Strength:
Supports all current formats Easy to set up More that enough power Excellent value
Weakness:
Cursor button on remote can be difficult I am very impressed with this receiver so far. The on-screen menus make setup and calibration a breeze. I made the jump from Dolby Pro-Logic to 7.1, so this is a whole new world of listening pleasure for me. I've never spent so much time watching movies ! My previous receiver was an Onkyo, so I know that reliabilty will not be an issue. I would highly reccomend this receiver ! Casual Listener
Strength:
handles every format up to date, plenty of inputs, powerful, Pure Audio mode for great listening.
Weakness:
none relying on the reviews I've read here and C/Net giving it the hightest review ever for any receiver, I decided to purchase the 800. Relying on a friend to help out with the setup, it took all of 45 minutes to finish. I have my dvd player hooked up with optical wire and use the monitor out to the tv. I started saving all my remotes because this one learns them all. On screen setup was a breeze, from speaker distance to speaker loudness. THX mode is awesome, went right to the pod races on Star Wars. This unit does it all: THX, DD EX, DTS-ES Discrete, Matrix 6.1, Pro Logic , DTS 96/24. 8 pre outs, 7.1 multi channel inputs for DVD-audio and SACD. Running Paradigms all around with DT pro 200 sub. I highly recommend this unit Similar Products Used: none, first Onkyo product, |

Strength:
- good power & detail sound
Weakness:
none I used to be with the Yamaha RXV 2300, and when I found Onkyo TX SR 800 I felt it was completely good for movie and music. We may say the Yamaha was good enough, but the Onkyo has the detail output that makes me more comfortable to keep it with me. Strength:
Sound quality and features for the price. the amount of connections available cant be beat either
Weakness:
the Middle browse button does suck i will say that a lot of times i use it to scroll on my dvd menu and i will hit enter by mistake. there is no tape monitor loop for EQ's and you can only run 2 speakers in stereo mode. this receiver is great! it took a while to get all the settings just right but once thats done its well worth the effort i have to say that DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 is so clean sounding on movies (i only have 3 movies with DTS-ES 6.1 and i wish more dvds came with this format Similar Products Used: Pioneer VSX -9300 AV Receiver ( I still have this the sound is awesum for a 15 yr old receiver i plan on adding 2 more back speakers for 4 speaker stereo and i will use the amp in the receiver for tha |

powerful clear sound. Video passed through this unit comes out as if it were hooked up to your TV directly..
Weakness:
Browse button on remote is touchy and difficult to use. Truly a fine piece of work. Thats the only way I can describe this Receiver. Excellent sound, great features, No need to spend the extra money on Integra.. Similar Products Used: Technics, Sony, |

Strength:
Sound, power, THX cert, ease of use
Weakness:
Cursor on remote is hard to use. I really like this receiver, It does everything I want, great for both 5.1 H/T and Hi-res audio. Variable crossover points are nice as well. Set-up menu is easy to use and straight forward. Sound is clean and true to the source with good power 100x7. Plays(decodes) basically every sound format out at this time. Highly recommend it! Strength:
* clean simple lay-out * processing ability ( multi format unit) * easy to use remote * cross-over adjustable from 40 to 100 in 20HZ increments *
Weakness:
My other equipment: * Monitor Audio Silver 8i for L/R * Monitor Audio Silver 10i for center * Monster Cable Z2 bi-wire for all front speakers * No name surround speakers ( future upgrade) * Sony DVP-9000es DVD/CD/SACD player * Parasound HCA-1205a 5 x 140 channel amp * Monster Power HTS-2600 Power Center * Monster interconnects,Stealth Fineline MKII digital cable from DVD player My review will echoe some of the same thoughts in the other reviews. This unit processes signals very cleanly. I am using the unit as a pre-amplifier. I have a Parasound HCA-1205a to power 5 channels. I will eventually add two more speakers to get me to 7.1. Installation was a breeze and took me all of 20-30 minutes to get everything up an running. I can finally take advantage of my Sony DVP-9000es DVD/CD/SACD player. The extra processing afforded by the Onkyo certainly make the sound very sweet. Overall, I am very pleased with the unit thus far and I am sure I can find additional tweeks. I have only experimented with the adjustment for a week or so. |

Strength:
Great sound, easy setup, good remote.
Weakness:
None I love this unit. I had an old sony and tried out the Onkyo sr600 first and really enjoyed it but wanted some extra wattage and the 7.1 The SR 800 wasn't out yet so auditioned the Denon 3802. The Denon was great but the remote was complicated. I finally tried out the SR 800 and I can say the Denon 3802 and the Onkyo 800 are about the same in sound quality and features but the Onkyo was even $100 cheaper. I have absolutely no complaints. Strength:
~ Ease of hook up for speakers and such. ~ Remote is fairly easy to undertand.
Weakness:
~ Weight (42.5 lbs.) ~ Amount of heat generated from top of unit. I never knew what I was missing until I hooked this receiver up to my high dollar Sony DVD player. All I can say is wow!! I'm hearing sounds in movies that I never knew existed. This system has brought my Bose speakers to life. Very clear sound. This unit has also drastically improved the sound coming from my TV.
