The Sony STR-DE725 is a great reciever for the price. I got mine open box for $212, and have been very pleased with it. It's a pity that Sony has discontinued it. The only problem with it is that neither of the surround sound modes support vocals on music very well. But, all in all it is a very good reciever. I give it a 5 star rating. |

Strength:
Good price for what you get
Weakness:
None that I see This has been a great receiver for me, I've used it mainly for my cd player, computer, and tv/vcr. It was a great value and the dolby digital option is there for when i get a DVD player. Puts out great sound, I'm definately pleased. |

Strength:
Biggest bang for your buck. Clear highs and midrange and decently clear bass. 3 year manufacturers waranty from Sony.
Weakness:
Gets too warm I think and bass isn't accurate on more contemporary music. I had this receiver for about 3 months and put it to some normal use, classical and rock music, dolby digital, and gaming and this receiver rocked! Of course it isn't a Denon or any high end receiver but for a college dorm and for someone on an extreme budget, this receiver kicks butt! Picked it up open box for 220. |

Strength:
Good Amp , Plenty of Power. Easy to set up.
Weakness:
Remote problem solved with a cinema 7 universal. I just wanted to counteract the guy from San Jose who posted twice. Electronic equipment breaks on occasion and he is lucky it fried quickly. This is my second Sony and the first lasted 9 years and is still playing somewhere. Similar Products Used: Sony DVD dvp300 .Paradigm 5se speakers. |

The value vs price for the Receiver is wonderful... The DSP, Prologic, and Digital all sounds very good. Upgrading from a STR-DE425, I notice that the back speakers are much more clear now, and base is mixed into the center and front speakers. This, however, is the part that bugs me a bit... the mix of base into the center and front speakers (mine are very small) provides some distorsions and covers up the beat from the sub. The subwoofer does not seem to be as loud as it was when hooked up with the 425. |

pick one As you can see from my previous post I am not happy with the Sony Corp. If you are looking to buy Sony you better hope it never breaks. They have had my receiver for a month now and it still isn't fixed. In fact they tell me atleast another month before I see it. So let's get this straight, I owned the equipment for 3 months. Sony will have it for two months. You be the judge. |

I purchased the sony str-de 725 in southern Florida about two months ago. I had planned on updating my equipment to dolby digital compatable. I previously owned the sony str-de 965 and had six years of great service from it. I had not planned on buying my new receiver when I went to Florida but, I could not beat the price. I brought the 725 at Best Buy for $249 before tax. This price included a four year service plan for the receiver. I did not get a chance to give the receiver a good test in Florida because I did not have my best any speakers there. I have given the receiver a good thumping in the last two weeks since I have been back in Virginia. This receiver has withstood every test that I have put it through. There are several features on this receiver that are worthy of being mentioned. I like the different variety of DSP soundfield modes that the receiver has. Night Theater mode allows you to watch a move late at night with low volume and still allows you to be able to here the surround sound through all speakers clearly. The receiver also allows to dim the display panel, which is useful when you want to listen to music late at night and do not want to have the front panel glowing brightly. This receiver also allows you to select speaker placement. The speaker placement, along with the ability to set the center and surround speaker levels, and the fact that there is equal power to all channels makes way for a great listening environment. The only thing about the Sony str-de 725 that I did not like is the remote control. If you have the extra money, I would suggest buying the remote control that comes with the str-de 825 and str-de 925 direct from Sony. The price for the remote is around $140 to $150. I sold the remote that came with the str-de 725 because it is universal. I would recommend the Sony str-de 725 to anyone that wanted a dolby digital receiver and wanted to spend less that $400. Montgomery Wards have deem on sale for $299(in southeastern Virginia anyway). If you are located anywhere near a Brandsmart or Best Buy, those are the places to go for a great deal on all home theater equipment. |
