ONKYO TXDS939THX has quality control problem. The first one I got cut the sound off after I played it with CD for 20 minutes. Astonishingly, second one I got had the same problem. The third one was fine finally. |

Specifications and price tag mean nothing! This product has no equal without going to discretes. Don't worry about DTS or 6.1 decoding, this unit will blow you away with just AC-3. At ANY volume (including whisper quite) the sound is crystal clear with dynamics I can't begin to describe. I have owned my Onkyo 939 for 2 years and have enjoyed every minute of it.It is the best home theater money can buy. Many people are hesitant to buy this receiver because it lacks DTS processing. Please don't let this alter your decision. DTS is not taking off like AC3 with the public or manufacturers and never will. Yes DTS is a great format but AC3 Dolby Digital is the standard for DSS and the up and coming HDTV transmission. I have spoken with a company that makes after market processors and they said that they will make a DTS processor that is backwards compatible for any receiver if DTS becomes popular. Back to the receiver... Appearance, performance, and versatility are superior. The DSP modes are crisp and well balanced provided that you have the right mode with the proper mover or event. THX is awesome!!! In a nut shell, THX makes any movie sound close...very close to dolby digital. At least with laser discs. It seperates the rear surrounds into two channels instead of one. This is excellent if you're listening to a non AC3 movie. The power handling is almost too much. I can't turn the dial more than half way without shattering the windows or getting the wife in an uproar. The test mike is nice but your speakers must be positioned perfectly. I prefer setting up the speakers manually. The only negative is the tuner. You can't scan your stations and the reception seems week. Also, there is a delay when switching DSP modes which makes it difficult to compare to each other. Over all, it's a best buy. I still keep my eye out for new receivers but there has yet to be a valid competitor. My advice, go buy one today. If you ever have any questions about this receiver or anything pertaining to home theater, email me anytime. Also, look for my future review on the Mirage 595i's and the Mirage OM-10's which will be posted in about 90 days. I haven't received them yet but they're enroute and I'll need time to give them a thorough test for both music and home theater. "Life is good" |
