Strength:

The unit looks good and the possibilities are great

Weakness:

Echo when playing sound from the television

I listened to this unit at my kid brother's. We bot have five infinity ouvertures hooked up for ultimate surround pleasure. After switching from the Yamaha that always pleased me I agree that he sound is better both in surround as in normal stereo. The only big drawback (except from the remote) is that if i play the sound of the television over the Sony there is a delay in sound. This results in a very disturbing echo. The only way the go is to turn down the volume on the televsion and only listen to the sony. For me this is not a big problem but I have tried to expalin to my girlfriend what to so many times now I almost want to switch back to the Yamaha to get some peace while watching television.

I recently replaced my aging Sony STR-D865 unit with this one. What a difference, I've been going through all my old CDs, CD-Rs, and videos just to compare the two units. There is NO comparison however. The unit is brilliant in DD 5.1 playback. This unit & a great DVD player like the Sony DVP-7700 represent a fantastic value. I highly recomend the STR-DB930 to anyone looking for a fantastic receiver with all the current options & connections for a reasonable price.

I just picked this amp up as a replacement to a lowerer end sony. Deep rich sound. Wonderful power. I do notice hiss when I turn the volume way up on a paused cd, dvd etc, but I'm pretty sure its my cabling.
Fantastic amp for the money, It has most of the components of the es series, almost all of the features and I/O's only found on higher priced amps.

A definite choice for mid price range home theater. I'm running Mirage FX6's and a sony550d dvd. I was told by the sales rep only Sony ES dealers can carry this series, so look hard for this amp, is not available everywhere. It is however, worth the search

Tweeter: $599

Just got the European version of this a couple of weeks ago, to rplace my aging Kenwood KRV-6060 pro-logic receiver and accompany my Toshiba SD-3109 DVD player.I takes a while setting up and this is not for the fainthearted. However, I persevered until I got the sound exactly how I like it. This thing is BRILLIANT!!! If you had any doubts at all about buying one, don't have. Dolby Digital sparkles from all speakers, even though I only have a set of Jamo rear surrounds rated at 25w and no sub.
The other day, I came home from work and the kids were watching the King and I animated DVD (again!) and I was completely bowled over by the sound. My only gripe is that it doesn't have a dedicated LD AC-3 input and so a seperate demodulator is required. I love it, and even my wife has declared it a winner.

10 stars!

For the person who wanted to know where to get this receiver for a decent price: Try "buyingedge.com". You fill out an online form telling them what brand and model you're looking for, and they come back with quotes from different retailers. I got mine for $414 delivered from Sound City in New Jersey through "buying edge".

Great price for an awesome receiver. The thing is great. The only thing I don't like is the lack of a tape monitor.

I purchased this unit to replace a year-old Sony STR-DE715. The primary purpose of the purchase was to achieve digital inputs for my new Sony 550 DVD player and for S-Video switching. I love the Eagles DTS version of their disc. I also had read numerous reviews about this piece of gear in this and other columns.
My 'out of the box' experience was somewhat confusing as this unit, along with most audio gear, comes with rather poor instruction. I had no problems with system connections, but the the unit and remote setup instructions could be improved.

Now, after 2 days of FM, DVD, CD, and DSS I really cannot believe the improvement in sound and sound management over my not-to-old 715. This is a great receiver for about $500.00 shipped (Onecall). I'm on the fence concerning the remote. It's flashy but I's like to see a better universal remote for all of my Sony products. This should not be after-market either.

Hi,
I had a 930 for a month and I and all of my friend were impressed, really. The 930 got all you need. Sounds uncredible. It was connected to a Sony 7700 DVD player. So, trere is a noise comming out from all the speakers when you push pause button on the DVD player, while playing something in DD or DTS. The level is arround 4. When you turn on the DSP modes, things are getting even more noisy. The situation is the same with regular CD, connected to a Digital in. Please, check and I'll need your opinion.

Resume: Best sound for the money.

Was going to buy a Sony str-da555es, but recently saw all of your raves about the str-db930.What are the technical differences between the two? What about the sound from each? I would love to save a few bucks if it's as good as the 555es.
Thanks,
Chris
