby Digital, PCM Stereo, Stereo, Dolby 5.1?...You don’t have to change it…the receiver figures it out and switches by itself! Very cool!
Power on volume preset: Ever wake up in the morning with a hangover? Turn on you stereo and feel like you just got hit by a truck cause the volume was more than you can handle? You can set the power on volume to anything you like…or need!
As for the sound, I’m and old man with moderate hearing loss. Sound great to me…but I’ll let others comment on that.
Great machine!

P.S. Anyone know of a TIVO unit that has digital audio INPUTS? Not just outputs?

Strength:

Bang for the buck!

Weakness:

Reliability?...It ran almost two hours before dying..so much for the malarky of Onkyo build quality.

This unit was purchased for a friend and was purchased only because of the stories of "hiss" problems with the Sony 555ES. The "build quality" rep of Onkyo did the trick and I bit. My purchases of receivers over the years have been for friends only.
Out of the box, the unit came up nicely with all functions seeming to function. In the calibration/setup mode, the IR receiver(in the box) died such that no remote functions other than volume control and mute work...not a livable situation. It is unlikely to be the transmitter..therefore it is the receiver...push button control at the box, works fine.
To return the unit to OneCall would take ~2 week turnaround,
not very acceptable...there is fortunately local repair.
(the unit performance is compared to my home system which could be described as semi-high end, separates only; and there the Onkyo performed quite well).
Thus far I'm NOT impressed!
If the repair station are hacks..I'll be back for more commentary.

everything, DTS,THX,component video inputs/outputs, digital in, 6.1

Weakness:

I miss having control over bass,treble,mid-range. Newer 797 is on my wish list now.

Awesome AV receiver, replaced my old (top off the line) Pioneer and am now in home theatre heaven. Had to go out and get another centre speaker for the back and now all I need is another one so that I can run 7.1. For home theatre, I am very happy. For just tunes, well you cann't beat a good seperates system, but for my limited time listening to music I can live with this Onkyo. Maybe changing the front speakers will improve the sound but that will have to be later.
My home theatre consists of:
Toshiba 56"Widescreen HDTV
Onkyo 787 receiver
Pioneer Progressive scan DVD
JVC S video VCR
Pioneer CD
Paradigm Monitor series Centre, back, and surrounds
Infinity Ref - fronts
Paradigm subwoofer
and for the kid in me..
PS2 with component video
Nintendo 64
and soon a X-Box.

Strength:

Home theatre wrecking machine, POWER, remote control

Weakness:

none so far and it's been almost a year

This machine kicks ass, all you people who discourage this product either got a broken one or do not have the right equipment to run it.
my setup:
onkyo787
floor standing pair of ar3's with side firing 12 in. woofers and built in sunfire amp.
ar2c 3-way center channel with 6.5in. down firing mid woofer.
ar15 rear surround speakers.
ar 15in. sub with mosfet amp

The best DSP mode for music is studio-mode and it shakes my house.
The home theatre experience is off the wall, the best i've ever heard.

Still waiting to pick up THX speaker package and bi-amp at a reasonable price so I can really feel the effects of the high and run 8 speakers instead of 6 (THX 2 rear center channels)

Weakness:

Better at HT than for music

I bought this unit because my 6 month old HK 7000 went out and Harman Kardon didn't want to repair it or replace it so they just refunded my money. I bought this unit because it seems to be very reliable according to the reviews on this site.

Word of warning: my first unit purchased at ReliableAudioVideo.com turned up with the incorrect remote and it was a used unit. They have since sent me a brand new one and apologized, but there is a risk buying on the web...

I was initially un-impressed with the Onkyo compared to the beauitiful sound that my HK 7000 put out. I still prefer the overall sound of the HK, but I have learned that you can't judge this receiver until you've done a fair amount of set-up. After going through the set-up modes and adjusting everything to my liking, I am very impressed with the features and flexibility of this unit. It may not match the HK is stereo music sound quality, but I believe it surpasses it in Home Theater.

I'll reserve 5 stars for overall until I've used it a while and it doesn't break (I'm wary now after the HK!!!)

PS: Can anyone post or e-mail me a to whether the fan in the Onkyo is temperature sensitive or not? Mine has not gone on yet even after many hours of use. However, I am using a Salamander stereo rach with perforated steel sides and front so there is plenty of ventilation...

Strength:

100w Full Bandwidth Clean Power to 6 Channels
Lack of Hokey DSP Modes
Top Notch Build Quality

Weakness:

Binding Posts are a bit bunched up
Massive size and weight make it tough to find an A/V Rack.

This is a great receiver even for the $1050.00 M.S.R.P but
at sub $800.00 it's an absolute steal. The power output is
great although 170-200 watts would be even sweeter. The way
the 787 outputs sound is clean and lacking any hokey DSP
fields like some (Yamaha) other receivers. Onkyo wanted a
no frills H/T A/V Receiver that set out to be the best in
it's class and without a doubt it is ONE of the best.

The build quality is remarkable, the weight is astounding
(40 LBS) and the finish is elite in design. The Processing
abounds with DPL,DTS,THX-EX,THX Cinema and more. I look
forward to many happy years with this receiver.

Build Quality. Remote. THX Certification.

Weakness:

None found so far.

I have had this receiver a little over a week now and it still amazes me. Best sounding home theater receiver I have had by far. I like the on screen menu and the flexibility the unit gives the user to set up the audio mode for each input. The remote control is great and easy to program. I have went from 4 remote controls down to the 1 Onkyo remote. My home theater never sounded better. Can't wait to use the additional surround channel for surround EX.
