Strength:

Many people have already talked about the strengths of the system and I don''t have to add any. But the remote! You have got to love the remote! I can control my TV, DVD player and the Receiver with a single remote. Very convenient!

Weakness:

None

The best AV Receiver for the money! I had initially purchased the Onkyo 595 but took it back and got the 797 instead. Nothing wrong with the 595 (infact I think it is the best Receiver for under $500) but I wanted to 6.1 decoding, pre-outs, component video switching and didn''t want to have to dump my 595. I have been extremely satified with the system. Audio performance is crisp and clean. I have only a three speaker setup- Boston Acoustics VR965 front and VR910 center, but have been extremely satisfied with the performance so far. CD music in PLII now sounds better to me than Direct or Stereo. For HT, I haven''t been able to get the full experience as I don''t have the surrounds, yet. But it does sound very impressive even with a three speaker setup.

Strength:

great sound for music and movies build quality remote amount of inputs and outputs OSD

Weakness:

NONE!!!!

I want to start by asking people not to continue bashing this fine receiver for the Dolby Digital problems. The Denon 3802 and Marantz 7200 had the same problem. The software encoding is to blame, not the receivers! I played Pearl Harbor all the way through (God help me!) and had no dropouts at all. I''m very picky about my equipment, and can honestly say, after trying every reciever under the sun for the past year, that the Onkyo 797 beats them all. This unit is VERY well built, sounds superb for all types of music (especially SACD and DVD audio), and totally rocks on movie soundtracks!!! This receiver puts out 100watts by 6 channels, unlike the Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha units which put out about fifty watts per channel (if you''re lucky.) The 797 allows you to upsample digital signals. I''m hearing details in my CDs that I''ve been unable to hear up to this point. The remote is fully backlit, and also very hefty and well thought out. The tuner on this baby is very good, which is rare in today''s receivers. I can''t turn the volume up more than about 40% without going deaf. This unit drives my speakers like you wouldn''t believe. DTS and DD decoding are excellent with a very wide dynamic range, and absolutely zero backround noise. I''ve had no problems with the "woodpecker" noise that some people have reported, and I''ve been running it for over 100hrs straight. I''ve finally found a receiver that I woun''t be trading in in a year. It has plenty of inputs/outputs, and the OSD menu setups are excellent. DTS ES and THX EX are great, although there is much in the way of software to support these two formats yet. You will not find a better reciever for under $2000. I lamost went with the 898, but I didn''t really need the extra back channel, and both units sounded the same. Don''t hesitate, grab one of these babies while you can get ''em! Best receiver I''ve ever owned!!!

Weakness:

the only one I could think of is that there is no cover for the front panel.

I''ve researched for a new receiver to upgrade my old Yamaha RX-V992 for a while and made the right the decision to buy the Onkyo 797. I was either going for the Denon 3802 or this one, but the more features this one got for about the same price decided for me. Sound is excellent! it''s tight, clear, crispy at almost all volume level, driving my B&W 603s, LCR6, 601s and cc6. It hasn''t got as many reviews as the denon 3802, but believe me, it''ll get great reviews as the magazines forget about the old 787 which has been replaced with this one. The only one thing I''m not sure about is why the sound is a little weaker when the EX (6.1 speakers instead of 5.1) mode especially in THX-EX/DD-EX is used compare to just 5.1 channels. Is it how the channel separation works for THX/DD-EX???

AWESOME!!!!! AWESOME!!!!! AWESOME!!!!! There is no problem with this World Champion Receiver. It plays Pearl Harbor, Jurassic Park III, and Atlantis just fine for me in Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1,and THX-ES. All these people complaining need to do. Is set thier DVD player on Digital Bitstream output. This will let the receiver processor do its job. Try it! I am running a Toshiba SD-9200, with my Onkyo TX-DS797. This receiver brings a powerful crisp, clean, wide range of sound to your ears. It also has great component switching to run your HDTV and DVD into. I am in Home Theater Heaven. This is a great buy for anyone who wants Movie Theater quality sound in thier home.

Weakness:

Obsolete decoding software for Dolby

I can''t believe the reviews. I shelled out over a thousand hard earned dollars for a receiver "that can handle virtually any multichannel format out there-today and tomorrow...". Imagine my chagrin when it wouldn''t play Jurrasic Park III in Dolby 5.1!!!! Looked up the reviews here, and found out it also will not play Pearl Harbor nor Atlantis! I don''t know about you guys, but this is NOT a glitch. This is a thousand dollar piece of nonsense that has outdated software decoding. Maybe this is a scam by Onkyo to try to get you to buy their outrageously priced "upgradeable" TX DS989 by selling one that is already obsolete out of the box and not upgradeable.

Strength:

The sound in both hi-fi mode and as a home theater. Plenty of power. Lots of inputs for future connections. User friendly remote control.

Weakness:

None

This receiver is really, really sweet and surpasses my previous receivers easily. The sound in pure hi-fi mode is excellent, clean and well balanced overall. I have a pretty varied music taste and everything sounds good. My dad who is a true audiophile and country music lover has played some CD and DVD Audio of his on my equipment and has been really impressed. We also played some really sweet sounding (well produced) bluegrass stuff like Patty Loveless “Mountain Soul” and the sound was incredible, warm and detailed. As a home theater it works just as good!! The receiver is really well equipped, and delivers plenty of power. Setup is really easy with some nice GUI’s. I have had no problems at all with Universal discs like some other people here (Jurassic Park III, Fast and the Furious). However some friends of mine have encountered problems with the discs mentioned and the receivers they have includes: Marantz SR7200, Denon AVC-A1 and Pioneer VSX-909RDS-G. Also it isn’t an Onkyo specific problem, it is a mastering problem. Overall I am positively surprised over the performance of this receiver. It delivers the goods you can expect and even more. It hasn’t let me down yet and I have used it frequently.

Weakness:

Wish it had a flip down front panel, but nothing that is comparable does so it''s no big deal.

This is a great receiver for HT AND music. There are lots of digital inputs which is good because I have 5 digital sources so I still have two extra for expansion and all the video inputs are very convinient. I have none of the dropout problems, I always listen in DTS mode when possible. This is an exellent product. The DAC''s are great and DTSES and THX Surround EX is fantastic. The remote is also an added plus I was not expecting.

I just can''t beleive the posts I am reading here. Many of you are downgrading the review score of a very nice receiver because of a simpke glitch. If you would take the time to visit almost any audio bulletin board or even the onkyo website (www.onkyousa.com), you would understand that the dropout problem is affecting more brands than just Onkyo. Here is the press release from Onkyo, (http://www.onkyousa.com/article_top.cfm?id=21), and although it doesn''t specifically mention Atlantis, it is also included. This is a Dolby Labs mastering problem. That out of the way. I have been very happy with my Onkyo 797. It is fairly easy to set up and sounds great. I had a Nakamichi AV400 which has served me well, but I was in need of a good home theater receiver with Dolby Digital and 6.1. this is it. I have only had the 797 for a little while so I will report back with more details in the future.
