Strength:
The abilty to select a number of differenct sound options, the full Sony line, Optical for CD, DSS, DVD, Multichannel for DVD SACD sound. The 6.1 for the price is outstanding. Try Gladiator for movies or Eric Clapton / B.B King DVD-Audio for music played through Sony DVP-NS755V (Another great value)
Weakness:
The only problem so far is the lack of a Record Out function, not being able to record a show and watch another with the Receiver operating takes me back quite a few years. If it is available, I have not found how to do it with the limited manual. This receiver has a great number of options and the abilty to easily control my list environment, TV, DVD, 300 disk CD, DSS, VCR. The set up was very easy and pain-free. Strength:
Easy to install, Sound set-up quite compelling, It guides you to reach full compliance. try it with Matrix, Phantome Menace and Pearl Harbor! It will stunt you out.
Weakness:
There most be more qualities hiden with it. The manual book is quite short on information. However, try it out and play with it! For more than a month, I went through a lot of receivers top buy. This one has all the qualities needed to reach ful satisfaction and renderveous performance. The system is quite a machine. Similar Products Used: Devon, Marantz, Yamaha and Technics |

Sound is great, especially in 6.1 Surround sound. Sound fields do a lot for CD sound....
Weakness:
Remote takes a few days to learn. Sony seems to think that when they make a multi-functional remote, that it should only perform 85% of the tasks of the additional products it is controlling (especially other Sony components). I'm not sure if S-Link is functioning correctly with the exception that whenever I switch to the TV the audio switches as well. This in not true for DVD or VCR, which have to have their audio switched manually. Just a slight inconvenience though...... It's a strong unit when compared with all other receivers under a grand. Some of the soundfields and bells and whistles lose their novelty after the first couple of times you use them. Personally, I really don't use any of the soundfields except for Night Theatre and Cinema B. The sound is really good for the price. I had a buddy who swears by Denon components and Klipsch speakers come over and we watched the Matrix, Saving Private Ryan and Episode I and he was amazed at the sound and was re-evalutating what he'd paid for his..... great sound for the price. it''s astheticaly pleasing (it looks nice)
Weakness:
without the right speakers it just dont sound right! I perchased this product for 2 resons. 1. it looks so kool! 2.i needed to upgrade my old sherwood RD6106RDS (by the way im frum the uk) I am quite suprised with the £375 mid-range reciever. i first saw it in CURRYS for around £600.I thought that wasn''t to bad.But then i went down nottingham to RICHER SOUNDS (The largest retailer in the UK acording to the guiness book of records)and they had it for £380 so i grabed the chance and brought it.I coildn''t wait to get it home. so i didn''t i asked for a demo.the sound though the mission M73''s was good, but my ELTAX CHROMA speaker package will do it justice.and it did. overall i think it''s an exelent mid-range reciver. Strength:
6.1 decode and plenty of inputs.
Weakness:
receiver turns on automatically when you press any of the a/v buttons on the remote. If you just want to watch tv without turning on the receiver for example the receiver turns on as soon as you hit the tv/sat button on the remote. Can be a pain if you want to use the remote to controll cable boxes ect. and dont want to have the receiver turned on. I have been using this receiver for a little over a month now. I searched long and hard and decided that for the price this was the best receiver for the money. Similar Products Used: none |

6.1 surround sound is all I gotta say
Weakness:
Not as aesthectically pleasing as the previous model year, especially liked the motorized volume knob which is gone... I think this is the most advanced home receiver you can get without spending over $1000.00. If you want surround 6.1 sound, here it is. Craziness from all around you is the best way to describe the sound effects whiole watching dvds. Similar Products Used: sony str-de835 |

Actually this is a great home theather reciever
Weakness:
none now Sorry but I put in the wrong price paid in the above review. I paid $475.00. To solve the 2nd room speaker problem I purchased two 30 foot long audio cables and connectors from radio shack. I connected one end to the second room out jacks on the Sony reciever and ran it to the second room in the crawl space under the floor and connected the other end to an old reciever. Now I can fully utilize the home theater in the first room. |

Strength:
6.1 Decoding, Good but confusing universal remote, two sets of multi-channel inputs and dual-sub output.
Weakness:
Equalizer has no mid-range adjustment on surround and surround back speakers. After owning a Sony STR-DE845, and having only a few issues, I knew this receiver would be great. I am impressed by the 6.1 decoding of this receiver, considering there are no logos for DTS-ES or THX SURROUND EX on the front panel :). Not that I care about that, because I know that those logos are the reasons companies such as Denon and Marantz charge so damn much. In my opinion, this is the best receiver that Best Buy carries. The more expensive Yamaha model(s) which technically have better distortion ratings and more jacks, are way to confusing. And also, the fact that the three top-end sony models have kick-ass equalizers built-in, makes them better than any Yamaha receiver. One thing I'm a little sad about, is that Sony has yet to put surround sound pre-outs on any of their regular receivers. Kinda wierd, considering the receiver is 600 retail. Ah well, I probably would not use them anyway. Also, why oh why did Sony nix the mid-range equalizer adjustment on the surround and surround back? Oh and one more thing........Sony, I would appreciate it if you put in a dedicated optical jack for the CD function on your receivers. I've had to use the damn TV/SAT input for both the STR-DE845, and my new 1075. I know you want to push SACD, but come on! DVD-Audio is going to kill it anyway. Strength:
great sound especially in sacd playback, easy to use once familiar with controls, on screen display.
Weakness:
manual needs to go into a bit more depth on some subjects, can't use remote to move cursor on movie options screen, can't use remote to control other pieces w/o recvr. turning on automatically (may be a setting). purchased this unit in oct.,01 and so far it is every thing that i need. purchased the new cd/sacd/dvd player from sony as well. the two together are a great match. in hopes that it may help someone else right away, when u set up the sacd multichannel 1 assign it to direct mode. in other words when u play dvd use the optical output on dvd, when u play sacd program the recvr. so that when u select cd/sacd it automatically goes to mulitchannel diret mode. it took me a little while to figure that out.i greatly recommend this recvr. to anyone just starting out right up to the mid/upper level guy. it has 6.1 discrete option and a lot of different sound fields if that is what u like but it seems that "virtual multi-rear or multi-dimension" are the ones that seem to make the sound less localized during movies.Try it, I don't think u will be dissapointed...
