Power, build quality, aesthetics

No DTS....But I really don't miss it.

This is a superbly crafted machine! The aluminum faceplate is a striking vision of quality. At a weight of approximately 53lbs. it is definately a "heavyweight" in it's class. I love the drop down control panel! It is very well thought out in it's design. The unit reproduces music very accurately with a warm, enveloping sound. I am running Klipsch KLF20's and they never sounded better! I can't imagine a better receiver on the market in the price range. If you have the means to pick one up....DO IT!!! You will love this machine. Only drawback is no DTS, but I really don't see that as a major consideration with regard to the amount of DTS material on the market. The only DTS dvd that is in my collection ( and probably yours) is The Eagles Hell Freezes Over, and it sounds brilliant without the DTS. The 939 is on the net brand new for around $2,200, but you can pick one up used for around $900-$1100. My system consists of:

Klipsch KLF C7 center
Klipsch RB 5's surround
Klipsch KSW 12 sub
Onkyo 600 dvd/cd

I have been using this receiver for almost 1 year now, I used to have separate components before. In my judgement, I will describe it as follows:SOUND: Overall very good.
FLEXIBILITY: Excellent, no other has as many inputs.
DSP: Poor, can not tell difference from 1 mode to another, many sound the same, except for Dolby Digital, that's good.
TUNER: Overall, in a scale 1-10 I give it a 4.
FINISH/DESIGN: Very Beautiful and easy to use.
Would I buy it again: Probably not, separates still much better. I changed because of space limitations.
OVERALL QUALITY: "B-"

Indeed a good product. Competes with many separates.
Does give a lot of detail, even at very low volumes (I don't need the large power, I need emotion).
It's an ideal step for people who want to buy many things in one product, and growing on to a higher level. You can eliminate every element of the product step by step. The dolby digital decoding is fabulous, the dolby surround is not spectacular (perhaps caus' we compare against dolby digital). DTS is not present, but pre-amplification is possible.
The remote is indeed a bit unhandy, but I got the Sony programmable remote control. Just a must-have.

I have had this receiver for over a year and a half and pretty much enjoy every minute of it. I don't have much complaints only the fact that's listed on my weaknesses list. Crystal clear sound and performance.

Why are all reveiws missing for this unit but it should have 7?

I have this toy for around 1 year. My toys came and gone, very interesting that I never think about to let go this 939. There are so many features built in the 939 that other products with the same price range do not have. Superb preamp and also fine in amp. I saw someone is selling used for $1300-$1500. I will suggest one who, is looking for an excellent receiver, should consider this, though it does not have DTS and it is 20bit DAC (not 24bit/96Hz DAC). I believe DTS can be upgraded trough MSB!! (not sure)5 stars for it build quality

I recently added the onkyo txds939thx receiver as the headpiece on my system.not only does this receiver have all the features of an ultra high end THX &
Dolby digital preamp but the amplifier section seems to compare to that of high
end separetes as well. For those of you that might be comparing the Denon avr5600
to it, don't bother, it is not even in the same league. The 939 comes with a
spl microphone that allows the receiver to automatically adjust the speaker
levels and distances. This receiver has 7 (thats right 7) video inputs all
with S-Video as well as 2 digital fiberoptic inputs, on coax and one RF. It
also has the ability to ad a preamp (or external processor) via main inputs
for all channels. The on screen guides allow you to adjust all parameters
to taste (size, shape of room, reverb levels etc.) as well as giving you
presets for each mode. At 120watts x 5 this receiver seems to never run out
of power. A few other noteworthy features include a complete 'B' system,
meaning that you can wire a full surround system in another room and simply
switch to 'B' and listen to full surround in the other room. (you may want
to purchase multiroom remote repeater) This receiver also has multisource
outputs for picture and sound allowing you to listen & view other sources
in other rooms at different volumes with the use of an external amp.
After auditioning this receiver and tinkering with it's endless features,
you will conclude as I did that no other receiver equals it. As the reviewer
in Stereo Review said, it's only true competition comes from high end seperates.

Hello ladies and gentlemen! I am realy thrilled to have the opportunity to give my two cents about this product especially rememberring how much i was craving for it long before i could buy it.In fact by the time i got it i knew so much about it`s back panel ins and out conections that when i finally brought "THE MOTHER OF ALL RECIVERS" home i could make all my connections with my eyes closed just from studying the photo and specs pamplet. I called 939 "THE MOTHER OF ALL RECIVERS" for a good reason it was the technological breakthrough towards closing the gap between recivers and separates the true pioneer that led to what today,s new recivers [not all] do for audio video enthuziasts presently like Denons,Yamahas and others. I also feel some of your pains for no DTS or more digital inputs but remember the year when 939 first came out the best digital audio was from laser discs and people knew little or nothing about DVDs. Speaking of DTS if any of you have any suggestions on how to get that DTS card installed i would appreciate your email at:Boici1@earthlink.net. Bottom line is that on music there is competition but on movies the 939 leaves them all in the dust except "THE NEW BEAST" you guessed right "989" my next purchase.[sorry Dennon] Happy auditioning and please let your ears be the ultimate judge not the competition gimmicky specs who show a lot of WATTS BUT GOT NO GUTS.
