Strength:

All the features under the sun. Great power. Supports all the formats. Affordable. THX Select.

Weakness:

Boring looking. Doesn''t really have a high tech look to impress your friends. :)

Well here''s the low down. My criteria for a receiver was it had to be $1000 or less, have 100w/ch+, and preferrably support DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete, and if possible support Dolby EX 6.1. After a lot of research it came down to the Marantz SR-7200 and the Denon AVR-3802. The Marantz kinda looked like it had all the features, but what it supports is up for debate. If you look at the reviews for this product some people list DTS discrete an advantage, and some Marantz owners say the lack of it is a disadvantage. I even emailed Marantz and the tech said it doesn''t support DTS 6.1 Discrete, nor Dolby 6.1. So with all the confusion surrounding Marantz, I decided the Denon was the way to go. I was about to make my purchase online and a friend told me about the Onkyo 797. I briefly looked at the Onyko offerings before, and didn''t see anything on 800.com that particularly impressed me. In 2 minutes, I was sold. There are no compromises, and has every possible feature, plus THX Select for under $1K. I''ve done a great deal of listening to this unit, and it powers my dual 8" Klipsch reference centers and fronts like it''s no big deal. I get crackling noises randomly on my front left channel. Only the front left. Believe me I''ve exhaustively tested to see if it''s something else. So I went to the Onkyo website, BIG WARNING... the Onkyo warranty is not valid at non authorized dealers. So you can''t just go to Yahoo shopping and get the cheapest one if you want the warranty. So I''m crossing my fingers hoping that LegacyAudioVideo.com comes through on their customer service.

Strength:

Overall quality. Alot of people rave about the quality. Meaning high quality parts which in return gives you high quality sound. As soon as I got it hooked up I could tell the difference right away. I mean the bass wasn''t boomy like my previous receivers but deeper sounding crisp clean bass. It made the action scenes so much more enjoyable to watch. Also have to mention the mids and highs that were really detailed sounding and crisp compared to previous receivers. I heard things I''ve never heard before, it was amazing! A few things that bothered me with my Sony was the hissing sound when nothing was on. It was pretty bad. Now with this Onkyo you can''t even tell it''s on. Second thing I notice is when I turned it up pretty high it stayed crisp and clean as if it was at a low volume. Other receivers the sound got all distorted. Third was the heat problem, the Sony got so hot I could cook an egg on it if I wanted to. With this receiver I watch 3 DVD''s and it was just warm. Fourth was options, I was kind in limited to how I could hookup my components up due to a limited number of inputs. Again the Onkyo had it all covered, just loaded with inputs. As far as appearance it''s not as

Weakness:

Perfomance wise nothing. Cosmetic though I wish the display didn''t look so outdated but that''s just being picky. Two like some I wish it had a flap to cover the buttons on the bottom but that''s just being picky again. Other than that it''s perfect.

I was a huge Sony fan so this review goes out to you other Sony owners looking to upgrade. I use to own a Sony STR-DE925 receiver and I own a Sony STR-DE945. I always hear that Sony receivers weren''t that good or stunk, but I personally thought they were great and just ignored it. Finally I got sick of all the negative reviews and feedback about Sony receivers and my home theater because of it. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I decided to upgrade. First things first I wanted to try a different brand and something more powerful with more channels so I asked around. Most of my replies told me to get Onkyo. I than started to read reviews on this site and other sites and started listening to peoples opinion and I decide upon this model. Let me tell you those guys were right, Onkyo receivers are AMAZING!!! As far as my opinion on Sony receivers I still like them but now I would have to say that its decent for the price but there is better and there is worse as well. It''s hard to review this because my Onkyo cost me $500 more so you would expect it to be better, it''s also a higher model than what my Sony was but I''ll give it a shot. I also owned a 2 Pioneer and a Kenwood receiver so I''m taking that into affect as well.

Strength:

Sound, access to features, remote, power.

Weakness:

The Cirrus/Crystal chip does have the bug in the routine for decoding the Dolby-EX on/off flag. Most affected DVDs (three or four so far) offer DTS anyway, which is slightly superior, and Dolby''s revised CODEC will not use the same routine, so the problem is already confined to a very limited number of Dolby Digital DVDs.

Having upgraded from the Sony DB-930 (the "near-ES" line, which was an admirable mid-level performer), I was struck immediately by the greater force and articulation coming from my five AR17 speakers hooked up to the 797. (My subwoofers were unaffected because they are driven independently: two custom-built ported cabinets, each housing one 12" Sony Mobile ES 4-Ohm driver, driven by an Onkyo 636.) The THX Select certification requires strict adherence to sound performance at high volumes for spaces 2000ft3 or less, and Onkyo has ably met those requirements with this receiver. Does the certification matter? For direct stereo, no. For anything else, yes. Once you engage the Crystal/Cirrus chip--which, admittedly, incorrectly decodes the DD-EX flag, causing the audio dropouts on the few DVDs shipped before Dolby rescinded the CODEC--and start using any of the theater modes, the constraints behind THX "sound," whether you''re using a THX mode or not, affect the quality of sound you hear. The chip itself is THX certified, so that''s where the benefits show up. And they do show up, even with music (e.g., in PLII-Music mode). Beethoven''s cello concertos (Ashkenazy/London) dance and throb with precision, Handel''s *Water Music* (Pinnock/Archiv) has all of its brassy bloom, Pat Metheny''s *Letter from Home* (Geffen) is perky and graceful, and even Styx''s *Grand Illusion* (A&M) gets back its old rock-operatic luster, positively sparkling on "Come Sail Away." I set my default initial volume to 40. By 70, the 797 fills the living room with bright but still reasonably smooth sound. The reference volume for THX calibration is 82--meaning that Onkyo has tested the quality of the sound for purity and accuracy to a point well beyond any comfortable listening volume. Acoustically, the 797 is, in a word, stable. What you hear is solid and balanced. Oh, and the remote is nearly perfect.

Strength:

Remote-awesome, Power and 7.1 for future.

Weakness:

None yet.

Price and yahoo rating were the attraction for an Onkyo Receiver. I called the 800 number, they said they had it in stock and gave me some spec''s and hookup advice, so I bought it. I had already played with one in home from Circuit City, then returned it to make sure this unit had everything I liked. I did not want to deal with a return at Reliable unless the thing was defective. The return policy is 14 days for defective units only, and they would only replace with same unit ordered. I could not reach a operator for (2) days to double check my order. Nervous as I was on the 3rd day, I talk to customer service after my credit card was billed to Uncle''s Stereo (Parent Company out of Yonkers, NY). I received the double boxed package within (4) days as promised (NY to Midwest). The inside Onkyo box had been retaped and the original mailing address sticker cut off. Alarms went off in my head. RETURN, REPAIRED, ETC... Opened the box and found the remote out of the sleeve, the receiver cord unwrapped and untied with no twisty, and no warranty cards. I examined the receiver and everything looked brand new (no scratches, dents or signs of screws removed). It has been about two weeks and the receiver is excellent. Everything works. I am very happy with it. DTS & ProLogic II sound great. The remote has macros and has learned (5) seperate components of different makes. It has made life simplier. The features are abundant and ready for future additions. I am still leary and probably would not buy from them again, since the company did not leave any return address or reciept for any problems that may happen to it.

Fantastic remote Solid Build Very configurable

Weakness:

Does not have On Screen Display through component switching

This receiver is awesome. I bought this to replace my Sony STR-DE845. I cannot beleive the difference !!! The 6 x 24/192Khz DACSs make a massive difference. The clarity is amazing. Not to mention how controlled my velodybe sub is. On my sony it was very boomy. The onkyo feeds it a beautiful signal that is crisp and accurate. Another thing is distortion is basically zero. While watching a DVD, press pause then turn the volume to max, you will hear nothing unless you put your ear right up next to the speakers. With my sony, anything over half way and the speakers would start hissing like a cobra from my seating position !! I can''t beleive people are bagging this receiver because of Dolby Digital audio dropouts. Dolby have admitted their flag was at fault and will not be used again. This reciever can decode all the formats known to man, and that 6.1 setup is so sweet. Now I want to sell my Sony dvd player to buy an Onkyo !

Strength:

Easy to use, some very nice features, great for use with the Surround Sound movies.

Weakness:

Tone controls are to minimal, and the unit doesn''t seem to have impact when listening to CD music.

No problems with the Unit works fine. I was considering the Dennon but due to disatisfaction I have with a Dennon CD changer just couldn''t buy the Dennon. I bought this to replace a older Sony ES ProLogic A/V reciever. I like the A/V qualities of the Onkyo very much; however, I like the sound from the Sony a little better, seems to have more punch and seems less colored. I was considering the Dennon 3802; however, I don''t like my Dennon CD changer very much, so I didn''t want to go Dennon again. Bottom line is that I don''t have any complaints; yet, if I were to buy again, I would still look around before buying this one again.

Don''t want to listen to music on friends'' system.

First of all I''m a student who makes $500 a month. I was going to buy TX-DS595, but the salesman told me about the payment plan so I went Buck Wild and purchased this model. This was a huge upgrade on my system considering I used have $300 JVC A/V receiver. When I played Amused to Death track 2 by Roger Waters, the drums sounded tighter and crisper. Beck''s guitar were amazing too. Let''s just say I''m too busy going through my CDs since I purchased this receiver.

Excellent receiver. Reviews are absolutely true. Only problem so far is that speakers emit a clicking noise when in surround mode. Did everything but clicking remains. Wonder if anyone else has that problem. Will be checking with Onkyo for possible explanation
