Bwas!

Weakness:

Surround Sound blows when not in DTS mode. Remote - backwards? (hand movements)

Overall this receiver has awesome sound quality for the price. The value increases when the number of inputs/outputs are considered. Tons of features. Multiple DSP modes custom listening. BBZ says buy it Bwas!

Worst Remote ever

A excelent value for the money. I'm using this as a second HT in my bedroom. Its a large room (20x32') but as a bedroom I don't listen that load. A sub is a must with this receiver. Sometimes it has a problem locking on a DD signal from satalite but noy often were its a problem. Sound quality is good, not great. Remote is worst I ever used.

Weakness:

terrible remote,
can not produce rated power at 5.1 channel mode

The first thing that disappointed me in this product was the size of the remote.
For audio listening at 2 channel mode this receiver is quite satisfactory but if you need more bass, I recommend connecting a sub.
For home theater use in multi-channel mode - I have to crank up the volume to 3/4 to get satisfactory volume level to drive my Infinity HTS10 speakers.

For an entry level system on a tight budget, I would recommend this receiver but you get what you pay for.

few and far between

Weakness:

just about everything

This is an aweful receiver. There are only two listening modes worth anything (Jazz, with the delay turned all the way down, and Theater 2) all the rest have way too much echo. The bass is almost non existant and the speaker that came with the Home Theater Package stink. It's hard to believe Pioneer let this product out the door. Did they even listen to it? All the modes but the two mention sound like they're in caves. Terrible, terrible. And it's not just the speakers, I just bought some Sony 815's and while waiting for my new receiver I hooked them up to the receiver and they didn't sound any better than the cheap speakers. You get what you pay for. Invest and save time and headaches latter down the line.

Strength:

Great value for price, DD & DTS

Weakness:

None besides small remote

I was looking for a receiver in sub $300 range and after reading the reviews on this site, I got this unit for $200 +tax at local Sears. This unit has completely lived to my expectations. There enough inputs (digital and coaxial) for most beginning HT enthusiasts. It would have been great if pioneer had included a digital input as well. Besides being easy to set up it has performed well beyond my expectation for the last 10 months.
The only drawback that I have noticed with this unit is a lack of bass. I have decent speakers that go down to 40 Hz and the unit does not have the oomph that some other reviewers have also pointed out. Using the bass boost button only makes the mid range louder but does not provide any additional bass. The size of the remote is not an issue for me as I have a universal remote.
Overall I would reccomend this unit to any one on a budget. This unit has room to expand as it has 5.1 channel input which could be used with DVD-AUDIO and also provides pre-outs for each of the channels which for me personally is a very usefull feature. Great bang for the buck

Strength:

Clear sound, was good value when I bought it. 100w per channel. Sounds great with DTS and DD.

Weakness:

Remote badly designed, not back-lit. FM signal is very weak. No longer a good value at $200. Casing is crude and ugly.

I bought this system last November at Costco, it was an awesome, unbeatable value at that time. I didn't need s-video input, so I saved myself $40 and went with D409 instead of D509. Found out afterwards that D509 comes with a better remote. Have been very happy with the sound from it, even when watching regular TV. Couldn't step out of the house for days bc I was glued to my system. A few months after I bought this model, the D509 model was on sale at Costco for $199, the price I bought the D409 for.

If I were to buy a receiver now, though, I would go for a Yamaha receiver. Just ordered the Yamaha HTR-5460 for my bro for $330 online, with all the connections you can think of, including component video. If you don't care about component video, you can get cheaper HTR-5440 / HTR-5450, or even grab last year's model on clearance, HTR-5250 / HTR-5260, all in the $200's range online. Let's face it, Pioneer did a great job with these receivers, but Yamaha is still head and shoulders above Pioneer when it comes to making quality receivers. They make receivers w/ quality level of HK, Onkyo, and Denon, with prices similar to that of Pioneer and the like.

One other advice - look for cheap online prices on shopping.yahoo.com and dealtime.com. You can find some unbelievable deals online. The Yamaha HTR-5460 receiver (brand new) my brother got for $330 online is sold for $500 at Circuit City.

I finally got a copy of the manual from someone who saw my posting on this site (thank you)

"I have had this receiver for just about a month now, and have been enjoying it a lot. I purchased it at Best Buy as an open box item, and the rear foot had broken off of it, so I got an espeically good deal. When I got it home the foot went right on, and setup was very easy. I didn't have a manual to work with, so tuner controlls took a little playing. I still havent figured out how to program the remote to controll my VCR and DVD player though, as I said, I have no manual. Over all it seem to be very nice, but if anyone can help me out with directions for programing the remote, or can get me a digital copy of the manual, I would appriciate it very much. Thank you. "

Amp is bleeping cheap, cheap, cheap!

Listen, I cannot believe that this receiver actually has a (up to this point) better than 4 stars average rating. One thing to point out her really quick - and I have heard this from more than one owner - do not expect for this unit to last much beyond the 1 year warranty, cause if it happens to last beyond a year, start shopping for a new receiver. Unless of course you have some holy power at your command. If you happen to be stupid enough to buy this receiver, don't expect for this unit to sustain anything approaching loud volume from a coaxial or optical digital connection (i.e. DVD, CD player with optical output) This thing would cut itself off (protection mode) whenever I had the unit turned up. Blegh!! Avoid Sony audio receivers too!
